JAS-17003_2017-Annual-Report_171114-FINAL.indd 2 11/14/17 3:40 PM Our mission is to create and promote Japanese and American friendships. We do this through business, social, educational and cultural activities. We are the only organization in Chicago that touches all of these areas in American and Japanese relationships.

The Japan America Society of Chicago is a nonprofit association made up of individuals and corporations interested in United States-Japan business, cultural, political and social relations. Founded in 1930 to foster mutual goodwill and friendship between the people of Japan and the United States, the Society enjoys a total membership of over 150 American and Japanese corporations and over 600 individuals throughout Chicagoland and the Midwest. The Society sponsors over 50 public affairs and cultural programs annually, including business luncheons, evening lectures, cultural events and social/networking opportunities. All members receive discounts on program registration and invitations to special members-only events. The Society also has a Young Professionals Committee that organizes various evening lectures and social outings throughout the year for members in their 20s and 30s. In addition, the Society offers over six levels of Japanese and English language courses. For membership information and other inquiries, visit www.jaschicago.org or contact the Society office.

JAS-17003_2017-Annual-Report_171114-FINAL.indd 3 11/14/17 3:40 PM LETTER FROM THE HONORARY CHAIRMAN

November 2017

Dear friends,

Since I assumed my post here in February, the Japan America Society of Chicago has demonstrated its continuous commitment through a series of high-profile activities. You brought speakers such as Glen Fukushima of the Center for American Progress to give us further insight into U.S.- Japan relations. The NAJAS/KKC Business Speaker Series featured standout lecturers including Kazuo Sako, president and CEO of TOTO Americas Holdings & TOTO USA, Inc. At the 87th Anniversary Celebration Dinner, which was attended by Governor Bruce Rauner, guests heard a keynote address by Nobel laureate Dr. Ei-ichi Negishi of Purdue University. And in September, you welcomed Tagajo High School students to Chicago for a special cultural exchange with students from Lane Tech College Prep High School as part of the TOMODACHI Initiative. It was an invaluable experience for these young people, who are the future of U.S.-Japan relations.

These events and others throughout the year have contributed to the furthering of our two-way friendship at every level: grassroots, business and so on. The Society’s excellent programming could not be accomplished without the direction of President David Johnson and Executive Vice Presidents Ken Hennessy, Katsuya Inubushi and Akira Koyasu. I also wish to applaud the tireless efforts of Chairman Emeritus Senator Adlai Stevenson, Chairman Michael Moskow, the officers and board members, and Mitsukuni Baba and his staff. You have my heartiest thanks.

This December 1st marks the 120th anniversary of the Consulate here in Chicago, and of our Chicago-Japan partnership. Using this opportunity, let’s build upon our strong foundation and collaborate, innovate and achieve even more in the next year.

Sincerely,

Naoki Ito Consul-General of Japan in Chicago

November 2017

Dear Society members,

I am delighted to report another year of important progress by the Japan America Society of Chicago. Your Society continued its tradition of outstanding programs, while building its membership rolls and broadening its financial support, all in support of its mission of promoting friendship and understanding between Japan and the United States.

The Society’s members and directors enthusiastically participated in over 40 programs this year, covering issues in business, public affairs, culture and education. With wide-ranging topics from the Asian Security Environment to the recovery in Tohoku to the ever-popular sake tasting, our programs and events were well received and supported.

We are pleased to report continued strong membership and recognize that our corporate and individual members are essential to our success. We are thankful for the generosity of our many company sponsors and were pleased to welcome a number of new sponsors this past year. The board of directors is strongly committed to our mission, and I am deeply appreciative of their many contributions to the Society. Each new class of incoming board members adds vigor to the Society, and we continue to attract excellent individuals who generously share their time and talents with the Society.

We remain committed to providing our members and the public at large with a wide variety of quality programs and events. With a dedicated and energized board, sound finances, loyal members, an excellent staff and the continuous support of the Consulate-General of Japan in Chicago as well as others, we are pleased to embark on the coming year with great optimism.

Thank you to our members for your generous support and to our directors and governors for your valuable service. The Society’s future is bright, and I look forward to working with all of you in the year ahead.

Sincerely,

Michael H. Moskow Chairman

November 2017

Dear Society members,

Congratulations to all members of the Japan America Society of Chicago (JASC) for another outstanding year. The year ending June 30, 2017 was our 86th year in existence, reminding us of our rich history covering many decades of service to our members. We thank you and all the friends of the Society for the incredible support we received again this past year. The purpose of the Japan America Society of Chicago is to promote friendship and understanding between Japan and the United States. Throughout the year, our business, public affairs, social, educational and cultural programming contributes to Japanese-American understanding and friendship. Your support of the Society furthers that important mission.

Programming is at the core of our activities in pursuit of our mission. Once again, we had a year of exciting and interesting programs, events and classes. Of the many programs, here are a few to note: Glen Fukushima, senior fellow, Center for American Progress, former deputy assistant U.S. trade representative for Japan and China, and former president, American Chamber of Commerce in Japan, discussed the Trump administration and U.S.-Japan Relations. Ichiro Sone of JETRO Chicago and Miyagi Prefecture representatives presented a Tohoku update titled "What is Being Done to Build a Positive Future." We held our third annual Japan Bowl at North Central College, where students demonstrated their knowledge of Japan. Kazuo Sako, president and CEO of TOTO USA, spoke on the subject of "Japanese Products in American Homes — TOTO’s Corporate Strategy in the U.S." Hiroyuki Ishige, chairman of JETRO, Keith Williams, CEO of Underwriters Laboratories and other distinguished speakers held a symposium on the Asia Pacific Economic Integration and the Role of the United States & Japan, co-sponsored with JETRO, Illinois Chamber of Commerce and JASC. We also held many Young Professionals Committee events, including wine tastings, movie nights and networking events. Of special note this year was the TOMODACHI Exchange Program, in which a group of high school students from Tagajo High School in Japan visited Chicago, stayed with JASC member families and attended a series of educational activities including a visit to Lane Tech College Prep High School. We were also honored to have Governor Bruce Rauner attend our annual anniversary celebratory dinner, at which board member and Nobel prize winner Ei-Ichi Negishi presented his personal history. For more information, a complete listing of this past year’s programs is included later in this annual report.

In addition to programs, the two other elements essential to our success are membership and development. Numerous member companies and individual members have provided direct financial support to our Society this past year, including many as event or program sponsors or annual sponsors. We thank each one of you. We also depend upon our individual and corporate members and thank you all so much. In recognition of this important support, we have listed our annual program underwriters, sponsors of individual programs, corporate members and donors in this report. We invite you to please note the organizations and individuals that have supported our Society. Their support is vital to our Society, and we are deeply grateful to them.

We also wish to specially recognize and thank some of the organizations that we work with continuously to develop, publicize and deliver our programming and other services to our members. The Consulate-General of Japan in Chicago, the Japan External Trade Organization, the Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Chicago, the Chicago Council on Global Affairs, and others are great partners to the Society. On behalf of our members, we can assure these key partners that we will strive to be supportive and cooperative, and assist them wherever we can.

It is important to acknowledge that we have an outstanding group of directors and governors who set the direction for the Society. Many of our directors are active on committees and volunteer much of their valuable time to support our mission. We are particularly grateful to The Honorable Michael Moskow, our chairman, to The Honorable Naoki Ito, Consul-General of Japan in Chicago and our honorary chairman, and to Senator Adlai Stevenson, our chairman emeritus. Their wisdom and counsel are invaluable.

JAS-17003_2017-Annual-Report_171114-FINAL.indd 6 11/14/17 3:40 PM LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT (CONTINUED)

And finally, the underlying key to our success comes from the efforts of our Japan America Society staff. Mitsukuni Baba, our executive director, has been with us since 2008; Erika Kono, director of logistics and administration, has been with us since 1997; and our most recent addition, Yuki Weisner, joined us in February 2016. This group quietly goes about their work, delivering great programs and service for our members, day in and day out. I personally want to thank them for their passion, talent and hard work.

We are very enthusiastic about the year ahead and our opportunity to continuously improve the quality and relevance of programming that we bring to our members. We welcome your ideas and suggestions as well as your support, both in your attendance and participation as well as in your financial contributions. The Society’s financial status continues to be very stable, but we do not have a significant endowment or reserve fund to draw upon — so we depend on you, our members, to continue your generous support of our Society. Our goal is to continue to deliver excellent programs and great member value in a financially responsible manner. With your help, we intend to achieve that goal, and we look forward to a highly productive and meaningful year.

Thank you again to all who have supported us so well. I am very excited about our future and very much look forward to working with you and serving you in the year ahead.

Sincerely,

David D. Johnson President

LEGACY SOCIETY

PLANNING YOUR ESTATE AND SUPPORTING THE JAPAN AMERICA SOCIETY OF CHICAGO In increasing numbers, members and friends of the Society are creating legacies with us through planned gifts made during their lifetimes and through their estates. Gift planning integrates charitable giving into a donor’s overall financial, tax and estate planning to maximize benefits for both the donor and the Society. Examples of planned gifts include bequests, life- income gifts, gifts of real estate and gifts of retirement plan assets. The Society has been named in a number of planned gifts, and this will provide crucial support toward the future health and well being of the Society.
