He’s our MP and has every right to say what he thinks on a wide range of issues that are anywhere near his areas of responsibility, both as our MP and as his party’s critic for Foreign Affairs and NCC matters. I expect to hear from my elected representatives at every level, including our Community Association President, our Ward Councillor and our Provincial MPP. Just because they may have a strong opinion on a subject does not mean they can’t tell us what that is and why. Dewar’s so called ‘rants’ cannot be seen simplistically as ‘.. attacking another party...” particularly if that ‘other party’ is the government itself, ie. the Party in power. In that situation our MP’s comments on how our Government is doing are pertinent, whether I agree with them or not. And even if they were about some other Party’s position / performance / behavior, that’s fine with me : I support open discussion / communication more than the closed down ‘shut the f up’ type of approach in the relationship between a representative and their constituents. In this context, what our representative likes and doesn’t like about how the present government ( federal , provincial or municipal) is performing, are fair game in our democracy. If I really don’t like what he says or what he does,( as opposed to that he is saying it ), I’ll have my chance to express that at the polls. In the meantime, he’s ours, and we can assume he is trying to work FOR us. Our MP’s and Ward Councillors and OSCA President’s spaces in OSCAR, are not ‘free’ in that sense; they’re our elected representatives even if we did not all actually vote for each of them; we need to hear from him/ them all since we’ve elected them; they all have a special responsibility to us that others who ran against them (and lost) do not have.

A Bird came down the Walk

A Bird came down the Walk— He did not know I saw— He bit an angle-worm in halves And ate the fellow, raw,

And then he drank a Dew From a convenient Grass, And then hopped sidewise to the Wall To let a Beetle pass—

He glanced with rapid eyes That hurried all abroa— They looked like frightened Beads, I thought— He stirred his velvet head

Like one in danger, Cautious, I offered him a Crumb, And he unrolled his feathers And rowed him softer home—

Than Oars divide the Ocean, Too silver for a seam— Or Butterflies, off Banks of Noon, Leap, plashless as they swim.

By Abraham Plunkett- Latimer.

This month’s contribution to the Ottawa South History Project comes from one of our Heritage Survey 2009 summer students, Abraham Plunkett-Latimer, an M.A. student in the Department of History, Carleton University. This article will be part of the Heritage Survey 2009 report to be presented to the Old Ottawa South community later this year. Property Address: 834 Colonel By Drive (Plan 214 Lot 5 E Part lot 3.)

Suggestions for Future Study

Although we have been unable to find much information on the Jarmans’ art gallery, we suspect that there are advertisements of some sort in existence, either in magazines, newspapers, or flyer form. The gallery ran for many decades, so there is almost certainly material available. Further information may also be found on why the Morelands chose to subdivide their property, and how they intended the lots to develop. The Morelands were a prominent family in Ottawa and may have sources. We also hope to speak with the current owner of the home. He may have further information on the history of the house to flesh out its story, and more importantly he may give access to the interior which may be as well- preserved as the exterior, and may allow for further analysis of the home’s architecture. 834 Colonel By Drive detail of portico and brickwork Contact the Ottawa South History Project at HistoryProject@ When this home was built it would as well since there was no summer period which emphasized cleanliness, OldOttawaSouth.ca or visit us have been considered both modern kitchen), and very strongly reflects the simplicity, self-made middle class online at www.OldOttawaSouth.ca/ and fashionable. Squirrel Talk Vacation in Japan

e are back from a fantastic three week vacation in Japan. The country was very Wwelcoming, very safe and clean, and overwhelmingly full of sites to visit including many incredible UNESCO world heritage sites (http://whc. unesco.org/en/list . Have you seen some around the world ? some of the 15 protected sites in Canada ? ). We should note that we had some ethical issues in visiting Japan, as they are known to overfish massively and with little regard to nature, sustainability, or international law. Current controversy examples include fishing beautiful endangered whales (using a loophole in the law) including in protected areas (read more here for example http://www.seashepherd.org/ ) and the Blue Tuna (recent CITES meeting choosing not to protect the Blue Tuna even though they could be extinct by 2012. See David Suzuki’s list at http://goo. gl/wntr for which fish to eat for sustanability). A final concern was of course the amount of fuel spent to fly there ( 14 hours, one stop ) causing 5.5 tons of CO2 emission per person. We decided anyway to jump into the unknown mystical country and explore ! It was very exciting ! We compensated the carbon issues a tiny bit by travelling with an excellent 21 day train pass zooming around on superfast electric ShinKansen trains ( test runs up to 443 km/h ) and walking with backpacks. Nikko, Japan Late in the trip we found out that one or two bus hops help optimize travel when crossing mountain ranges. Michaël has always loved trains and so in Japan it was country. arriving perfectly on time (making travel very easy heaven. Walking was pleasant and healthy level to the venerable Mount Fuji at 3,776m. I must doesn’t seem to take much more time – in fact all and with the almost zero rate of theft and very high say my heart had a pang as we zipped by the volcano activities seem easy and on time. Another mystery safety we were never stressed except for the fact that Mount Fuji (last time erupted in 1707-1708) the first is moving in a metro with our packs cross current to opening a map up invariably caused someone to ask if time in a ShinKansen and we hit just the right angle hundreds of people, yet no one running into anyone we needed help and often led to a long but interesting and light. it was truly magnificent and perfect. This else. People take great care in letting each other pass conversation. Oddly, even though all Japanese learn theme of perfect comes up many times in Japan, from by, facilitated by lines in front of the metros with no English in school, most never use it as all business small gardens of a few square meters with perfectly one pushing or trying to cheat. It turned out we were is entirely in Japanese except to deal outside of the sculptured trees, to trains and busses leaving and there during the “golden week” which is the annual national japanese vacation, yet we never waited more than a few minutes nor did we feel crowded or rushed – there is a natural and pleasant flow. One item we enjoyed also was the fact busses and cars always slowed down and carefully avoided us even though we clearly made mistakes – after all it is all left side driving. They have mysterious methods to decide which side a bike goes on one of their large sidewalks. The rule appears to be the bike flows around people who walk, and cars wait for both to go by. Biking seems to be a major method of transporation so we eventually went biking in Kyoto ( $8 a day rental) and it was quite the experience, being a hot day and a hilly city, and almost no street names (thanks to the iPhone OffMaps application and built in GPS we did alright, with the help of one or two kind folks) and, thanks to some green-tea shaved-ice we cooled down nicely on a park bench with many other people at the golden temple there. We’ve included a photo of this temple, and a photo of the temple complex at Nikko an hour north of Tokyo. Rather than write too much in one time, we’ve decided to span a few months and hope you enjoy some of our thoughts – if you have specific questions on Japan we’ll be glad to reply if we are able. ast autumn, as I glanced out the kitchen window, I saw a Swainson’s Thrush – a migrating songbird – perched on the Lbackyard fence. It was picking blue Virginia Creeper berries from the vine draped across the fence and gulping them down hungrily. Five years ago, when I began to naturalize my small urban backyard with native plants, I was dreaming of moments like these. As the height of gardening and landscaping season is upon us in June, consider the rewards of choosing shrubs or vines that birds will love. Many types of shrubs produce berries or fruits, which can be consumed by birds, even though they may not be edible by humans. These can be important sources of nutrition for birds, especially the

As an added bonus, hummingbirds plants for your garden, check out the Canadian enjoy the nectar of the honeysuckle flower. Some examples of fruiting shrubs in my yard include Serviceberry, High-Bush Cranberry, Chokecherry and Alternate-Leaved (or Pagoda) Dogwood. These are all native to our area and require little maintenance. Vines can also be a good source of food for birds. Both the Virginia Creeper and Boston Ivy produce blue fruits that birds will eat. I didn’t have to plant the Creeper – it just seems to be everywhere. Another very pretty vine is Celastrus (Bittersweet), which produces colourful fruits that split open to reveal bright orange-coloured seeds. However, you need both male and female plants to produce seeds. On my street, there is a wonderful Bittersweet vine that twines around a telephone pole. Another consideration for birds in the garden, aside from food, is shelter. Coniferous (or evergreen) shrubs and trees provide important refuges for birds. Spruce trees can provide nesting places and shelter from winter snow. Juniper shrubs of various kinds not only provide shelter, but some birds will eat their berries. Cedars are also appreciated by birds, as their dense foliage provides excellent cover. House Finches and Robins seem especially fond of Cedars and often make their nests in them. It’s especially gratifying to watch a bird, such as a Robin, enjoying a feast of small fruits Page 26 The OSCAR - OUR 37th YEAR JUNE 2010 Ottawa’s Welcoming Communities Showing the World How It’s Done

This Cont’d on previous page with recent Ministry announcements and Board number-crunching. As well, and not discussed previously, the implications for the OCDSB of the Extended Day Program or EDP component, or the before and after school care program, are becoming clearer. None of the schools jointly identified for Year One are in Capital Ward as the schools are to those with available space and also higher than average need. However, the budget implications of Year One will affect local schools indirectly, and also locked-in precedents and standards created now will affect schools in subsequent phases. The ELP cost to the OCDSB for the 50 all- day classrooms we are required to provide are underfunded by about $1.3m. Enrolment is above expectations at one Kanata-area school likely requiring OCDSB-only funding of two additional classrooms if we do not shift these classrooms from elsewhere, for an additional $0.3m problem. Readers will recall that the OCDSB is facing an expanding structural deficit of $14m this year expanding further next year if not dealt with. In order to unroll Year One of the ELP the OCDSB deficit will in all likelihood balloon another $1.6m. This will mean steeper cuts than otherwise to core services to all of our schools. I have voted against adding the two classes rather than transferring under-enrolled classes from elsewhere and spreading registration pressure across classes, but this view did not enjoy a majority. Certainly there is no easy decision anywhere here however. The EDP (extended component), run on a market cost basis for this service, would likely result in a further deficit though actual numbers are unknown at this time. If run on a full cost recovery basis, as the provincial legislation requiring this service provision of school boards also seems to require, then the service likely would be priced out of market for most parents or will force us Page 32 The OSCAR - OUR 37th YEAR JUNE 2010 Red Apron Cooks Scones with Summer Berries & Whipped Cream

It could involve someone who either forged a [email protected] Bpower of attorney or who abused a legitimate power of attorney to transfer real estate to themselves. Another way to defraud someone was to forge the signature of the owner on a deed and then register the forged deed in the registry office. Usually it was family members who had the information that enabled them to carry out these kinds of frauds. As the land registration system has become electronic in a large part of Ontario it has become easier for scam artists to carry out other sophisticated schemes to access mortgage funds because there is less personal contact in all aspects of real estate transactions than there used to be. One kind of scam involves an actual owner who presents an accomplice as his or her spouse on the refinancing of the property. Once the mortgage funds are made available, the spouse and the accomplice disappear with the funds. A more complicated scam involves an insider who has access to the electronic registration system and registers a fraudulent transfer from the actual owners to fictitious owners. Then the mortgage is discharged from title and a new mortgage is applied for by the fictitious owners and registered on title. The property may also be “flipped” several more times on paper to other fictitious owners for increasing values until eventually the fraudster refinances the property. Other times the fraudster impersonates the registered owner in order to refinance the property and gain access to the mortgage funds. The fraudster may use some of the mortgage funds to keep paying the new mortgage for a few months, giving him or herself a few months lead time before the actual owner, the first mortgage lender and the new Guidance, Protection mortgage lender all discover they have been the victims of a fraud. Instead, Dr. Abuelaish, while constantly controlling his voice to hold back his deep emotions, engaged the audience in an impassioned plea for peace, tolerance and understanding. Using the tragic events of his own life, that had him witness the complete destruction of his home in Gaza by an Israeli missile, and his overwhelming grief for his three daughters who were killed in the attack, he explained why hate and revenge are not the answer but that, instead, both Palestinians and Israelis, and the world community has to come together for understanding and peace. “For the future of all of our children,” he appeals to the audience, “we have to rebuild hope, enable decent living conditions, respect for each other and abandon violence of any kind.” The cycle of violence has to be broken so that a new era of coexistence and harmony can develop. “Peace is a process”, he explains. “Those who answer violence with violence of mounting loss of life, are stuck in the past.” That is not acceptable. He made clear his belief that every child in the world should have the same opportunities to have a place in the world, to have an education, to pursue their dreams -whether that child is Palestinian, Israeli or comes from any other country. It is only when we create such conditions for every child, that we will we see progress towards global peace. “The antidote to violence is not more violence, but success”. Successful people do not resort to communal violence. He spoke about his hopes and his dreams in the face of personal traumatic events over the last eighteen months that robbed him first of his wife (due to acute leukemia) and then robbed him of three of his daughters. His daughters and a niece were killed by Israeli shells on Jan 16, 2009. Another of th Page 38 The OSCAR - OUR 37 YEAR JUNE 2010 COMPUTER TRICKS AND TIPS Why Is My Computer Dragging Its Feet?
