  • Mayweather's List: Porter and Brook Fighting to Get on It
Mayweather’s List: Porter and Brook fighting to get on it By Norm Frauenheim– Getting a shot at Floyd Mayweather Jr. has been called a derby and a sweepstakes. There are no rules on how to get in line, if in fact there is one. Still, Shawn Porter and Kell Brook will try to win a chance Saturday at StubHub Center in Carson, Calif. They’re fighting for Porter’s International Boxing Federation (IBF) version of the welterweight title. But the acronym- sanctioned belt is window dressing. The real fight is to get into the Mayweather conversation. Thus far, Porter’s name has been dropped, but a mere mention is a little bit like winning a state lottery. Not much chance there. With an impressive win over the unbeaten and dangerous Brook, however, maybe Porter will be more than just another name in a crowded pool of alternates after Mayweather begins searching for another opponent following an expected victory in a September rematch with Marcos Maidana. Porter (24-0-1, 15 KOs), a slight favorite to beat Brook (32-0, 22 KOs) in a Showtime-televised bout, acknowledges the Mayweather stakes, which are impossible to ignore anyway. “I don’t consider my fights as auditions,’’ he said in a conference call. “I consider them performances. Again, you know this is boxing. We don’t look ahead. But at the same time, yes, Mayweather, we all know he’s on the clock. We’re all right there, hoping we’re next in line.’’ The confident Porter is bold enough to exhibit showmanship.

  • Garcia and Guerrero Collide in Latino Showdown Live on Boxnation
GARCIA AND GUERRERO COLLIDE IN LATINO SHOWDOWN LIVE ON BOXNATION London (7 January) – An exciting Latino fistic explosion between warriors Danny Garcia and Robert Guerrero will be screened exclusively live on BoxNation on Saturday 23 January. Garcia, the former unified World Super-Lightweight Champion, and Guerrero, a former four weight World Champion, collide at the Staples Centre, Los Angeles, over twelve rounds in an expected thriller. The addition of Garcia v Guerrero adds to a red-hot January on the Channel of Champions alongside top live domestic and international action with British Featherweight Champion Ryan Walsh (22 January) and the return of fearsome Russian Sergey Kovalev (30 January). For the 31-fight unbeaten Garcia, of Puerto Rican decent, he’s taking the hard route to become a two-weight world champion by facing in only his second fight at welterweight, a hard and relentless adversary in Guerrero. The 27-year-old big-hitter from Philadelphia vacated his titles last year to make the move up and knocked out former WBA World Welterweight Champion Paulie Malignaggi in nine rounds and is now ready to trade blows with his rival. “Guerrero comes to fight, and he’s faced the best in the sport. This is a huge opportunity for me to show why I’m a star, and there’s no better place to do that than in Los Angeles, where stars are born.” Said Garcia. All-action Mexican-American Guerrero, holds the edge over Garcia in rounds and has extended former pound-for-pound great Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Keith Thurman in world title challenges.

  • Shawn Porter: It Is “Showtime!”
SHAWN PORTER: IT IS “SHOWTIME!” Shawn Porter is the current IBF Welterweight champion, and he is very aware the boxing community focuses the majority of their attention on the current Ring, WBA, WBC, and WBO Welterweight champions (Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao). “Showtime” Shawn Porter is putting in the work, and biding his time to make sure the world clearly knows - it is Shawn Porter’s time. It is “SHOWTIME!” At an early age, Kenny Porter gave his son the nickname “Showtime.” Kenny Porter got the name from Cleveland fighter Jeffery “Showtime” Stoudemire. Stoudemire left a lasting impression on a young Kenny Porter, who watched as Jeffery Stoudemire played the role of protector, shadow boxed, and willingly showed Kenny Porter boxing moves. Kenny Porter took an interest in boxing, and began going to the gym. His first coach, Clint Martin, was also Jeffery Stoudemire’s coach. Stoudemire would move on to become a National AAU champion and ready himself to turn pro, which allowed Kenny Porter to experience one of the most endearing moments in his young life: “I remember going to the gym and looking at this tall locker. Jeffery was the only person with his name on a locker and it said, “Showtime.” That just stayed with me as a little boy looking up to this big locker and this tall, strong, muscular guy who was a champion. When Shawn turned three or four years old, I started calling him Showtime!” At 24-0-1 (15 KO’s), “Showtime” Shawn Porter is coming off one of the most impressive title defenses in the history of boxing.
