Koko The Gorilla

SSM

1. One day in 1971, while at the San Francisco Zoo, a Stanford graduate student named Penny Patterson met a female western lowland gorilla named Koko. What happened next was extraordinary. She made an 1. arrangement with the zoo to teach the baby gorilla sign language as part of her Ph. D project. The gorilla would go on to achieve worldwide fame in 1. the late 70s and early 80s for its incredible perceived language skills, sensitivity, and appeal. Koko is said to know over two thousand English words but the extent to which Koko exhibits language or mimicking skills has been debated by experts. The gorilla was twice on the cover of Gorilla intelligence National Geographic and just about everyone has seen the image of Koko mourning the death of her pet kitten. She inspired the children’s book

Koko’s Kitten and has her own brand line of toys. She has met celebrities

such as Robin Williams, Sting, William Shatner, and Leonardo DiCaprio. She is indeed the most famous gorilla on the planet. At first, it was a cute experiment but over the past forty five years there has been a strange mix of love and commitment along with controversy and regret. In fact, this whole rather odd tale is the subject of a PBS documentary called Koko: The Gorilla Who Talks. The documentary takes viewers into the lives and history of Koko and Penny. It is both moving and strange and some argue that it is the strongest case for leaving animals alone and not to interfere in1. With Robin Williams nature. From the beginning, Penny has treated Koko like her child. She has given the gorilla birthday parties and showered it with love. The PBS camera crew got to see this relationship firsthand after spending a month in filming. The crew also had the luxury of combing through two thousand hours of archival footage that has been collected over the forty four years

of their sign language experiment known as “Project Koko.” Penny and Koko’s relationship during all these years has been described as that of a mother and daughter. Every day Penny drives to a seven acre sanctuary in

Woodside, California and visits Koko. Despite having an exceedingly close relationship with Koko, Penny has been criticized for subjecting Koko to an unnatural life whereby the gorilla has never mothered a baby (despite efforts) and in which Koko has been so attached to Penny that people wonder what will happen when one of them dies. Both are entering the twilights of their lives. Both human and gorilla have led unusual lives. One thing is certain: these two love each other immensely! Mr. and Mrs. Brown traveled to the majestic coastal Canadian province of Nova Scotia this November. Nova Scotia is renowned for its rugged beauty and salty, wind-burned

fishermen. It is a land that reminded

early settlers of their homelands in Scotland and Ireland. With rolling green hills, fertile farmlands, rocky sea cliffs, lighthouses and gulls; Nova Scotia forms the perfect backdrop for a fisherman’s or farmer’s paradise. We visited the

Halifax Annapolis Valley on this trip, Mr. Brown making stops at the Grand Pre National Historic Site, Port Royal, the Blomidon Lookoff, and Hall’s Harbor. All are hot spots for tourists. We also visited one of the few prep schools in the region, King’s Edgehill located in Windsor. King’s Edgehill dates back to 1789 when

Charles Inglis founded it and built a school far away from the city capital

of Halifax and the distractions of a

Annapolis Valley sailor’s port. There was no Peggy’s Cove Thanksgiving holiday for these students as Canadians celebrate that holiday in mid-October. School was in session and students were dressed in their uniforms. Finally, on the way back from Nova Scotia, we stopped in the quaint New Brunswick town of St. Andrew’s. We booked a room right on the Passamaquoddy Bay. It was magnificent. Next up for us is

Foods from Abroad

From Spain

Paella is an incredibly tasty Spanish rice dish that includes

seafood, meat, vegetables, and seasonings such as saffron or rosemary. According to Valencian tradition, paella is cooked over an open fire fueled by orange and pine branches along with pine cones. This produces an aromatic smoke which infuses the paella. Most modern families cook paella on the stove top. They may also add chorizo, rabbit, chicken, snails, green beans, butter beans, artichoke, and more. Of course, salt and pepper is added to the ensemble. Growing up with a Peruvian stepmother who used to make paella regularly, I was treated to this wonderful dish on a monthly basis. Needless to say, it remains as one of my all-time Paella favorites!

From France Moules Mariniers is a delicious French seafood dish involving mussels. The recipe is very simple. Mussels are washed thoroughly in cold water and placed into a pot. Shallots, fresh parsley, garlic, pepper, and white wine are added. The mussels are cooked on high heat until they open. If you want fresh tasting

mussels, once they open do not let them sit on the stove any

longer. Immediately remove the pot from the burner. Grab a piece

of French bread to dip into the broth! You’ll love this dish. Moules Mariniers 1.

From South Korea Nakji Bokkeum is an amazingly tasty Korean dish made with octopus and a spicy mixture. Essentially, fresh octopus is stir- fried with vegetables in a sauce of chili paste, chili powder, green peppers, and chili peppers. These chilies congregate to create one

extra fiery dish. When done, the chewy, tender octopus swims in a thick, dark-red caramelized sauce that is so good it makes you forget your mouth is on fire. Koreans love spicy food! If you’re old enough, you may want to wash down the spice with an ice 1. cold beer which many Korean men and women do. Nakji Bokkeum

From Switzerland Cheese Fondue is a great meal to share with friends and is perhaps the most iconic Swiss dish out there. It consists of fresh melted cheese, garlic, white wine, corn starch, and cherry brandy served up on the table in a special pot called a caquelon with a small burner underneath it. Diners spear small cubes of bread on long forks and dip into the hot cheese. Once you pull the bread

out, make sure you blow it cool. Now, you’re ready to eat! Cheese Fondue

World Mysteries

The Lindbergh Baby Mystery

The year was 1932 and the place was the stately country residence of one Mr. Charles Augustus Lindbergh. Five years earlier (1927) Lindbergh had become the first man to make a trans-Atlantic flight which propelled him to icon status in the United States. In fact, at the time Lindbergh was perhaps the most famous man in the world. He and his lovely wife Anne had produced a little boy named Charlie who the press quickly dubbed “Little Lindy”. Fast-forward to the foggy and st drizzly night of March 1 , 1932. The Lindbergh’s had just returned from dinner out to their estate in Hopewell, New Jersey.

In the early part of the evening kidnappers used a ladder to climb up to a second story window where little Charlie was sleeping and snatched the baby. No one heard a thing. A ransom note was left and negotiations

with the kidnappers stretched out for weeks. Midnight meetings in a graveyard in which cash was

exchanged occurred but the little guy never returned. The body was found a mere five miles from the family home in a ditch alongside a walking path. Although there were a few suspects in the case and eventually the arrest of a German immigrant, to this day FBI experts believe that a team of kidnappers had to be involved. The abduction of the Lindbergh baby goes down as one of the most confounding in American criminal history. Not only has it been a perplexing case but it is also tragic. The kidnappers were so ruthless that they were willing to kill little Charlie and dump his body on the side of a road. RIP little fella!

The Mystery of Sailing Stones In the dry lakebed of Racetrack Death Valley stones as big as 700 pounds mysteriously slide across the surface of the Earth without any known external forces acting upon them. While some researchers believe that a combination of natural events, such as wind and ice, causes these stones to “sail”, others question this theory pointing out that the stones don’t follow a predictable path and

change directions abruptly. Over time, stones have fallen from the mountainside onto the lake bed. Some of the stones weigh as much as seven hundred pounds. Once they are situated on the incredibly flat surface, one might be inclined to think that they would sit undisturbed for thousands of years. This, however, is not the case. These gigantic rocks and boulders (known also as Sliding Rocks or Moving Rocks) are found all over the dry lake bed with long trails, or racetracks, having formed behind them, extending for hundreds of meters. Since there is no evidence of human or animal intervention in the movement of these stones, one has to wonder how this phenomenon occurs? The first documented accounts of the sliding rock phenomenon date back to 1915, when a prospector named Joseph Crook visited the Racetrack Playa site and observed giant boulders with

long tracks inscribed on the smooth valley floor. Crook reasoned that no human being could have done this

and wondered what caused the boulders to move. In 1948, a geologist named Jim McCallister published a report about the phenomenon in American Bulletin. To this day, no one knows what causes the sliding.
