Washington’s Top-2 Primary Election In each race, you may vote for any candidate listed. The two candidates who receive the most votes in the August Primary will advance to the November General Election.

Each candidate for partisan offi ce may state a political party that he or she prefers. A candidate’s preference does not imply that the candidate is nominated or endorsed by the party, or that the party approves of or associates with that candidate. Partisan Races and Judges

Partisan Races*: All partisan races, regardless of the number of candidates, will appear on the Primary Election ballot. However, only the top two candidates will advance to the General Election ballot. Nonpartisan races only appear on the Primary Election ballot if more than two candidates fi led for the position. *Exception: PCO races - see above.

State Judicial Races: Supreme Court candidates and Court of Appeals candidates, regardless of number, will appear on the Primary Election ballot. In cases where two or more candidates fi le for a position, if one of the candidates receives a majority of votes in the Primary, only that candidate will advance to the General Election ballot. If no candidate receives a majority in the Primary, then the top two advance to the General Election ballot.

Superior Court races only appear on the Primary Election ballot if more than one candidate fi les for the position. If only one candidate fi les for a position, that candidate is deemed elected at the end of fi ling week. If two or more candidates fi le, and one candidate receives a majority of votes in the Primary, he or she is deemed elected.
