  • 1 Jejak Warisan Pahang Pencetus Tamadun

  • Mosque Tourism in Malaysia: a Marketing Perspective
International Journal of Social Science Research e-ISSN: 2710-6276 | Vol. 1, No. 2, 108-120, 2019 http://myjms.moe.gov.my/index.php/ijssr MOSQUE TOURISM IN MALAYSIA: A MARKETING PERSPECTIVE Norhanim Abdul Razak1* 1 School of Tourism, Hospitality and Event Management, College of Law, Government and International Studies, Universiti Utara Malaysia, Sintok, Kedah, MALAYSIA *Corresponding author: [email protected] Accepted: 6 December 2019 | Published: 16 December 2019 Abstract: Mosque tourism is one of the niche areas in the field of Islamic tourism that is expanding rapidly. The presence of mosques with outstanding historical, heritage, and aesthetic values have attracted foreign and domestic tourists to visit, appreciate, and experience these Muslim places of worship. As Islamic tourism is gaining popularity and the importance of mosques as tourist attractions is growing, it is therefore useful to explore mosque tourism in the context of Malaysia. While a number of investigations have researched mosque tourism in the contexts of motivations, residents’ attitudes, and architecture uniqueness, limited studies have examined Muslim places of worship from the perspective of marketing. Hence, this paper focuses on how Malaysian mosques have been promoted in tourism materials. Content analysis was utilised in the assessment of textual descriptions and visual images of mosques that have been featured in tourism promotions for over seven decades. Findings of this paper uncovered that mosques have been represented in tourism brochures published from 1969 to August 2019. Two of the earliest mosques that appeared in tourism brochures are Kapitan Kling Mosque and the Malay Mosque (Masjid Kampung Melayu) in the promotion of Penang as a tourist destination.

  • PENANG MUSEUMS, CULTURE and HISTORY Abu Talib Ahmad
Kajian Malaysia, Vol. 33, Supp. 2, 2015, 153–174 PENANG MUSEUMS, CULTURE AND HISTORY Abu Talib Ahmad School of Humanities, Universiti Sains Malaysia, MALAYSIA Email: [email protected] The essay studies museums in Penang, their culture displays and cultural contestation in a variety of museums. Penang is selected as case study due to the fine balance in population numbers between the Malays and the Chinese which is reflected in their cultural foregrounding in the Penang State Museum. This ethnic balance is also reflected by the multiethnic composition of the state museum board. Yet behind this façade one could detect the existence of culture contests. Such contests are also found within the different ethnic groups like the Peranakan and non-Peranakan Chinese or the Malays and the Indian-Muslims. This essay also examines visitor numbers and the attractiveness of the Penang Story. The essay is based on the scrutiny of museum exhibits, museum annual reports and conversations with former and present members of the State Museum Board. Keywords: Penang museums, State Museum Board, Penang Story, museum visitors, culture and history competition INTRODUCTION The phrase culture wars might have started in mid-19th century Germany but it came into wider usage since the 1960s in reference to the ideological polarisations among Americans into the liberal and conservative camps (Hunter, 1991; Luke, 2002). Although not as severe, such wars in Malaysia are manifested by the intense culture competition within and among museums due to the pervasive influence of ethnicity in various facets of the national life. As a result, museum foregrounding of culture and history have become contested (Matheson- Hooker, 2003: 1–11; Teo, 2010: 73–113; Abu Talib, 2008: 45–70; 2012; 2015).

TRANSFORMATION OF MOSQUE ARCHITECTURE IN MALAYSIA: CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF ARCHITECTURAL HISTORY APPROACHES Megat Ariff Shah, Ezrin Arbi & Nila Inangda Faculty of Built Environment, University of Malaya [email protected] ABSTRACT Malaysia’s rich historical background has resulted in a unique local architecture that exhibits complex and wide-ranging variations and influences. Amongst the different types of architecture, mosques are unique as it has an unchanging and eternal primary function – as a place for communal worship – whilst architecturally has been constantly evolving since the earliest mosques were erected in this country. Current inquiries in the field of architectural history of mosques in Malaysia have primarily focused on inventory-based historical studies, comparative studies and thematic studies in the form of monographs, all of which tend to be non-holistic and compartmentalized in their approach. Subsequently, the main objective of this paper is to establish a holistic approach in studying mosque architecture by linking the earliest mosques to contemporary ones and mapping their formal relationships through the use of typological classification.

  • And Its Implementation of Interfaith Dialogue in Mosque Penang, Malaysia
THE ROLE OF ISLAMIC PROPAGATION SOCIETY INTERNATIONAL (IPSI) AND ITS IMPLEMENTATION OF INTERFAITH DIALOGUE IN MOSQUE PENANG, MALAYSIA Muhammad Yusuf Khalid,1 Panji Hidayat Mazhisham,2 Nur Husna Mohamad Hussain,3 Ahmad Najaa’ Haji Mokhtar,4 Khairunneezam Mohd Noor,5 and Muhamad Zaki Mustafa6 Abstract This paper attempts to highlight the role of Islamic Propagation Society International (IPSI) in Interfaith Dialogue in Penang, Malaysia. Although the concept of interfaith dialogue is mentioned explicitly in the Holy Qur’an about 1400 years ago, it is still not commonly practiced today, partly because it needs the engagement from both sides, this regards for example the Muslim-Christian engagement. Due the wide spread of misconceptions and stereotypes against Islam in this era of globalization, Muslim scholars started to reactivate this divine effort. The contribution of late Ahmad Deedat who has inspired young Muslim to engage in this interfaith activity, as a result, the increasing number of Muslim personalities excel in this field such as Dr. Zakir Naik, Dr. Shabbir Ally, Hamza Tzortzis and Abdullah al-Andalusi to name a few. Surely, interfaith dialogue is one of the many effective ways to clear misconceptions about Islam and Muslims. This research is mainly based on observations and interviews at the Kapitan Keling mosque, Penang and IPSI headquarters in Penang. The research findings show that IPSI 1 Associate Professor in Program of Da’wah and Islamic Management, Faculty of Leadership and Management, Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia. 2 PhD Candidate in Faculty of Leadership and Management, Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia. 3 Lecturer in Kolej Universiti Islam Selangor.
