Sustainable Tourism (MULT1550) Introduction Green tourism is a form of ecotourism in a broad sense, which involves appreciation and learning of ecology, culture and geology in the tours. Ideally, green tourism respects both the local people and natural environment on the one hand, and raises participants' awareness of environmental protection and cultural preservation on the other hand. In some cases, it can even contribute to the local sustainable development by tourism income.

Hong Kong is an amazing place for green tourism: Over 40% of ’s land is countryside; there are 24 country parks, 4 marine parks, 8 geo-areas in Global Geopark, 17 reservoirs surrounded by country trails, 4 long distance hiking trails and so on. Apart from country parks, there are internationally renowned Mai Po for bird watching, Wetland Park, Nam Sang Wai wetlands, Fung Yuen Butterfly Reserve, Sha Lo Tung for dragonfly watching, the southwestern waters for watching Chinese white dolphins. Therefore, the local environment is very suitable for green tourism.

In addition to more than 3000 types of vascular plants, over 500 species of birds, over 200 species of butterflies and over 100 species of dragonflies, you can also find rich cultural resources in Hong Kong, such as Heritage Trail with 500-700 years of history, Heritage Trail in , numerous monuments in Sheung Wan, Central and Wan Chai, and the traditional ways of life preserved in Temple Street and Kowloon Walled City. Together with various military monuments, 102 Tin Hau Temples and scattered fishing villages, you will have endless enjoyment when you go on a green tour in Hong Kong! Programme Type Thematic Talk Speaker Dennis Woo is a freelancer and the chairman of D Workshop LS Commune. He received his master’s degree in Geography and Resource Management from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He worked as an instructor at CUHK and taught geography and liberal studies in secondary schools. He has also been a geoecological and cultural docent for more than 15 years.

Dennis is currently a frontline worker in nature education, a performer in RTHK TV programmes for liberal studies, an instructor at Hong Kong College of Technology and a guest host at Metro Radio. He also teaches ecotourism, nature photography, pot culture, eco-friendly handicrafts, landscape sketch and culinary art in various institutions as well as working as a freelance writer.
