Automotive industry is one of the strongest and fastest developing segments of the economy in Miskolc today represented by companies of international renown. The commitment of these businesses to the region can be seen not only in their role as employers but also in their contribution to the knowledge-based city concept through the implementation of research & development projects in collaboration with the University of Miskolc.

The constantly renewing automotive industry always in need of specialized expertise has already put Miskolc on the economic map of Europe. World renowned first tier companies now employ more than seven thousand people in the city (approx- imately 5 percent of the city inhabitants) and the automotive parts made here are sent to the most exotic countries of the world.Miskolc is the headquarters of NOHAC, the North Hungarian Automotive Cluster, one of the largest automotive associations in Hungary with its 77 members. SHINWA — The first impulse came from Japan

The 1998 investment of the Shinwa Company Group is to be considered as the first significant foreign investment in Miskolc. The production plant has been running continuously for 18 years, where injection moulding, painting, laser engraving and assembly departments operate. Shinwa Precision Hungary Ltd. has been functioning as a Tier 2 automotive supplier since the beginning. Nowadays, the Miskolc factory produces mostly button sets, front panels for air conditioning and multimedia con- trols and other decorative plastic parts. NOHAC — Uniting Automotive Suppliers

By now, Central Eastern Europe has become a global centre of car manufacturing; practically all significant European and Far East OEMs have manufacturing bases in the region. It is their vital interest to receive parts from local or not too far located suppliers, therefore firms in the region - among them members of the North Hungarian Automotive Cluster (NOHAC) - have a good chance to gain tiered supplier positions or strengthen their existing positions as such. NOHAC was established at the end of 2006 with the cooperation of three first tier supplier companies, the Innovation Management Co- operation Research Centre (IMKKK) at the University of Miskolc and BOKIK. The cluster operates with active support from the Chamber of Commerce and Trade even today. The objectives of NOHAC are to improve the competitiveness, innovative and revenue generating capacities of automotive suppliers in the region of Northern Hungary through their partnership bringing its members closer to European car manufacturing as well as European automotive OEMs to their current and future partners. Nu- merous companies have joined the cluster since its establishment and it now has 77 members. The majority of cluster members are metal or plastic working companies, but you can also find design firms, certification and other services among their ranks. Member companies of the cluster employ over 16,000 people and their yearly turnover reaches 731 billion forints with export revenues exceed- ing 569 billion forints. Before deciding on new locations, companies study many different factors, first the working culture and traditions of the given industry then the level and conditions of education, training and vocational training in particu- lar. Therefore the quality of educational background and infrastructure has a key role in investment decisions.

In Miskolc, 32 vocational and technical secondary institutions, 15 grammar schools and 35 elementary institutions work in concert to train skilled workers and craftsmen of the future. The University of Miskolc, at the top of this training pyramid, boasts of being the successor of the world’s first technical higher education institution.

Currently 7 faculties operate at the university where the Faculty of Earth Science and Engineering, the Faculty of Materials Science and Engineering and the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Informatics train engineers in well equipped laboratories with up-to-date study materials. The faculties of social sciences provide training in Law, Economics and the Arts. Addition- al attractions of the university are the Healthcare Faculty and the Bartók Béla Institute of Music. The University of Miskolc has extensive international relationships based primarily on cooperation agreements with partner institutions abroad, but the campus is also busy with a large number of faculty or department level projects, professional cooperation, and international research work.
