Introduction To an unfamiliar reader the work of Dante Alighieri (1265-1321) and Samuel Beckett (1906-1989) may appear to contrast; wherein Dante’s Comedy there is no room for salvation, in Beckett one is confronted with seemingly unprogressive dialogues (see En Attendant Godot, Endgame). There is a common interest that both authors shared – namely, to become a better author than their literary idol, to whom they looked upon as an expert in the craft. For Dante, this author was Virgil1, and his Comedy may be taken as his improved version of The Aeneid. For Beckett, Dante was his source of inspiration ever since he studied the Comedy at University (Ferrini 13)2. Another similarity between Dante and Beckett/the authors is the presence of pairs3 that can be found in the Comedy as/and the trilogy (as some minor studies have touched upon, see Carrière, Caselli). Some scholars (Caselli, Haughton) have noted Beckett’s ability to adapt ‘Dantean elements’ or characters such as Belacqua4 and appropriate them into his writing. Therefore, this thesis approaches the topic from the perspective of Beckett and aligns with Dante to discover if any patterns or similar developments can be discerned in the usage of the couple in the selected works: Dante’s Comedy (1307-1321) and Beckett’s trilogy – Molloy (1951), Malone Dies (1951), The Unnamable (1953). The selected works were chosen because they share a common denominator: both consist of three parts that belong together and combined form a unit. If one were to follow this thought, one might perceive the epic as a sort of trilogy, despite the difference in their format types (Beckett’s are novels whereas Alighieri’s is a three-part epic)5. This thesis aims to produce an overview of the concept of the couple in Dante’s Comedy and Beckett’s trilogy through textual analysis. In doing so, it uses Daniela Caselli’s Beckett’s Dantes (2005) as a case study and for its intertextual framework.6 Dante Alighieri & The Divine Comedy Dante may be the only author that is better known by his first name than his last name. His popularity has continued through the centuries7. The Divine Comedy can be, and has long been, considered as a representative embodiment of authority in the European tradition. This course, instead, asks whether Dante’s “masterpiece” could also offer breaches in which the ideal Western subject cracks open and shows its problematic constitution in a never fully accomplished process of formation. By looking at figurations of desire, bodily performances, temporal entanglements, negotiations of authorship, and multicultural sources, the Divine Comedy may become much less monolithic — and Dante a less dogmatic figure — and offer a space for discussion in which contemporary readers can conjoin their diverse perspectives, interests, and experiences. In this course, students will closely explore a selection of canti from the Divine Comedy (in English translation) in their historical context and the multifaceted picture of the medieval world(s) that they present to the reader. In fact, the theme and characterization as well as staging and dialogue are quite Beckettian, that is to say typical. And it also shares affinities with the other major productions of the Theater of the Absurd. Yet, the reason for its dominance over half a century is the same typical qualities which are however highlighted in this play perhaps more significantly than the others, the same qualities which make Krapp the archetypal figure of Beckett’s version of the Theater of the Absurd. An archetypal figure, Krapp serves as a pattern for all major Beckettian characters. “A wearish old man”, we read in the first paragraph of the play, “very near-sighted” and “hard of hearing” ( Krapp , 1989: 55). Therefore he has some physical defects like other characters in Beckett’s drama. He also has problem with his constipation as his name implies. Didi has problem with his kidneys and Gogo with his boots. Hamm is blind; Pozzo also becomes blind in a scene. Lucky is numb. Nag and Nell are legless and kept in dustbins.

Concerned with ―Purgatory‖ in particular, Beckett was fascinated with Dante‘s Belacqua, a character Dante encounters in Ante-purgatory where the souls wait for a lifetime in order to begin their journey of purgation. Belacqua is portrayed by Dante as a slothful figure who is not much interested in purging his soul and seems quite content with his lethargic state. While for Dante, Belacqua is a pitiful soul, an epitome of sloth, and a negative example for humankind; for Beckett, he is the ultimate representative of the modern man who has lost his purpose in life and his will to make sense of the world he occupies. In Beckett‘s novels, then, Dante‘s Belacqua is transformed from an exemplary character serving for a moral message into an ‗everyman‘ figure reflecting the existential predicament of the twentieth- century individual. Dante‘s Belacqua, in this sense, constitutes the gist of Beckett‘s outsider protagonists who are depicted as aimless and indifferent wanderers. Therefore, these characters are portrayed as merely different versions of Belacqua. In this light, this article purposes to discuss how Beckett adapts Dante‘s Belacqua to the twentieth-century context and revives him as the epitome of the modern everyman who suffers from an existential plight, and how Beckett‘s oeuvre is, indeed, shaped by this very character.
