1 Inventory to the Joseph Charles Philpot Sermon Collection AR 850 J. C. Philpot By: Mitchell Cole Southern Baptist Historical Library and Archives Nashville, Tennessee July, 2010 2 Inventory to the Joseph Charles Philpot Sermon Collection AR 850 Summary Main Entry: Joseph Charles Philpot Sermon Collection Date Span: 1841-1868 Abstract: The sermons of Joseph Charles Philpot, pastor of Strict and Particular congregations in Oxfordshire, England, in pamphlet form. Size: .5 linear ft. (1 document box) Collection #: AR 850 Biographical Sketch Joseph Charles Philpot was born in 1802 at Ripple in Kent, England. In 1827, he was elected a fellow at Worcester College, Oxford. He pursued a career in the ministry, with the Church of England, serving a parish in Stadhampton, Oxfordshire. In 1832, he was baptized by John Warburton. He renounced his affiliation with the Anglican Church three years later, earning him the moniker “The Seceder,” and served Strict and Particular congregations in Allington, Oakham, and Stamford for the rest of his life. He also took over William Gadsby’s position as editor of the Gospel Standard for twenty years. Philpot frequently denounced John Wesley’s Methodism and Arminianism in his works. He died in 1869, but his works continued to be published. Scope and Content Note The J. C. Philpot Sermon Collection (.5 linear ft.) contains thirty-one printed sermons preached in several churches across England. The sermons were mostly given to his congregations in Stamford, Allington, and Oakham; however, a few were delivered to churches in and around London. All were delivered after Philpot left the Anglican Church – the earliest dates to 1841 and the latest to 1868, a year before his death. Their specific subject matter varies widely, but all espouse the fundamental tenets of Strict Baptist and Calvinist doctrine. These sermons are reprints dating from the 1960’s and 1970’s. Arrangement The collection is arranged in alphabetical order by folder title. Provenance This is an artificial collection put together by the staff of the SBHLA. Most of the sermons came through the purchase of the Christian Baptist Library, Atwood, Tennessee. 3 Preferred Citation Joseph Charles Philpot Sermon Collection, Southern Baptist Historical Library and Archives, Nashville, Tennessee.
