English Language Classes for the Partners of Students

The University of offer English Language Classes to the partners of international students, staff, academic visitors or sponsored researchers.

The classes are organised into two 10 week semesters. There are two sessions each week and the classes are 2 hours long. We currently offer different level classes, ranging from beginner to intermediate level. The classes are mixed groups of men and women. The class tutor carries out a brief assessment initially to place new students into the appropriate class. Sometimes there is high demand for the classes, so it is necessary to operate a waiting list until places become available for new students.

There are no childcare facilities at the classes, so students with children should make their own childcare arrangements.

We also hold coffee mornings linked to the language classes and run a free to a local attraction at the end of each 10 week semester.

The coffee mornings are held at the University Staff Club twice in each 10 week semester on a Wednesday. Venue details and times will be confirmed nearer to the time.

Application and Registration Fee Application forms for classes are available from the International Office. For further information please contact Ruth Fox in the International Office, telephone 0115 95 15157 or email [email protected]

When you hand in your application form at the International Office, you will also be required to pay the £20 registration fee in cash. If you are not offered a place on the course, this fee will be fully refunded. In the event that a participant stops attending the classes, the fee will not be refunded.

Local Colleges

Most local colleges offering English language classes charge a fee for their programmes. The amount will depend on the level of the class and how long the course will run. Each college has a range of classes for different levels of spoken and written English. Some courses may lead to examinations and language certificates or an ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) qualification.

Classes normally start at the beginning of the academic year in September, although short course are sometimes run by term. For further details contact individual colleges.
