Prof. Dr. Veerabhadran Ramanathan

Veerabhadran Ramanathan ist als “Distinguished Professor of Climate and Atmospheric Sciences” am Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California, San Diego, USA tätig. An der Energy and Resources Institute University (TERI) in Neu Delhi, Indien arbeitet er zudem als UNESCO Professor for Climate and Policy.

Veerabhadran Ramanathan erwarb einen Bachelor in Maschinenbau an der Annamalai University in Tamil Nadu, Indien sowie einen Master in Energy Transfer am Indian Institute of Science in , Indien. Den Doktorgrad in Planetary Atmospheres an der State University of New York (SUNY), Stony Brook erlangte er 1973. Im Anschluss wurde Veerabhadran Ramanathan ein National Research Council Postdoctoral Fellow am NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia, USA. Im Jahr 1976 wechselte er als Research Scientist an das National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colorado. 1986 wurde er Professor am Department of Geophysical Sciences der University of Chicago faculty, bevor er 1990 seine Arbeit am Scripps aufnahm.

Im September 2013 erhielt Veerabhadran Ramanathan mit dem “Champions of the Earth for Science and Innovation“ Preis die höchste Auszeichnung der UN im Bereich Umwelt. Veerabhadran Ramanathan ist Mitglied der American Philosophical Society, der US National Academy of Sciences, der Päpstlichen Akademie und der Königlich-Schwedischen Akademie der Wissenschaften.

Veerabhadran Ramanathan is Distinguished Professor at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California at San Diego, USA and UNESCO Professor of Climate and Policy at the Energy and Resources Institute University (TERI), Delhi, . He leads research projects involving global climate dynamics, the , air pollution, and climate mitigation.

Veerabhadran Ramanathan holds a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Annamalai University in Tamil Nadu, India and a master’s degree in energy transfer from the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore, India. He received his doctoral degree in planetary atmospheres from the State University of New York (SUNY), Stony Brook, in 1973 and afterwards became a National Research Council Postdoctoral Fellow at NASA’s Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia. In 1976, he joined the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colorado, as a research scientist and in 1986 became a professor in the Department of Geophysical Sciences at the University of Chicago faculty and served until 1990, before taking office at the Scripps the same year.

In 2013, Veerabhadran Ramanathan was awarded the top environment prize from the United Nations, the Champions of Earth for Science and Innovation. He has been elected to the US National Academy of Sciences, American Philosophical Society, the Pontifical Academy by Pope John Paul II and the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.
