Small Private Collections Small Private Collections Archives service Small Private Collections Cavan County Archives Service holds a number of collections acquired from private sources. Most of these collections are small, some containing only one or a few documents. For convenience, most of these collections are listed together in one database. A detailed list of documents is given below. Documents primarily relate to property transactions but there are some exceptions to this, for example, the diary (1861-1871) of the Reverend Randal McCollum, Presbyterian Minister at Glasleck, near Shercock; a Great Famine emigration letter; a letter relating to the 1916 Easter Rising; business records; and an accounts book of Bailieborough Model Farm. Due to the wide variety of records, researchers hoping to find records relating to a specific subject, person or place, may find it useful to carry out keyword searches on the list below. It should be noted that the spellings of personal names and placenames in original documents are normally those used in descriptions of documents. The spellings of placenames vary hugely over time. Some placenames, usually townlands, have been standardised using the spellings given in the Townland Index and on Ordnance Survey maps. Where official spellings have been inserted, the spelling used on the document has been inserted into parentheses. This database lists collections numbered P3 to P30. P1 refers to the Farnham Estate Archive. Because of its large size, this collection has been listed in a discrete database. The collection numbered P2 which refers to Co-Operative Societies is also listed in a discrete descriptive list. The provenance of some of the collections listed below is unclear and the relationship between documents in some collections, particularly P17 and P26, seems tenuous. It may be that these particular collections are random aggregations of documents relating to county Cavan. Summary descriptions of collections are given below. Collection Summary description of collection code P3 Notebook relating to unnamed shop, [Cavan town], 1905-1920 P4 Florinda Cecelia Marsh P5 George Crawford – letter relating to the 1916 Easter Rising P6 Andy McEntee, journalist, Anglo-Celt newspaper P7 Francis McBreen, solicitor, Bailieborough P8 1903 Ordnance Survey map of parts of Cavan, Fermanagh, Leitrim and Monaghan P9 Maggie McCabe P10 St Anne’s Band, Bailieborough P11 McCabe’s Hotel, Cavan town P12 Praesidium of Our Lady Refuge of Sinners, Bailieborough P13 Farnham Estate Papers (purchase) P14 Bailieborough Model Farm P15 Papers of Thomas Chambers, agent to the Bailieborough Castle Estate P16 Papers relating to the Thornton and Fraser estate. RoBERT CuLHANE . MOST REV. FATHER PATRICK MURRAY (1865-1959) SUPERIOR GENERAL, C.SS.R., 1909-1947. BIOGRAPHICAL OUTLINE OVER THE YEARS I865-1909. INTRODUCTION. Sir Peter Lely was at his best when painting court beauties. He knew, too, how to play his cards with people that mattered. A favourite at the court of Charles I and of Charles II; he was still in favour during the Commonwealth. During this period his ability and tact stood one unusual test. Oliver Cromwell (according to a story evidently not maimed in the telling) charged him to include in· his portrait cc all these roughnesses, pim ples, and watts, and everything you see, otherwise I will never pay a farthing for it ». Father Patrick Murray was obliged to suffer the attentions of a photo grapher on a few occasions. Nothing would have annoyed him more than :> literary portrait, especially one leaning somewhat on his merits. cc 1 know n he said once, « that a necrology, with an account of one's virtues, is prescribed but I do hope that I will be spared one n. Fortunately in the past obedience to like wishes has been more honoured in the breach than in the observance. Had it not been so the world would have been the poorer for much of the literature that has nourished and improved millions. Literature is meant to express excellence. Let it not be thought for a moment that literature, even of the humblest type, is offered in the following pages. Apart from other considerations the circumstances of their composi tion prevent any such claim.

  • County Longford Tourism Statement of Strategy and Work Programme
2017- 2022 County Longford Tourism Statement of Strategy and Work Programme 1 County Longford Tourism Statement of Strategy and Work Programme 2017-2022 FOREWORD BY CATHAOIRLEACH AND CHIEF EXECUTIVE The County Tourism Strategy is prepared by Longford County Council working in partnership with County Longford Tourism Committee, the representative body of all tourism interests within County Longford. This Strategy sets out the overall Vision for tourism in County Longford over the next 5 years. To place Longford Tourism into context, Fáilte Ireland figures from 2013 show that while 772,000 tourists visited the Midlands Region in 2013 only 3% (22,000) visited County Longford. Therefore, the aim of this Strategy is to grow that percentage share by developing a thriving tourism sector in a planned, co-ordinated and cohesive manner as set out in this Strategy. It includes an ambitious programme of work to be undertaken within the County over that period in order to build local products and services that appeal to the marketplace. Centrally it also recognises the collective contributory role the County has to play in facilitating and supporting planned regional tourism development and complementing national tourism initiatives such as Ireland’s Ancient East. A review of the programme of work outlined and completed under previous strategies undertaken from 2010 to 2016, combined with an analysis of the current strength of the tourism sector within the County helped us to prioritise actions going forward. Since 2010, the County Longford Tourism Committee has refocused attention and energy on the potential for the tourism sector to be the key economic driver for County Longford.

The Nobel Laureate was connected to the area through the nearby Glanmore Cottage where he lived with his wife Marie for five years in the 1970s. He maintained a close connection with the area and visited regularly as he sought inspiration for his poetry. He bought the cottage when it went on the Page 1 CNI News 14 October market in 1988 and divided his time between Dublin and Wicklow. Last night’s service was attended by Marie Heaney and the couple’s son Christopher along with his wife Jenny McCrohan and their daughter Anna Rose. Welcoming them, the Vicar the Revd Ken Rue noted that the Heaney family had been very generous to the church. The dedication took place after the Wicklow and Killiskey Harvest Thanksgiving Service. The Vicar was joined by the Archdeacon of Glendalough, the Ven Ricky Rountree, who preached and dedicated the plaque and the new Parish Priest of Ashford, the Very Revd Eamonn Crosson, who read the Gospel. A number of Seamus Heaney’s poems were read during the service.

  • The Life and Times of Captain William Flack
The Life and Times of Captain William Flack The story of a remarkable man who survived and prospered despite the momentous odds he and his wife Lucy faced in their lives. The Life and Times of William Flack (1810-1892) How can we begin to understand the lives of our ancestors without knowing something of the social and economic conditions in which they lived? In the following story (with family history records included), I hope to visit the life and times of my Great Great Grandfather, William Flack so as to gain some insight into his life in the context of the social conditions and historical events of his times. This essay tours the social and political environment in which he lived in the County Cavan community in the early 1800s and then describes the events that impacted on his 21 years in the British Army and his “retirement” years in Burnley, Lancashire. The sources are noted where appropriate and a Bibliography is included at the end. William Flack came from Bailieborough, County Cavan, Ulster William Flack was born on 1 April 1810 in or near the town of Bailieborough in Cavan, then a part of Ulster which had been under British rule since the 17th Century and governed through an Irish Parliament based in Dublin. In 1800, the Act of Union abolished the Irish Parliament and allowed for the election of 100 Irish members to the Westminster Parliament. Before the Plantation of Ulster, the area that became Bailieborough was known as Killechally, Killycolly and Killycollie (Irish: Coill an Chollaigh, meaning "forest of boar").
