CHICKENSHED presents

Rapunzel Director’s Notes A Journey of Renewal and Discovery A world premiere of a brand new musical As I approach my last few days as Artistic Director of Chickenshed after five years, it is glorious to be able to reflect on the many shows I have been in charge of. During that time, the crowning moment of the year has always been the creation of our unique, inclusive Christmas show. During the past year however, because of the Covid pandemic which has crippled the theatre and performing arts world, we were unable to present a 2020 Christmas Written and directed by Lou Stein show. We did try a socially distanced, scaled down version of our ever-popular production of David Walliams’ Mr Stink for a heroic nine performances in December, before we had to Music by Dave Carey close and go into lockdown again. So this online presentation of Rapunzel, which was the Lyrics by Lou Stein and Dave Carey second Christmas show I directed at Chickenshed, has added significance for me. It is at once a reminder of the power of our diverse and inclusive approach and also an indicator of how online presentations of our work have made those works available to thousands of new audiences on an international scale. There is now a renewed emphasis on how important it is for our theatres to embrace online technology and use it to reach out to new audiences, as Devised by Chickenshed we yearn to return to the irreplaceable experience of live theatre. How Rapunzel Was Created In the creation of Rapunzel, I worked more closely than ever with our young people. The script I had written for the company was influenced by a number of workshops which our youth theatre did on the themes which the story of Rapunzel suggested. Not only did they influence it, but many of their ideas made it into the show. Eventually during rehearsals, their voices shaped the production, coupled with the thrill of doing a new work never before performed at Chickenshed, with a wonderful set design to frame it. With the inclusive approach in full flow during final rehearsals, they shaped and gave the words and music that unique Chickenshed life, where individuality and trust as a collective ensemble become the essence of the show. It was truly a creative and at the same time military-like operation with over 800 young people involved. The story that we tell about Rapunzel, her magical stage filling hair, her jealous witch-mother, and a rather clumsy woodsman entranced by the wilful Rapunzel, was created for the first time and we created it together. It was a great joy getting to know individuals so well and helping them let their voices enter the world of Rapunzel. The sheer energy that they infuse the performances with had been so exciting for me to be a part of, helping me to evolve an inclusive language for the Chickenshed Christmas shows in Rapunzel and beyond. So sit back, and re-capture the holiday spirit that Rapunzel inhabits as she tries to escape the clutches of a scary witch, and find out who she really is in the world, and what really matters. Our sincere thanks and And thank you for the support of my work during the past five years. Like Rapunzel, it has appreciation to the partners been a fairy tale journey for me and one which I will carry proudly into the next phase of my and staff of GM Real Estate for career. sponsoring this year’s production.

On behalf of us all… thank you.

Lou Stein www.gmreal.com Artistic Director “Hair” An interview So why Rapunzel? Lou Stein: It seemed that the story of a young girl with writer Lou Stein coming of age was very relevant to a lot of people here, and composer Dave Carey their families and our audiences.

Dave Carey: And in essence Rapunzel is a simple story Can you describe the collaborative process for writing a which allows us to find the devices within it to develop the brand new musical? “Chickenshed” elements of the production, so we have the option of Lou Stein: It changes every year, but early on we bat titles developing our large character groups while still maintaining the clear around, and we decide if that’s something we want to go for. through line of the story. Should we be doing this, and is it something that inspires us? And the Youth Theatre were directly involved in developing the piece? Dave Carey: We both have to feel that we can do something with Lou Stein: Absolutely. It’s a renewed direction that we’re taking with the it, that there’s enough material that’s going to engage with the company – involving our young people in these processes. We engaged size of cast that we have – and that there’s the possibility to the Youth Theatre members in workshops and development, and we had a develop the story. big session where I spoke with them about the Rapunzel themes and what interested them and what didn’t. So for example the idea of a Prince – they Lou Stein: There’s a certain amount of fearlessness in thought that was pretty old fashioned, and out of that came the idea of the creating a big new musical like this, we don’t have the woodsman who’s orphaned and in the woods. luxury of three months of previews as you might have elsewhere. We start with agreeing the title, and then Dave Dave, you’ve worked on over 20 Christmas shows for Chickenshed – and I talk through ideas and atmosphere. does it get easier? Dave Carey: And what Lou does - that I really like - is to start off Dave Carey: It doesn’t get any easier, it doesn’t get any harder – it’s just with a lot of research, a lot of reading and a lot of exploring. We different every time. There are always lessons to learn – every time you do it, both like the organic process to take its time. For me, if you’re there are more lessons to be learnt. That’s the joy of working with our huge, writing the first song three days after you’ve agreed the title, then diverse cast – they’re always going to inspire you. you probably haven’t got it right! Lou Stein: And this Rapunzel could happen nowhere else but Lou Stein: So we decided on the title in early 2017, and because Chickenshed – what we might have created for another company we don’t have the luxury of being able to go away for six months, might be very different. We have the cast rota groups in mind, and that initial research for me takes the form of going to the British the requirements to create a script that is open enough so it can be Library and reading loads of takes on Rapunzel. Dave likes explored in a very free way. And Dave is a very skilled expert at creating and understands research, so I can come and say, “I’ve stuff that will work for our members and students – as well as being able just read an obscure 16th century version of Rapunzel,” to take one of my complicated lyrics and make it work! and he’ll either say, “That’s rubbish” or “That’s really interesting.” Finally, what will audiences see that they may not expect? Lou Stein: The story is entirely new – and there is much more Dave Carey: And in fact that 16th century emphasis on the woodland creatures and the magical, almost story then began to inform the music – I was Narnia-like, world that Rapunzel finds herself in. very interested in having a medieval influence in the music. And Lou at the same time was Dave Carey: That was a thought that Lou had discovering the Dryads and other different early on – that this show invites you in to a characters that also seemed to lend brand new world. It’s very different from themselves to that medieval setting. your standard Rapunzel and hopefully audiences will agree that’s what we’ve created. GirlPower ... The Rather Knotty Problem with Fairy tales ‘Once upon a time’ and ‘happily ever after’ are phrases that we’ve grown up with, that trip off the tongue and remind us of the not-so distant years of childhood and comfort. Indeed, fairy tales have existed ever since narrative began and perhaps surprisingly, a number of fairy tales were in fact first told by female storytellers. These were tales of ‘matriarchal mythology’, often featuring strong female figures such as goddesses or dominant princesses. When we think of fairy tales today, however, the females who spring to mind are the 19th century archetypes of the ‘damsel in distress’ or the ‘evil witch’, rather than the headstrong heroines that precede them.

Over time, original folk stories were distorted to reflect the values of a male-dominated society, creating the fairy tales that we have come to know today such as Cinderella, Snow White and of course Rapunzel. These later descendants of the mythologies of old are steeped in patriarchal values whereby gender roles are neatly defined and female subordination is depicted as a romantic and perfect fate. So why are fairy tales still enjoyed when we live in a society that no longer subscribes to these outdated ideals, where mainstream media is filled with stories of women fighting patriarchy and condemning male abuse of power? How is it that these stories still have a place in modern society?

Anthropologists tell us that storytelling is central to human existence and that it is common to every culture. Human beings have told stories for millennia, and the very fact that some of these tales have maintained a place in literature until the present day suggests an almost innate human need to tell them. Fairy tales in particular have the capacity to serve as moralistic stories, educating and informing young minds. Core values such as kindness, generosity and perseverance in the face of adversity are timeless principles, whereas lessons that are taught in order to adhere to attitudes of the time have become obsolete. Traditional fairy tales popularised by the Brothers Grimm were adapted to mould young children into correct social functions; the ideal young woman would be beautiful, feminine and domesticated whilst the model male would be heroic. These are narratives so outdated in our day and age that powerful female writers have begun to step up to the challenge of dismantling them.

Angela Carter, for example, known for her feminist writing and works of magical realism, is a figure who shows us that outdated fairy tales can indeed be redefined. Carter’s The Bloody Chamber makes use of the classic fairy tale plot but challenges the equation that happily-ever-after equals heterosexual marriage and untroubled routine. In this reworking of Bluebeard, Carter uses a number of literary tropes to subvert traditional values. A first-person narrative gives the previously subjugated female a voice and identity and it is the protagonist’s courageous, as opposed to wretched, mother who shoots the character of Bluebeard, not a gallant prince or wise father.

We continue to see many other traditional fairy tales repackaged and reworked through many different mediums: film, literature, television and of course, theatre. Just as they have done in the past, fairy tales it seems will continue to have a place in society as long as they adapt to their society and times. With this notion of perpetual change in mind, one has to wonder: what will the Rapunzel story look like in 100 years’ time?
