2 GATHERING IN GOD’S NAME

As is traditional on festival occasions, the 10am liturgy begins with a procession. Processions are an ancient and scriptural expression of God’s people celebrating the call to be a pilgrim people. The course of the procession forms the symbol of infinity: a reminder to us that we are in the presence of God who is our beginning and our end, and that we are entering into a foretaste of the eternal banquet to which Christ calls us all. When the entrance bell is rung, all stand to sing the hymn

PROCESSIONAL HYMN 1 I bind unto myself today the strong name of the Trinity by invocation of the same, the Three in One, and One in Three.

2 5 I bind this day to me forever, Against all Satan’s spells and wiles, by power of faith, Christ’s incarnation, against false words of heresy, his baptism in the Jordan river, against the knowledge that defiles, his death on cross for my salvation, against the heart’s idolatry, his bursting from the spicèd tomb, against the wizard’s evil craft, his riding up the heavenly way, against the death wound and the burning, his coming at the day of doom: the choking wave, the poisoned shaft, I bind unto myself today. protect me, Christ, till your returning.

Christ in mouth of friend and stranger.

4 7 All I bind unto myself today I bind unto myself the name, the power of God to hold and lead, the strong name of the Trinity, his eye to watch, his might to stay, by invocation of the same, his ear to hearken to my need, the Three in One, and One in Three, the wisdom of my God to teach, of whom all nature has creation, his hand to guide, his shield to ward, eternal Father, Spirit, Word. the word of God to give me speech, Praise to the Lord of my salvation: his heavenly host to be my guard. salvation is of Christ the Lord. THE LITURGY OF THE WORD A reading from the prophet Isaiah. 6:1-8

In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lofty; and the hem of his robe filled the temple. Seraphs were in attendance above him; each had six wings: with two they covered their faces, and with two they covered their feet, and with two they flew. And one called to another and said: ‘Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory.’ The pivots on the thresholds shook at the voices of those who called, and the house filled with smoke. And I said: ‘Woe is me! I am lost, for I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips; yet my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts!’ Then one of the seraphs flew to me, holding a live coal that had been taken from the altar with a pair of tongs. 5 The seraph touched my mouth with it and said: ‘Now that this has touched your lips, your guilt has departed and your sin is blotted out.‘ Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?’ And I said, ‘Here am I; send me!’

For the word of the Lord, thanks be to God. PSALM 29

Please repeat after the choir and then sing as indicated

1 Ascribe to the Lord you powers of heaven, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength. Ascribe to the Lord the honour due unto his name; worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness. R 2 The voice of the Lord is upon the waters the God of glory thunders, the Lord is upon the mighty waters, the voice of the Lord is mighty in operation; the voice of the Lord is a glorious voice. R 3 The Lord sits enthroned above the water-flood; the Lord sits enthroned as king for evermore. The Lord shall give strength to his people; the Lord shall give his people the blessing of peace. R

A reading from the letter of Paul to the Romans. 8:12-17

Brothers and sisters, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh – for if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption. When we cry, ‘Abba! Father!’ it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ – if, in fact, we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him.

For the word of the Lord, thanks be to God.

6 [stand] GRADUAL HYMN 1 Father all-loving, thou rulest in majesty, judgment is thine, and condemneth our pride; stir up our rulers and peoples to penitence, sorrow for sins that for vengeance have cried. 2 Blessèd Lord Jesus, thou camest in poverty, sharing a stable with beasts at thy birth, stir us to work for thy justice and charity, truly to care for the poor upon earth. 3 Come, Holy Spirit, create in us holiness, lift up our lives to thy standard of right; stir every will to new ventures of faithfulness, flood the whole Church with thy glorious light. 4 Holiest Trinity, perfect in Unity, bind in thy love every nation and race: may we adore thee for time and eternity, Father, Redeemer, and Spirit of grace.

Patrick Robert Norman Appleford (b. 1925) Tune: Was lebet (TIS 160)

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION & READING

Please repeat after the Choir, then sing after the verse

Glory to God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit: as in the beginning, so now, and for ever. Alleluia.

Please turn to face the proclamation of the Gospel

The Lord be with you. And also with you.

A reading from the holy Gospel according to John. 3:1-17 Glory to you Lord Jesus Christ. There was a Pharisee named Nicodemus, a leader of the Jews. He came to Jesus by night and said to him, ‘Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God; for no one can do these signs that you do apart from the presence of God.’ 7 Jesus answered him, ‘Very truly, I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God without being born from above.’ Nicodemus said to him, ‘How can anyone be born after having grown old? Can one enter a second time into the mother’s womb and be born?’ Jesus answered, ‘Very truly, I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit. What is born of the flesh is flesh, and what is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not be astonished that I said to you, “You must be born from above.” The wind blows where it chooses, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.’ Nicodemus said to him, ‘How can these things be?’ Jesus answered him, ‘Are you a teacher of Israel, and yet you do not understand these things? Very truly, I tell you, we speak of what we know and testify to what we have seen; yet you do not receive our testimony. If I have told you about earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you about heavenly things? No one has ascended into heaven except the one who descended from heaven, the Son of Man. And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.’

For the Gospel of the Lord, praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.

Sunday School gathering prayer – Mother Linda

Sermon – Father Paul

A brief pause for reflection follows the sermon

The Nicene Creed is said, the deacon says [stand] Let us together affirm the faith of the Church:

We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became truly human.

8 For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE FAITHFUL The deacon says [kneel or sit] Let us pray for the world and for the Church. Prayers and thanksgivings are offered After each prayer After last prayer …in your mercy, Rest eternal grant to them, O Lord; hear our prayer. and let light perpetual shine upon them.

The presiding priest says Almighty God, you have promised to hear our prayers. Grant that what we have asked in faith we may by your grace receive, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

[stand] THE GREETING OF PEACE We are the body of Christ. His Spirit is with us.

The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you.

You are invited to exchange a sign of peace with those around you A collection is taken up during the hymn 9 OFFERTORY HYMN

INTERMENT OF ASHES ALAN WARNE & FLORANCE GOLDSBURY

In the name of God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen.

The Lord be with you. And also with you.

God our Father, in loving care your hand has created us, and as the potter fashions the clay you have formed us in your image. Through the Holy Spirit you have breathed into us the gift of life. In the sharing of love you have enriched our knowledge of you and of one another. We claim your love today, as we commit these remains of Alan to their resting place and these remains of Florance to their resting place: earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust, in sure and certain hope of the resurrection to eternal life.

Thanks be to God who gives us the victory through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen!

Behold, I will tell you a mystery! We will not all fall asleep, but we will all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. For this perishable nature must put on the imperishable, and this mortal body must put on immortality. [1 Corinthians 15:51-53]

God of hope, grant that we, with all who have believed in you, may be united in the full knowledge of your love and the unclouded vision of your glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

May Alan & Florance, with Sadie and all the faithful departed, through the love and mercy of God, rest in peace and rise in glory. Amen.

A Prayer for Reconciliation

Gracious God of holy dreaming, from the beginning of time many peoples have gathered on this land. Since that time many more have gathered from all parts of the world. Many times that gathering has been in a spirit of peace but also many times in a spirit of conflict and conquest. Help us to recognise the differences and to restore that spirit of peace and harmony in which all people can live. Help us to gather in prayer and praise in your name, to reach out for your peace, and to see your justice done. We thank you for being able to gather in our diversity. In the beauty of that diversity you reconcile us to you and to each other. Bless us and what we do in the name of the one who knows us and brings us together, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
