Little Godstowe Refurbishment Little Godstowe, a termly nursery for boys and girls aged 3-4, has undergone further revamps this winter. As well as a complete refurbishment inside, which took place last summer, the nursery has now welcomed brand new outside play areas. New surfaces have been laid, including an astro-turf with a “racetrack” for cycling around. Located within the grounds of the school and next door to the Pre-Prep building, the nursery is bright, airy and spacious. Four qualified and highly experienced nursery staff create a happy, stimulating and secure environment for your child to develop socially, emotionally, physically and intellectually. Nearly all of the nursery pupils stay on to join the pre-prep, which is also for boys and girls. The Main School, from Year 3, caters for girls only. Little Godstowe’s next Open Day is on Saturday 25th February, from 10am – 1pm. Please contact Mrs Cathy Gainer, the Registrar, on [email protected] or 01494 429006 for more information.

New car seat rules Changes to the law mean that from 1st March 2017, newly designed booster seats will only be approved for children over 125cm tall or 22-36kg. They are to be brought in after the United Nations warned booster seats without backs are not safe for smaller children as they do not provide protection in side-impact collisions. The changes will only apply to new backless seats and not to ones already on the market that meet current safety standards. Parents can continue to use their existing booster seats after the rule change. However, the new regulation is designed to increase safety and your child will be safer in a high-backed booster seat. Heatherton House Nursery Move-A-Mile A Day The children from Heatherton House Nursery in Amersham proved how active they are when they recently took part in a whole school Move-A- Mile-A-Day challenge. The enthusiastic girls and boys were very proud that only two weeks into the challenge, they had managed to move over 40 miles as a group. Nursery were particularly creative in the ways they ‘moved’, with children running, walking, skipping, bouncing, riding trikes and pushing babies in pushchairs to make up the miles. “It’s a great way to keep active and to learn more about keeping bodies healthy,” says Head of Early Years Vicki Bowden. “We are really proud of our Nursery’s great effort and achievement.” Heatherton House, Girls Independent Day Prep School in Amersham with Co-educational Nursery is holding Open Mornings on Friday 3rd & Saturday 4th March, 10am-12noon. Getting involved in British Science Week (10th to 19th March) is easy Make your own thermometer to do and you can get involved in Experiment with temperature reactions with a homemade many different ways. Numbermix is thermometer. This experiment is suitable for Key Stage 2 children an Amersham-based Social Enterprise (7–11 years old). that runs projects to raise attainment and engagement in maths and science What you need: through fascinating hands-on activities. • Modelling clay/blue tack Many experiments can be done • 1 small clear drinks bottle • Water using basic materials you have around (500ml) • Food colouring the house, under adult supervision of • 1 straw • Rubbing alcohol (optional course! Here are a few examples: • 1 bowl but improves performance)

Instructions: Mix 50ml water with 50ml rubbing alcohol and a few drops of food colouring, (if you don’t have rubbing alcohol you can use 100ml of water but the thermometer will not be as sensitive). Pour the mixture into the bottle and add a straw (DO NOT DRINK). Now place modelling clay between the straw and the neck of the bottle to create a seal. This should stop air from getting into the bottle. * Make sure there are no gaps as if there are any air pockets it won’t work. Congratulations! Your thermometer is complete! Now let’s test it. Place your new thermometer in a bowl, pour hot water slowly into the bowl, and see what happens to the water level inside the straw. AWARD-WINNING The Science Why does this happen? Liquids contract and expand depending on the temperature. When a liquid is heated up, it expands, and since the bottle is sealed, the only place for the liquid to go as it expands is up the straw.

What next? Have your child become the local weather-person and report on the temperature in varying locations around the house. Try warming the thermometer using your hands rather than water and look at the change in temperature. Take it outside and place it in the sunlight and in the shade and see how the temperature reacts. Challenge your child to find/create a temperature that makes the liquid reach a certain spot on the bottle. Ice cubes, hot water, shade and sun are all resources that could be used.
