8 2010 Season Preview:

The 2010 Warrior Squad returns a solid core of sophomores and an excellent group of freshman. Depth and versatility will be this team’s greatest strengths. Lots of guys can move around and play multiple positions which should create a ton of competition for playing time.

Pitching: This should be one of our biggest strong suits this season. We have four players returning that all saw significant last year. Right-handers Richie Carmichael and Austin Pentecost, and left- handers Jake Nelson and Travis Ruffin were all major contributors last season. Carmichael participated in the Sophomore Showcase this fall and will be counted on heavily as a starter again this season and in the middle infield. We hope to use the hard-throwing Pentecost, who was mainly a reliever last season, in the rotation this year where his velocity and his slider should get plenty of attention. Crafty lefty Nelson will be counted on to eat up plenty of innings again this year in either a starting or middle-relief role while Ruffin is still recovering from a serious hamstring issue that he had in the fall. When healthy, he is very deceptive and has excellent control. Red-shirt freshman right-hander Nick Jordan will bring another power arm into the mix while red-shirt left-hander Colton Richards was one of our most improved players in the fall. His control has improved immensely and we look for big things out of him this season. Transferring from Lewis-Clark State and Skagit Valley College is Brett Watson. Watson is a big, strong left-hander who will help us right away. He has a live-arm and figures to contribute to the rotation in a large way. Freshman Trevor Byers, another left-hander, will add some quality innings to our staff as well. We have eight freshmen right-handers on the staff that will all be given a chance to earn considerable time. Three two-way players, Alex Bonczyk, Tyler Roberts, and Justin Windsor should play major roles both offensively and on the mound. Matt Staudenmaier, son of former Warrior Baseball player and coach and current Warrior Softball coach Mike Staudenmaier, had an excellent fall. He has a ton of movement and pinpoint control and should fight for quality innings. We look for a huge season out of Matt. Anthony Garza, Josh Yundt, Brett Lambert and Christian Jacobsen round out the staff and all of them figure to be contributors to the program this year. Garza and Yundt are both big bodied guys that have good control and have a chance to throw hard through continued work. Lambert is a bit raw but has a huge amount of potential. Jacobsen is our lone side-arm guy and should get outs with good sink/slider action.

Catching: We will be completely new behind the dish this season but that doesn’t mean we won’t be talented. Kyle Sani seems to have taken the lead here after having a very good fall. He is a very strong kid and a hard-worker. His outstanding arm should help our pitching staff in preventing the opposing teams from having any kind of running game while we expect his bat to be somewhere in the middle of the line- up. He has a chance to be one of the better catching prospects to come out of WWCC in quite a while. Sean McNaghten and Taylor McDonald are both pushing each other for playing time. McNaghten had an elbow injury in the fall but seems to be progressing nicely. He also has a strong arm when healthy and his bat is coming around after taking a year off. The only sophomore , McDonald is one of the hardest working and most improved players on the team. He has come a long way through shear desire and work ethic. The wildcard of the group is a transfer from Lewis-Clark State, Jacob Prow. Prow is one of the most talented players on the team, but must resolve some off the field issues before he can have an impact on the field. Once he does we could have one of the best catching units in the NWAACC.

First Base: Riley Merrill is the leading candidate right now for 1B. He played in the Sophomore Showcase and had a solid fall swinging the bat but must continue to get better around the bag. He has

9 the ability to hit somewhere in the middle of the lineup and drive in a bunch of runs. Marc Garza and Jacob Keyes are developing nicely over at 1B as well and each have a chance to earn playing time here.

Second base/Shortstop: These positions will be a fight for playing time right up until we start our league games at the end of March. They will ultimately be decided by the guys who are the most consistent both offensively and defensively. Anthony Nice hit as well as anybody in the fall and can play either position. He has the arm strength for SS but must continue to improve his footwork. He is a guy who could have a great season this year. Richie Carmichael is another leading candidate up the middle. After being a pitcher only last year, he had a good summer and fall being a two-way guy. He is a very athletic infielder with good hands and a strong arm. Jake Anderson is another kid who has improved immensely. He may have some of the best bat speed on the team. He is more of a only, but once he improves around the bag at 2B he could earn a bunch of PT. He can also play in the OF if needed. Taylor Forge is probably our best defensive second baseman. He turns a good double-play and knows how to play the position. With some added strength, it will come down to how well he hits to earn playing time. Marc Garza and Jacob Keyes are two freshmen who are pushing for playing time as well. Marc is one of the best athletes on the team. He can play SS, 3B, and 1B as well as play in the outfield. He is a big, strong kid with some good pop in his bat and an excellent arm. It will be nice to have a guy like him that we can move around the field. He will play somewhere if he hits. Jacob is another very good athlete and has a chance to be a very successful player once he can become more consistent. Saul Martinez has made steady improvement this year. He has got- ten stronger with his work in the weight room and this has helped improve his footwork at 2B and his arm.

Third base: This is another position with no real leading candidate at the moment. Glen Reser is our only left-handed hitter and has started to learn how to be a quality college hitter. He also has a good glove but needs to improve his throwing before he can take this position over. Justin Windsor is one of our two-way guys who will make a difference on the mound and in the field. In the fall, his was his strongest as- set but he has made some big strides with his swing over the winter. He is a strong, athletic kid who works very hard. Marc Garza will also be a factor at third base.

Outfield: We may have one of the fastest outfields in the East Region. A bunch of these guys can really scoot, the likes of which we haven’t seen in a complete outfield at WWCC in quite a while. Colby Melburn made some highlight reel plays in the fall. Once he learns to use the whole field on offense, he could have a great season. Seager Pence is back after sitting out last year and this fall with Tommy John surgery on his throwing elbow. His swing is better than it was before the injury, but his arm is still a month or so away. He is another guy with good bat speed and a lot of power in a small package. Alex Bonczyk is one of our two-way outfielders and he can really run. He had the fastest 60 yard time in the fall and has the arm to match. Tyler Roberts is our other two-way outfielder and is probably the most pure hitter on the team. He has a great knowledge of the strike zone and the ability to drive the ball to all fields. Outfield is a fairly new position for him but he hasn’t skipped a beat out there. Zane Hobart is another one of our burners. He is the prototypi- cal right fielder. Excellent speed, outstanding arm, and now his bat is starting to match. He worked extreme- ly hard over the winter with his swing and it shows. Brandon Renteria has made steady improvements and is one of our better defensive outfielders. He is a good contact hitter and uses the whole field. Devon Molitor is another guy who can really run and has come a long ways through the fall and winter. He is one of the hardest workers on the team and is making great strides at the plate. Tyler Porter is a relative newcomer to the program. He played football at the University of Puget Sound in the fall and transferred here over winter break. He is starting to get his baseball feel back and will be able use his athleticism to contribute.

On October 17, 2009 the Warrior Baseball Family welcomed back almost 40 former players and coaches to participate in the 2nd Annual Old Timers Alumni Game. The stands were packed with friends and family who witnessed two well played games, eventually won by the 2010 Warriors, 8-2 and 6-5. We are already looking forward to and planning next year’s Alumni Weekend and are hoping to see many more of the old players. The plan is to add more events to the weekend in the future including a Texas Hold’Em Poker Tournament.
