#balliolwomen www.balliol.ox.ac.uk/balliol-women-40 A weekend of conversation and celebration Friday 27 September to Sunday 29 September 2019 BALLIOL COLLEGE WELCOME FROM THE MASTER When we first started planning for this weekend to mark the 40th anniversary of women being admitted to Balliol as students, we were very conscious of two things: that Balliol women would want much more than (however enjoyable) a party, and that they would want to be deeply involved in the planning and the events. We are enormously grateful for all the ideas and offers of help we received (not all of which we could accommodate in 36 hours). Out of this rich mix came the idea of ‘conversation and celebration’, encompassing serious conversations about serious issues for women in 2019, alongside a celebration of community, aspiration and all that Balliol’s women have achieved since 1979. While we are all painfully aware that the fight for gender equality, in all its aspects, still goes on, we hope that you will leave Balliol cheered, energised and inspired to play a part in whatever the next challenge may be. Byrd 1 Ellie Byrd Dr. Lange ENG 218w Charles Dickens’ Corruption and Idealization Personified in Oliver Twist In Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist, the depictions of corruption and virtue are prevalent throughout most of the novel and take the physical form in the city and the country. Oliver spends much of his time in London among criminals and the impoverished, and here is where Dickens takes the city of London and turns it into a dark and degraded place. Dickens’ London is inherently immoral and serves as a center for the corruption of mind and spirit which is demonstrated through the seedy scenes Dickens paints of London, the people who reside there, and by casting doubt in individuals who otherwise possess a decent moral compass. Furthermore, Dickens’ strict contrast of the country to these scenes further establishes the sinister presence of London. -

Fiction Excerpt: From Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens Oliver Twist was the second novel written by Charles Dickens. It was first published as a serial, with new chapters printed monthly in the magazine Bentley’s Miscellany over the course of two years (1837–1839). The novel tells the story of an orphan named Oliver Twist, who was born in a workhouse and later escaped to join a gang of thieves. This excerpt takes place during Oliver’s time in the workhouse. The room in which the boys were fed, was a large stone hall, with a copper [a large, heated copper pot] at one end: out of which the master, dressed in an apron for the purpose, and assisted by one or two women, ladled the gruel [a watery cereal like very thin oatmeal] at mealtimes. Of this festive composition each boy had one porringer [small bowl], and no more—except on occasions of great public rejoicing, when he had two ounces and a quarter of bread besides. The bowls never wanted washing. The boys polished them with their spoons till they shone again; and when they had performed this operation (which never took very long, the spoons being nearly as large as the bowls), they would sit staring at the copper, with such eager eyes, as if they could have devoured the very bricks of which it was composed; employing themselves, meanwhile, in sucking their fingers most assiduously [diligently], with the view of catching up any stray splashes of gruel that might have been cast thereon. Boys have generally excellent appetites. -

Casting Announced for BBC One's the Pale Horse
Casting announced for BBC One’s The Pale Horse Date: 31.07.2019 Casting for the latest Agatha Christie drama, The Pale Horse has been announced by BBC One, Mammoth Screen and Agatha Christie Limited. Rufus Sewell (The Man In The High Castle, The Marvellous Mrs. Maisel, The Father), plays Mark Easterbrook and is joined by Kaya Scodelario (Crawl, Extremely Wicked and Shockingly Evil And Vile) playing Hermia, Bertie Carvel (Doctor Foster, Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell) as Zachariah Osborne, Sean Pertwee (Gotham, Elementary) as Detective Inspector Lejeune, Henry Lloyd-Hughes (Killing Eve, Indian Summers) as David Ardingly, and Poppy Gilbert (Call The Midwife) as Thomasina Tuckerton, Madeleine Bowyer (Black Mirror, Britannia) as Jessie Davis and Ellen Robertson (Snowflake, Britney Soho) as Poppy. Sarah Woodward (Queens Of Mystery, Loving Miss Hatto), Georgina Campbell (His Dark Materials, Black Mirror) and Claire Skinner (Outnumbered, Vanity Fair) will also star. Word has it that the witches can do away with wealthy relatives by means of the dark arts, but as the bodies mount up, Mark is certain there has to be a rational explanation. -

Nommé Oliver Twist, il vit une enfance misérable à l’orphelinat, supervisé par la sadique Mrs Corney et le brutal Mr Bumble. Il ne se laisse cependant pas faire et ose redemander une ration de gruau. Il est alors vendu comme apprenti à Sowerberry, le croque-mort de la ville. Il ne gagne guère au change et s’enfuit à Londres. Pendant ce temps-là, un homme mystérieux se rend à l’orphelinat pour s’enquérir du jeune enfant… Arrivé à Londres, Oliver fait la rencontre d’Artful Dodger, un jeune voleur à la tire qui travaille pour le compte du hideux Fagin et de sa bande, le terrifiant Bill Sikes et la belle Nancy. -

Images courtesy Mammoth Screen / Agatha Christie Ltd / BBC Starring Rufus Sewell, Kaya Scoledario, the two part-part drama produced by Mammoth Screen and Agatha Christie Limited for BBC One is adapted by Sarah Phelps (The ABC Murders, Ordeal By Innocence) from the 1961 Agatha Christie novel of the same name. It filmed between July to September last year on set at The Bottle Yard Studios and on location in Bristol with support from Bristol Film Office. A major Chelsea apartment set was built at the Studios where a large proportion of filming took place, whilst the six week shoot also used a host of Bristol locations. Frogmore Street and Cave Street double as the East End, Denmark Street stands in for the Soho district, properties overlooking St Nicholas market were brought to life as period police station interiors, Queen’s Square doubles as a Chelsea apartment block and Clifton Village’s picturesque West Mall doubles as the Capital’s iconic King’s Road. -

The production that graces the stage today demonstrates Cameron Mackintosh‟s passion for Lionel Bart‟s musical about a young orphan boy and his adventures in Victorian London. The lavish show features a cast and orchestra of more than 100.
