A Christmas Custom In and other Eastern European countries a bread is shared at the Christmas meal. The bread resembles the communion Host used in the Mass. This Christmas bread is called, “oplatek” (pronounced “opwatek”), which is the Polish word for “offering.”

After Christmas Masses at Holy Family each family is invited to take home oplatek. The bread is an offering from God which reminds us of the Holy ; it is an offering to God from us as a sign of our love for each other. The bread is given by the head of the family to others at the Christmas family dinner.

The oplatek, the Christmas wafer, reminds us that the Lord comes to be our food for eternal life. As Christians we share in this gift of God who became one of us. The breaking of the oplatek is a sign that our faith does not belong only in the church building but in our hearts and our homes. The wafer is blessed at Christmas Mass and then taken home.

Prayers to be used at Christmas dinner with the oplatek are provided. The oplatek is a gift from the parish to each family with wishes and prayers for a Blessed Christmas!
