Chicago Cubs Draft History By: WISCGRAD Chicago Cubs Draft History By: WISCGRAD During the 1964 winter meetings, major league teams voted on the draft. Initially four teams opposed the idea, the Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Yankees, New York Mets, and St. Louis Cardinals. In the end only the Cardinals voted against the proposal and in 1965 Major League Baseball held its inaugural First-Year Player Draft, also known as the Rule 4 Draft. Initially there were three phases to the draft: a June phase for those college and high school athletes who had just graduated, an August Legion phase for those athletes who completed amateur summer leagues, and a January phase for those high school and college athletes who graduated in the winter. The August phase lasted only two years, and the January phase was terminated after 1986. The Chicago Cubs did not draft a single player in either of the two August drafts, but have participated in each January and June draft since their inception. In analyzing the draft history of the Cubs I have grouped all January and June selections of the same year, following how the data is organized at Baseball Cube. In total there have been 43 distinct draft years for the Chicago Cubs organized by nine different general managers. John Holland presided over the Cubs first 11 drafts. After the brief one-year reign of Salty Saltwell, Bob Kennedy manned the next five drafts, and Dallas Green (1982-1987), Jim Frey (1988-1991), and Larry Himes (1992-1994) followed. The second half of the 1990s was overseen by Ed Lynch. Then after just two years of Andy MacPhail, Jim Hendry took over in 2003 and remains the general manager today. To date the Cubs have drafted 2,100 players. Many of those went unsigned, and while some were subsequently drafted by other teams and eventually made the big leagues, I only focus on those players actually drafted and signed by the Cubs. Of those, 197, or 9%, have reached the major leagues. Because so many of these major leaguers had short careers, I also noted those players who had significant major league careers, defined as five years or more. 94 players, or 4% of those drafted, fit such a criteria. These numbers will change as those drafted recently begin to reach the major leagues. The Cubs have developed the most big league pitchers compared other positions, although this is not surprising given the composition of major league rosters. What is surprising is the notable success in drafting and developing catchers as compared other positions. The complete positional breakdown is below: Statistically speaking, the 1965, 1967, and 2000 drafts were the best at developing major leaguers with 23%, 21%, and 20% of those players drafted eventually being signed by the Cubs and reaching the big leagues. 2000 and 1967 are also the two best drafts for sheer number of big leaguers produced, with 10 each. Excluding recent drafts for which comparison is relatively meaningless, the worst draft was 1988 where only two of 45 players drafted by Jim Frey were signed by the Cubs and eventually made the big leagues, and neither Jessie Hollins nor Kevin Roberson can be considered a significant major league player. The number of players who were drafted and signed by the Cubs and reached the major leagues is shown below for each draft. Despite a half-century of mostly mediocre teams, the Cubs have produced a fair amount of major league talent, although without completing a similar analysis of all other major league teams the achievements of the Cubs in the draft cannot be put into proper context. Nevertheless, the following is an All-Star roster of those players drafted and signed by the Cubs who played in the major leagues. Some players may not have played in the big leagues for the Cubs, but they began they were drafted and signed by the Cubs and began their careers in the their farm system. • 2020 International League Field Managers Eight Il Clubs to Be Led by New Skippers This Season
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE February 11, 2020 2020 INTERNATIONAL LEAGUE FIELD MANAGERS EIGHT IL CLUBS TO BE LED BY NEW SKIPPERS THIS SEASON When the International League's 137th season opens on April 9, eight of the circuit’s fourteen teams will have a new manager leading the quest to capture the coveted Governors’ Cup trophy. Only six managers return from the 2019 season, although several of the League’s new field generals bring pre-existing ties to their teams and communities. It is the first time since 2006 that more than half of the circuit’s clubs changed managers during an offseason. The reining IL Manager of the Year Damon Berryhill is the International League’s longest- tenured manager, preparing to begin his fourth season at the helm of the Gwinnett Stripers. Also hoping to get his team back to the postseason is Brady Williams, who took Durham to the finals in his first year with the Bulls in 2019. They will be challenged in the South Division by another returning manager in Norfolk, Gary Kendall. The 2018 IL Manager of the Year, Lehigh Valley’s Gary Jones, will lead the IronPigs once again this season. Like Jones, Brian Esposito in Indianapolis is also at the helm for the third straight campaign. IL Hall of Famer Billy McMillon will manage the Red Sox for the franchise’s final season at McCoy Stadium in Pawtucket. Two men have found themselves moving from a coach’s role to the manager’s chair in 2020. Pennsylvania-native Doug Davis (former Syracuse manager) takes over in Scranton/Wilkes- Barre after three seasons coaching, while in Columbus, Ohio-native Andy Tracy is the new manager after helping lead the Clippers to the 2019 Governors’ Cup title as hitting coach.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL WEEKLY NOTES FRIDAY, JULY 28, 2017 BLACKMON WORKING TOWARD HISTORIC SEASON On Sunday afternoon against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Coors Field, Colorado Rockies All-Star outfi elder Charlie Blackmon went 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored and his 24th home run of the season. With the round-tripper, Blackmon recorded his 57th extra-base hit on the season, which include 20 doubles, 13 triples and his aforementioned 24 home runs. Pacing the Majors in triples, Blackmon trails only his teammate, All-Star Nolan Arenado for the most extra-base hits (60) in the Majors. Blackmon is looking to become the fi rst Major League player to log at least 20 doubles, 20 triples and 20 home runs in a single season since Curtis Granderson (38-23-23) and Jimmy Rollins (38-20-30) both accomplished the feat during the 2007 season. Since 1901, there have only been seven 20-20-20 players, including Granderson, Rollins, Hall of Famers George Brett (1979) and Willie Mays (1957), Jeff Heath (1941), Hall of Famer Jim Bottomley (1928) and Frank Schulte, who did so during his MVP-winning 1911 season. Charlie would become the fi rst Rockies player in franchise history to post such a season. If the season were to end today, Blackmon’s extra-base hit line (20-13-24) has only been replicated by 34 diff erent players in MLB history with Rollins’ 2007 season being the most recent. It is the fi rst stat line of its kind in Rockies franchise history. Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig is the only player in history to post such a line in four seasons (1927-28, 30-31).

Charlie Manuel has become part of their group. When the Phillies beat the Colorado Rockies at the end of July, Manuel became the fourth manager in Phillies history to lead the club to 500 wins. In so doing, Manuel joined Gene Mauch (646 wins), Harry Wright (636), and Danny Ozark (594) as Phillies skippers who have won 500 or more games. Manuel achieved his lofty status faster than the other three. He did it midway through his sixth season, just 16 days before Ozark won his 500th. Mauch, the Phillies' skipper from 1960-68, reached the milestone in his seventh season, while Wright (1884-93), managing in seasons when the schedules were considerably shorter, took nine years to get there. Now 66 and the oldest manager in team history, Manuel has led the Phillies to levels none of the other three ever did. His Phillies have gone to the World Series twice, and he is the only manager whose teams have posted 85 or more wins five straight years.
