Tough-as-nails defenseman , was born on March 7, 1966, in Smith Falls, Ontario. He was originally drafted by the in the first round (14th overall) of the 1984 NHL Draft as a physical two-way defenseman for the in the . Acquired by the Flyers in a July 1988 trade with the for and a 1989 third-round pick (John Tanner), Carkner spent five full seasons with the Flyers.

Carkner provided size, toughness and some puck-moving ability. During his time in Philly, Carkner had two seasons with 30-plus points, including an 11- , 43-point campaign in 1988-89; his first year with the team. The Flyers came within two wins of reaching the Stanley Cup Final in the 1989 playoffs.

Carkner spent two seasons with the Red Wings, followed by four with the . The player finished his NHL career with 858 regular season games played, 42 goals, 252 points, and 1,588 penalty minutes. For the Flyers portion of his career, he dressed in 376 regular season games (plus 19 playoff games in 1989), notching 29 goals, 132 points and 867 penalty minutes.

Carkner is a regular participant in games with the Flyers Alumni Team. He has coached the Villanova University hockey team as well as a youth hockey team near his home in Chester County, PA. (Source: nhl.com)
