1 SCHOOL VISION AND MISSION

Characteristics of education provided by schools of the Sisters Announcers of the Lord

Our convictions An educator has to be filled with love and devotion as education is an art which touches hearts. Only people who know how to gain access to hearts will master the art.

All human beings have thoughts rooted in religion; they believe in a Creator. Human hearts are inclined to truth, charity and the aesthetics which originate from the Creator. Education is to discover and develop Man’s potentiality for these virtues to the utmost.

It is our firm belief that even the most deviant young people may repent and become charitable.

Application of our convictions “Prevention is better than cure.” We follow the model of preventive education founded by the great educator Don Bosco. This model works from three principles: rationality, religion, and love.

1. Rationality – We convince students by appealing to reasons. Our rules and measures must be reasonable and easily understood by students. We regularly use encouragement and reminders to persuade students to be charitable and diligent in their studies.

2. Religion – We develop students in the spirit of religion. We educate youths to search for truth, charity and the aesthetics through the values of the Christian Gospel.

3. Love – We strike students’ hearts with sincere love for them. Love forms the nucleus of our education ideal. We do not just use words but action to prove our love.

The motto of the School is “Purity and Charity”. Following the teaching of Jesus Christ, with our teachers’ professionalism and our staff’s sense of devotion, we pledge to develop our students’ potential to the fullest and enable them to achieve success in university, career and life and have a positive influence on others.

School Mission

We follow the teachings of Jesus Christ and regard Our Lady as our model. Our mission is to help our students acquire the Christian values with special emphasis on "Purity and Charity". Through the provision of a caring and loving environment and building up of a trustful and intimate relationship with parents and students, we aim to enable students to become mature, happy and positive people. By equipping students with knowledge and skills, we hope to help them develop their individual potential fully. We also aim to enhance students' social and cultural awareness as well as their care for their country from a global perspective.

3 ACHIEVEMENTS AND REFLECTIONS ON MAJOR CONCERNS

Major Concern 1: To further promote a positive learning environment

Achievements ➢ The target this year is to enhance students’ perseverance, confidence and a good sense of responsibility in learning. Students are courageous in embracing challenges. Most of the strategies were achieved with satisfactory results. ➢ Students were cultivated with good study habits which included: (i) doing pre-lesson preparation, (ii) using note-taking skills effectively, (iii) submitting up-to-standard assignments on time and (iv) doing revision regularly. The percentages of students who agreed that they were able to fulfil the requirements were 74%, 97%, 90% and 61% respectively. The percentages of teachers who agreed that students were able to fulfil the requirements were 50%, 79%, 63% and 31% respectively. ➢ All teachers have praised students’ effort, given them constructive criticism and suggested ways for improvement. ➢ One student formation period and three morning sharing sessions about inspiring students to develop a sense of perseverance and confidence have been organized. The percentages of students in each level (S1 to S5) found the student formation period and the sharing sessions inspiring 76%, 72%, 56%, 44% and 40% respectively. ➢ All subject panels have devised requirements of producing quality test and examination papers in their subjects and 83% of the teachers said they were able to fulfil the requirements of producing quality test and examination papers. 98% of the teachers said they had made use of the markers’ reports and the data analysis to review and adjust their teaching. ➢ 98% of teachers have set achievable challenging tasks that provided opportunities for active participation of students. 79% of teachers were able to apply various teaching strategies, e.g. flipped classrooms or e-Learning, to make rooms for more lesson time on the challenging topics. ➢ Two school-wide academic weeks, one in each term, were organized successfully ➢ All subject panels have encouraged students to participate in external academic competitions or other activities. ➢ Sharing sessions for all teachers have been arranged in each term. ➢ Collaboration have been done in some subject panels and committees. ➢ All subject panels have provided opportunities for their members to share their good work in the subject panels or cross panels. 86% of the teachers found the arrangements useful. ➢ To cater for learner diversity, split classes of the core subjects were arranged strategically in different levels: English (S4 to S6); Chinese Languages (S3 & S4); Mathematics (S2 & S3); Liberal Studies (S5 & S6). Enhancement classes for core and elective subjects had been organized with the aid of the Diversity Learning Grant and the After-school Support Grant.

Reflections ➢ In order to strengthen students’ good study habits, the focus in the coming three years will be to develop and apply learning and teaching strategies to promote self-directed learning; to provide assessment criteria/hints/scaffolding and to monitor students’ performance. ➢ Continue to promote growth mind-set among students and encourage teachers to praise students’ effort taken and to give them constructive criticism and ways for improvement. ➢ To deepen the effect on inspiring students to develop a sense of perseverance and confidence, follow-up activities will be arranged after each sharing session. ➢ Continue to set challenging but achievable learning activities for students. ➢ Continue to encourage students to participate in external academic competitions and activities so as to enhance their confidence. ➢ Encourage teachers to participate more in sharing sessions from other schools or external organizations. ➢ Provide training for teachers to acquire the skills in promoting self-directed learning. ➢ Arrange more collaboration among teachers

5 Major Concern 2: To promote proactive life attitude

Achievements ➢ Goal setting and personal breakthrough programs were organized successfully. ➢ Challenging and surpassing activities have been organized which included: S1 – Growth Camp (organized by GC and RAC) S2 – Video Taking (organized by DC) S3 – Adventure activity (organized by LWL) S4 – Attend University Info Day (organized by CFSGC) S5 – Current affairs salon (organized by MCEC) ➢ The Guidance Committee has provided 2 training workshops for the Guidance Monitresses while the Prefects' Committee has provided 2 training days for prefects. All of them were run smoothly and successfully. ➢ The Head Prefects has joined the programmes of Federation of Youth Groups for three months. They then used what they have learned to teach their fellow ➢ The Life Buddies Programme of Cross Road Society has provided two workshops for students by the Bank of China. The workshops were about problem solving and services. ➢ To empower students to take the responsibilities of leading students, prefects were arranged to look after the S1 and S2 students, so that the prefects could act as role-models for S1 and S2 students.

6 Reflections ➢ 69.8% of students claimed that they have made a breakthrough personally or academically. ➢ Using questionnaire to ask students to evaluate their personal breakthrough was not accurate enough. Different task accomplishments should be used. ➢ Activities such as S1 Growth Camp, S4 University Information Day participation, and Current Affairs Salon, will continue in the coming year as they all provided good training for our students. ➢ Training activity for S2 similar to that for S1 will be organized so that the linkage will not be disconnected in their junior level of education. ➢ The students of S4 joined the open days of various universities then came back and shared what they have observed with their fellow schoolmates. By observation, most of the students did well and they dared to speak in front of their teachers and schoolmates in English – certainly a breakthrough to them. However, not all the content was good, more guidelines should be given to students so that they know how and what to present. ➢ Organizing the current affairs salon in the covered playground has several disadvantages. The sound system is not at all satisfactory and the noisy environment is also not an appropriate one. We should consider using room 411 or the school hall wherever possible. ➢ The training programs for Guidance Monitresses and Prefects were good for our students, they served the same purpose except to different target groups. The feedback from the participated students were good but the result did not really show in the Integrated Survey because the number of participated students was not much when compared with students of the whole school. ➢ The feedback from Head Prefects on the programmes of Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups was good too. They have developed much greater confidence in leading their team members. ➢ Students who joined the Life Buddies Programme reflected that the programme was demanding but very rewarding. They had first-hand experience on how to promote products in a real life situation. ➢ Prefects looked after S1 and S2 students was a good strategy but it required a lot of time and effort from Prefects. Most of the Prefects were at the senior levels and they had a lot of studies and duties to catch up. We need to find the pivot point to balance their duties and studies.
