Thousands of students encouraged to dream, dare and develop at Young Leaders Day in

Live a 3D life. That’s the challenge inspirational leaders put to the full house of more than 2,000 primary and intermediate students from 147 schools at the National Young Leaders Day (NYLD) – held at the Vodafone Events Centre in Manukau earlier today.

Students heard from Silver Fern and Northern Mystics player Laura Langman, athlete and Carabiner Mentoring Programme founder Cam Calkoen, adventurer and presenter of TV One’s First Crossings series Jamie Fitzgerald, chief executive of The Mind Lab Frances Valintine, and Attitude Programmes for Schools presenter Charlie Laumatia.

NYLD events this year challenge students to live a 3D life by dreaming, daring and developing their leadership potential.

“Just like a 3D movie bursts off the screen, a 3D life is so much better than a dull flat one,” NYLD manager Annette Fale says.

Page 1 of 4 “Dream what your life could be... then chase that dream. Dare to do the scary brave things that make life an adventure. Develop your strengths – there is more in you waiting to be discovered. No one gets a brilliant life without guts, vision and work,” students were told.

Frances Valintine was a driving force behind Media Design School. In 2013 she opened The Mind Lab in Newmarket – a facility dedicated to teaching robotics, electronics, programming, film making, animation and science technology to children from 4 to 15 years old.

Frances dared the young leaders to prepare for an ever-changing future.

“To prepare for the future, you need to open your mind – curiosity will be your greatest strength, not technology, not how well you can play Minecraft, but curiosity and discovery,” Frances said, as the students took notes in their notebooks.

“Wake up in the morning and ponder, how can I do things differently, how can I make things better?”

The day was not only motivational, but also entertaining. A performance by The Laughing Samoans, interactive games and 3D video clips were highlights of the day.

Since 2001, over 90,000 New Zealand students have attended a National Young Leaders Day. Events are held annually in Auckland, Wellington, Palmerston North, Rotorua, Christchurch and Dunedin.
