A’s Select Marshall from Sacramento; Option Mortensen To Sacramento

OAKLAND, Calif. – The Oakland A’s selected left-handed Jay Marshall from Triple-A Sacramento and optioned right-handed pitcher Clayton Mortensen to Sacramento, the club announced today.

Marshall has spent the entire 2009 season at Sacramento where he compiled a 5-3 record, seven saves and a 3.20 ERA in a Pacific Coast League leading 50 appearances. He yielded just two home runs in 50.2 innings and his .280 opponents batting average included a .179 mark against left-handed hitters. The 26-year old left-hander had an 11.25 ERA in 10 outings since the Triple-A All-Star Break after posting a 1.69 ERA in 40 appearances before the break, including a 21.0-inning scoreless streak from April 27 to June 6. Marshall made his Major League debut with Oakland in 2007 and was 1-2 with a 6.43 ERA in 51 relief appearances after being selected from the organization in the . Boston claimed him off waivers on October 15, 2007 but the A’s got him back off waivers on December 6, 2007.

Mortensen was recalled from Sacramento yesterday to start last night’s game against Kansas City. He allowed eight runs on eight hits and three walks in 4.0 innings while striking out five and took the loss. Mortensen was acquired from the St. Louis Cardinals along with and in the trade on July 24 and made his ML debut with St. Louis earlier this year on June 29 against San Francisco. He is 0-1 with a 12.86 ERA in two ML appearances. The 24-year old right-hander was 7-6 with a 4.37 ERA in 17 starts with Memphis and 0-0 with a 1.64 ERA in two starts for Sacramento for a 7-6 record and a 4.11 ERA in 19 minor league starts overall.
