Summary of the July 28th Meeting

We were personally greeted for the Club's 4801st meeting by the Past Presidents Committee. Included in the reception line were Gary Giannini, current Chair, and among others, Don Richardson ('85), Phil Sims, Ray Silva, Mel Matsushima and, Ron Diridon, Sr. Missed in the line the Hon. Bob Kieve but then we noted Bob was in animated discussion with retiring Police Chief Rob Davis and Frank Biehl and wondered if one of those great Kieve editorials might ensue from the confab. Their discussion reminded me that one of the best things about the club is talking with good people.

After the 2 minute warning, President Larry asked for order and then welcomed fellow Rotarians and guests.

Larry next called us to sing God Bless America with the lead voice of Ray Silva and the piano of Paul Tumason.

Our "Wisdom for the Day" was presented by Norm Hulberg. Norm thought it was authored by former DA, Geo. Kennedy but discovered it was from Confucius: "There is no greater cowardice than to know right and then fail to do it." This was another short and solid effort which seemed much appreciated by members.

Next was "Here's Johnny": news and humor from John McLeod. The News: DOW down; controversial provisions of Arizona immigration statute enjoined; trial judge "---speedy verdict in Blago's case unlikely"; MLB may contribute to special election cost if City backs off planned ballot measure. The humor: ATT to issue iPhone app so calls can be made/received; Psychotic believes 2+2=5, neurotic knows 2+2=4, but worries about it!

Larry next requested that in the future to save time Club members should simply state their names and introduce their guests.

Red Badgers Jeffrey Smith (County Executive) and Shishir Doctor (an EE), introduced themselves and served as holders of the travelling microphones for Rotarians with guests and visiting Rotarians.

Some of our fellow Rotarians with guests included Kathy Wiley. Mark Walker, Rod Diridon, Sr., Stan Mancini, David Ginsborg, Dennis Fong, Don Gagliardi, Bob Hartley, Shirley Lewis, Amari Romero-Thomas, and the not-height challenged, Susan Fitts.

Maggie Wilhelm introduced new member, Geri Wong, a Senior V-P with Cornish & Carey, Commercial. President Larry next asked Greg Yoder to discuss the important September 8th PolioPlus challenge. After the extraordinary gift from the Gates Foundation our Club and our colleagues in other clubs will be seeking to make matching additions. The Gates contribution is roughly $300 per Rotary member throughout the world! Over the next 40 days led by Greg and Linda Gold expect a call or e-mail to contribute.

Greg who also chairs the Red Badge Committee then introduced Red Badger Darcie Green to give an update on the EHC Life Builders landscaping work at the Boccardo Center which was this year's Red Badge project. After some difficulty getting the A/V to function (during which the witty Dennis Wilcox noted to our table ---"we here have a strong silent message") we saw the hard work undertaken by our new members. JOB WELL DONE!

David Cohen spoke about the value of advertising in the Club's 2011 Directory but only after doing a "first reader survey" of our members' use of it. The survey using the finest media methodology was by show of hands which Mr. Cohen using the most advanced scientific methods immediately interpreted as above 95%. Advertising is limited to members only and rates were quite reasonable. The purpose of this effort is meet production costs.

Larry called attention to the physical layout in our lobby. This new set up was approved by the Board to provide a more pleasant and less congested entry way and expedite check-in.

President Larry then mentioned our next two speakers: 8/4: Toni Wise/Peter Carter (Rotary Personals) don't miss it, and 8/11: Dan Gordon co-founder of Gordon Biersch Brewing Company, the director of brewing operations who also supervises the company's state-of-the-art brewing and bottling facility in San Jose. It was rumored that product samples will be available.

Don Gagliardi introduced the program, a talk by Earthquake Goalkeeper Joe Cannon. Mr. Cannon is among the career leaders in every category for goalkeepers, including wins and shutouts (clean sheets) and in 2001 he backstopped San Jose to the MLS Cup championship - America's soccer Super Bowl Born in Sun Valley, Idaho. Joe grew up in what he describes as the "mean streets" of Los Altos Hills. He began his soccer career in the Mountain View-Los Altos soccer club going on to be a star player for St Francis High School. He played three years for Santa Clara University where he was named a 1997 All-American. In 2008, Joe received the Earthquakes Humanitarian Award as well as the Bedard Award from the fans as the team's most community- oriented player for his work with autistic children. Joe is a former teammate of U.S. national team star, and world-famous English star, David Beckham.

Joe pleasantly addressed with insight and humor life, community, sharing, soccer, the Earthquakes, their new stadium and brief comment on the recent World Cup in South Africa. His off-the-cuff talk was quite good and a change of pace that seemed most refreshing and sincere. Some of his observations:

Advice from his Dad: You can't choose your father, but your father-in-law is your fault!

Life is a collection of memories and we live in the moment that gives them birth. It's important that we savor both.

Sports allow lessons of joy and defeat to be learned without great expense. They encompass not only a pleasant thing to do, to enjoy, but involve a place or places where a joining of like-minded fans can coalesce as a face-to-face community. In turn community builds friends and connections. The Earthquakes understand that community is at the root of success here. Therefore, the organization seeks to reach-out beyond the sport to the community as a whole to build a large and sustainable fan base; and to help the community in its needs. The Earthquakes are committed to stay in and with the community. The stadium for the Earthquakes is illustrative of that commitment; and it will be first-class.

Soccer is indeed a beautiful game: its pace, space, finesse, worldwide appeal, and international stars. Success requires time; and that includes success of the USA in the World Cup competition. Success is achieved when everything is first-class. Landon Donovan is a friend; David Beckham a good family man. MSL should be the technological leader in the sport whether by play-by-play, replay (particularly in reference to goal scoring and off-sides). The shape of the ball at the Cup seemed to have more negatives than positives; and while increased scoring is not for Joe an issue adjustments in the definition of "off sides" and other rules might make the game better for new fans.

I'm My Own Grandpa

Jacksonville, FLA: - Marriage has put many a man in a terrible fix, but no one more so than Fred L. Mundae who married [a] pretty widow recently.

Mr. Mundae's father fell solidly in love with and married the widow's daughter.

The Mundae family in digging out their relationship discovered that young Mundae's father is now his son-in-law and his stepdaughter was his stepmother.

His step-daughter and his stepmother had a son recently. The baby was Mr. Mundae's brother and at the same time his grandchild.

His wife was his mother's mother. She was the mother of his stepdaughter who became his stepmother by marrying his father.

His wife was also his grandmother, but he also had to be his wife's husband. He was her grandchild and she was his grandmother.

This is how Fred L. Mundae became his own grandfather.

End Polio Now

Your contribution will help Rotary raise $200 million to match $355 million in challenge grants received from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The resulting $555 million will directly support immunization campaigns in developing countries, where polio continues to infect and paralyze children, robbing them of their futures and compounding the hardships faced by their families.

As long as polio threatens even one child anywhere in the world, children everywhere remain at risk. The stakes are that high. By donating now, you can help Rotary achieve a polio-free world.

You can down load the End Polio Now bimonthly news letter by Clicking On This Link. This is a separate download. It was updated July 2010.

The bottom line is this: As long as polio threatens even one child anywhere in the world, all children – wherever they live – remain at risk. You can track progress on the internet at this link.

The Four Way Test

Over 1.2 million Rotarians can't be wrong! In all the things we say and do . . .

Is it the TRUTH? Is it FAIR to all? Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
