What is your religious community? How long have you belonged to it? Sisters of St. Francis, of Clinton Iowa. I have belonged to this order for more than 56 years.

What drew you to joining this Community? The fact that they loved children, and I love children. They have helped countless children before and since I have belonged to the order.

Looking back, was deciding to serve God in a religious community a good decision? Yes, definitely, although there have been times that I have questioned this decision, until I came to St. Margaret Mary. This Parish has been my home and is responsible for my faith development, because of the kindness of the people of this parish.

Interview with Fr. Gene

What is your religious community? How long have you belonged to it?

My Religious Community is “Sons of Mary, Mother of Mercy” (SMMM). The Order was founded in 1970 by late Anthony G. Nwedo. The Sons of Mary, Mother of Mercy is the first indigenous Religious Order founded in Africa by an African bishop. The Order has a total of 252 professed members, 15 , 10 Novices, 83 Semi- narians, 6 brothers and 163 priests.

I have been a member of Sons of Mary, Mother of Mercy for 28 years. Wow!

What drew you to joining this Community?

In my hometown, the first 10 priests are Spiritians priests of the Holy Ghost. As I was growing up, I saw these priests as “another Christ,” role models whose lives are worthy of emulation and I said to myself, should I become a priest, I would like to be like them. The Father founder of my Order was a Holy Ghost Father, so the love I have for the Spiritians drew me to Sons of Mary.

Looking back, was deciding to serve God in a religious community a good decision?

Serving God in a religious community is a right decision. No one takes this honor upon himself, but a special call from God (Heb. 5:4). In religious community a life of union with Christ and deep devotion to the Blessed Mother are the ultimate. I am so blessed to be one of the pioneer members of this order. Mary, Mother of Mercy, pray for us!
