Thursday 28 January 7.15 - 10.15 Your Industry Partners Session entitled Charting our Water Future: Pathways for Reform

Since 2006 the World Economic Forum Water Initiative has raised awareness on the need to manage our future water needs and the challenge to economic and social security if we fail to do so. The work has helped catalyse several major initiatives in the water management space.

This private session will convene subject-expert and private sector representatives from key international water initiatives, alongside officials from governments and international organisations. The purpose is to explore a common goal: can a multistakeholder platform be formed to help a core group of governments who face severe water security challenges to their growth in the next decade, develop and implement a set of practical water reform pathways?

1) What is the case for a major rethink and redesign of the reform agenda on water? 2) What framework of analysis can this reform be credibly built upon? 3) What should the main areas of the reform focus be? (Water Initiative - Private Meeting) (Derby Hotel Davos, Fluela 1)

Saturday 30 January 8.00 - 10.00 Your WorkSpace entitled Informal Gathering of World Economic Leaders: Global Financial Regulatory Reform: Translating Principles into Effective Policies

G20 leaders have agreed to a strong set of principles to guide the reform of financial markets in such areas as capital adequacy, risk management, derivative products, credit ratings, executive compensation, etc. They have directed the FSB and respective national finance ministers to develop specific proposals for implementation on a coordinated basis so as to maximize their effectiveness and avoid regulatory arbitrage.

How have international efforts progressed in reforming financial systems to render them more “fail safe” and resilient?

What are the key remaining items in disagreement among countries and across the public and private sectors? Are there gaps in global regulatory reforms as well as potential structural imbalances which are not being addressed?

What strategies are required to bridge these differences and the remaining gaps in 2010?

2010 is likely to be a pivotal year for global economic recovery. Asset market prices have rebounded and economic growth has resumed in many parts of the world. However, it is not yet clear how strong and durable the recovery will be. In many parts of the world unemployment remains stubbornly high.

What is the latest outlook for global growth, and how can policy- makers maximize the job-creation intensity of the recovery?

What steps could be taken to place employment, social protection and broad-based progress in living standards more at the centre of economic policy?
