3-TIME MONTPELLIER CHAMP GASQUET MEETS 1ST-TIME FINALIST POUILLE

• The singles championship at the will be determined on Sunday as No. 2 seed squares off against No. 5 seed , in an all-French battle royale. The encounter between the compatriots guarantees that the singles trophy will go to a French player for the sixth time in the eight tournaments contested in Montpellier. Pouille and Gasquet have met once before at this event, with Gasquet prevailing in a second-round encounter in 2015 – his only win in four matches against Pouille.

• Gasquet is hoping that his unparalleled level of excellence in Montpellier will extend one match further in 2018, as he aims to win a fourth title to go with his championships from 2013, 2015, and 2016. With runner-up showings in 2014 as well as last year, this is the sixth consecutive year Gasquet will play in the last singles match of the event. His stunning win/loss record at the event was extended to 24-4 after he picked up his 31st Top 10 win in the semi-finals over top seed and World No. 7 . Gasquet was blanked by Goffin in the second set, receiving his first ever 0-6 set at this venue, but rebounded to claim a three-set win.

• Pouille, currently the top-ranked Frenchman at World No. 17, came into the event with far less prior success in Montpellier, having won only one match in two previous appearances. Moreover, he had played only one match this year before arriving at the Open Sud de France, that being a four-set loss to in the first round of the . But Pouille ousted compatriot Benoit Paire in the quarter-finals before advancing past No. 3 seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the semi-finals. In the semi-final, Pouille faced two match points while serving at 1-6 3-5, but held serve, and then broke Tsonga for 5-5, at which point the third seed retired due to a hamstring injury.

• In the opening championship match of the day, the British siblings Ken and will take on the 4th- seeded team of Ben Mclachlan from Japan and Hugo Nys of France. Mclachlan and Nys are into the final having paired up for the very first time in Montpellier, and Nys will be looking for his first ATP World Tour title (Mclachlan won Tokyo last year for his maiden title). The Skupski brothers have played 30 events together, but this is their first final appearance as a team since Moscow in 2013. Older sibling Ken has 3 titles to his name, while this is Neal’s second final, including their Moscow run.

MONTPELLIER SEMI-FINAL SATURDAY FEATURES FOUR OF TOP FIVE SEEDS

• The final four at the Open Sud de France is composed of the top three seeds and a three-time champion, with No. 1 seed David Goffin of Belgium taking on 5th-seeded Frenchman Richard Gasquet, and No. 2 seed Lucas Pouille facing 3rd-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in an all-French encounter. All four players are into their first ATP World Tour semi-final of the season.

• Play opens on Court Patrice Dominguez with Gasquet, the winner in 2013, 2015, and 2016, squaring off against World No. 7 Goffin, who has picked up his first main draw wins in Montpellier this year. The only previous meeting between the two took place in the quarter-finals at Tokyo last year, which the Belgian won in straight sets during his 9-match winning streak that saw him pick up back-to-back titles in Shenzhen and Tokyo. To repeat that victory, though, Goffin will need to oust Gasquet, who has reached the final in each of the last five years and has compiled a 21-2 record at the Open Sud de France from 2013 up to the present.

• The battle between compatriots Pouille and Tsonga follows the first semi-final. The two highest-ranked Frenchmen faced off in two ATP World Tour finals last year: Tsonga prevailed in Marseille to win his second of four titles in 2017, while Pouille claimed his third title of the year in Vienna, handing Tsonga his only loss in a final during the season in the process. Tsonga has made the semi-finals each time he has played Montpellier (2010, 2017, and 2018) but is yet to make the championship match.

TOP SIX SEEDS ALL IN ACTION ON QUARTER-FINAL FRIDAY IN MONTPELLIER

• The quarter-finals of the Open Sud de France kick off on Friday with top seed and World No. 7 David Goffin of Belgium squaring off against Russia’s . Last year was a spotlight season for both players, as Goffin defeated No. 1 and No. 2 en route to the championship match of the Nitto ATP Finals, and Khachanov reached a career-high ranking of No. 29 and qualified for the inaugural Next Gen ATP Finals. Goffin and Khachanov faced each other three times during the year, with Goffin coming out on top twice, at the ATP Masters 1000 events in Indian Wells and Madrid. Khachanov was able to beat Goffin in Barcelona between those two losses.

• The remaining three quarter-finals all feature French title hopes. First up is three-time champion and No. 5 seed Richard Gasquet, who will meet 4th-seeded Damir Dzumhur of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Gasquet is 20-2 in Montpellier from 2013 to the present, having reached at least the final in each of the last five years. However, the Open Sud de France was the Frenchman’s only final of last year (losing to Alexander Zverev), while Dzumhur reached three championship matches in 2017, winning his first two career titles in Moscow and St. Petersburg.

• By contrast to Gasquet, No. 3 seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga collected four ATP World Tour titles last year, in Rotterdam, Marseille, Lyon, and Antwerp. But Tsonga is not one of the four French players who have reached the final in Montpellier, as his best result so far is a semi-final in both 2010 and 2017. To keep his 2018 run rolling, Tsonga must get past #NextGenATP star and No. 6 seed of Russia. The 20-year-old Russian won both of his matches this week in straight sets, while Tsonga needed three tiebreak sets to outlast compatriot in the second round, after a first-round bye.

• An all-French affair rounds out the day when 2nd-seeded Lucas Pouille faces off against 2013 runner-up Benoit Paire. Pouille, currently the top-ranked Frenchman, has won both of his previous ATP World Tour matches against Paire. But Paire has an excellent history in Montpellier, with a semi-final appearance last year to back up his run to the championship match five years ago.

POUILLE, TSONGA, GASQUET LEAD FRENCH FIELD ON FOURTH DAY

• Six second-round matches take place at the Open Sud de France on Thursday, four of which include six French players. No. 2 seed Lucas Pouille, currently the top-ranked player from France, has had only one prior main draw win in Montpellier, and to reach the quarter-finals for the first time, Pouille will have to get past Spanish qualifier . The 20-year-old Taberner made his ATP World Tour main draw debut this week, and claimed his first win at Tour level over fellow qualifier Norbert Gombos in the first round.

• Like Pouille, 3rd-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga will play his first match after a first-round bye, where he will meet compatriot Nicolas Mahut. Tsonga has made the semi-finals both times he’s played Montpellier in the past, in 2010 and 2017, but has not yet been able to advance to the final. Meanwhile, Mahut received a win at this event for the first time since his run to the quarter-finals in 2012, but it was in an unconventional manner, as had to retire from their first-round match due to lumbalgic pain, despite the German being a single game away from victory.

• Three-time champion and No. 5 seed Richard Gasquet takes to the court again, following his first-round victory over rising Russian . There, he will meet countryman Pierre-Hugues Herbert, who is into the Montpellier second round for the third time, but is still awaiting his first quarter-final berth. To get there, Herbert will have to eliminate Gasquet, who has made the final in each of the last five years. Another French player, Benoit Paire, who lost to Gasquet in the 2013 final, closes out the schedule against Australian . Millman won their only previous match, a four-set victory in the second round of Wimbledon in 2016.

• In another second-round encounter, Ricardas Berankis of Lithuania and Russia’s Karen Khachanov open play on Court Patrice Dominguez, each having claimed their very first wins at the Open Sud de France in the first round. Also, on Court 1, 4th-seeded Damir Dzumhur of Bosnia and Herzegovina makes his Montpellier debut against Belgian Ruben Bemelmans, a quarter-finalist in 2016.

TOP SEED GOFFIN, 3-TIME CHAMPION GASQUET KICK OFF CAMPAIGNS

• Top seed David Goffin of Belgium will contest the second round of the Open Sud de France on Wednesday when he faces off against Frenchman . In 2017, Goffin finished a year-end best No. 7 with two titles and three runner-up showings, including at the Nitto ATP Finals in London, where he claimed wins over No. 1 Rafael Nadal and No. 2 Roger Federer. However, Goffin will face a formidable foe in Simon, who was a semi-finalist in Montpellier in 2012, and has been a quarter-finalist three other times. Moreover, Simon has a 2- 1 lead in their head-to-head, including a second-round win at the ATP Masters 1000 in Shanghai last year, which ended Goffin’s 9-match winning streak after the Belgian won consecutive titles at Shenzhen and Tokyo.

• Another second-round encounter will occur between France’s Jeremy Chardy and Andrey Rublev of Russia, the No. 6 seed. Chardy made the quarter-finals last year in his debut appearance, and will have to overcome last year’s Next Gen ATP Finals runner-up if he wants to match that feat. Chardy took out Rublev’s #NextGenATP peer Stefanos Tsitsipas in the first round, 7-5 in the third set, to clinch his first ATP World Tour win of the year. Rublev, however, has gone 3-0 against Chardy on the ATP Challenger Tour.

• In the first round, Richard Gasquet, the No.5 seed and a three-time Montpellier champion (2013, 2015, and 2016), will kick off his campaign for a fourth title against another young Russian, 21-year-old Daniil Medvedev. Gasquet has a staggering 20-4 win/loss record in Montpellier, although an 11-match winning streak at the event was snapped by Alexander Zverev in last year’s final. Medvedev, a Next Gen ATP Finals semi-finalist last year, started the year brilliantly by winning his first ATP World Tour singles title in Sydney.

• Four more Frenchmen are in first-round action on Wednesday. In an all-French affair, Pierre-Hugues Herbert will square off against qualifier , a quarter-finalist last year. 2012 quarter-finalist Nicolas Mahut meets Germany’s Dustin Brown, who reached the semi-finals in 2016 and the quarter-finals last year. Finally, wild card Calvin Hemery takes on Ruben Bemelmans of Belgium. A first-round match without any French players will also take place, as No. 8 seed Yuichi Sugita of Japan will play Australian John Millman.

FRENCH VETERANS LOOK FOR BREAKTHROUGHS ON DAY TWO

• Five first-round matches take place on Court Patrice Dominguez on Tuesday at the Open Sud de France. Three of the matches feature French players, at an event which has historically been kind to home contenders. In the seven previous times the event has been contested, five champions and five finalists have represented France, although none of the trio playing on Tuesday are on either of those lists.

• Gilles Simon has come the closest of the three to making the final, as he was a semi-finalist in 2012 and a quarter-finalist three additional times. The 33-year-old, who won his 13th ATP World Tour singles title in Pune to start the year, will face off against German qualifier Yannick Maden, who is currently at a career-high ranking of No. 142.

• Simon’s compatriot made the quarter-finals in his first appearance at Montpellier in 2013, but has not been back to that round since. He will open his latest attempt to match that result against Lithuanian Ricardas Berankis. Fellow Frenchman Jeremy Chardy also made the Montpellier quarter-finals on his debut, which was last year. He will play #NextGenATP contender Stefanos Tsitsipas, who currently finds himself at a career-high ranking of No. 78.

• In the final match of the day, 21-year-old Russian Karen Khachanov, one of last year’s #NextGenATP stars, will take on 7th seed and former World No. 3 David Ferrer of Spain for the first time. Khachanov and Ferrer both had their best results of the year so far in Auckland, where they reached the quarter-finals and semi-finals respectively, before they each lost to Juan Martin del Potro.

• Additionally, two qualifiers will meet up in the first round, as Spain’s Carlos Taberner and ’s Norbert Gombos open play. This will be the ATP World Tour main draw debut for the 20-year-old Taberner.

10 THINGS TO WATCH IN MONTPELLIER

1) Frenchmen Headline Field: Three of the top five seeds are Frenchmen in Montpellier, which is one of five ATP World Tour tournaments in France. Belgian David Goffin is the top seed, followed by Frenchmen Lucas Pouille and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. No. 4 seed is Bosnian Damir Dzumhur and No. 5 is three-time champion Richard Gasquet, who is the only former winner in the field.

2) French Home Success: This is the eighth edition of Montpellier since 2010 (not held in 2011), and in the previous seven tournaments a Frenchman has won the title or reached the final every year. Besides Gasquet’s three titles, Gael Monfils won in 2010 and 2014. In the only years a Frenchman did not win the title, Monfils was runner-up in 2012 and Gasquet last year.

3) Goffin Top Seed: Goffin is making his Montpellier debut and this is the Belgian’s second tournament of the season. He lost in the 2R at the Australian Open. Last season he finished a year- end best No. 7 with two titles and three runner-up showings, including the ATP Finals in London.

4) Pouille Returns: The top Frenchman in the ATP Rankings, Pouille, makes his return to Montpellier for the first time since 2015 when he lost in the 2R. Last year he won a career-high three ATP World Tour titles and finished in the Top 20 for the second consecutive season at No. 18.

5) Tsonga on French Soil: Tsonga is making his third appearance in Montpellier after SF results in 2010 and last year. Eight of Tsonga’s 16 ATP World Tour titles have come on home soil, including two last season in Marseille and Lyon. Of his career-best four titles in 2017, three came indoors.

6) Gasquet Eyes Fourth Title: Three-time Montpellier champion Gasquet has a 20-4 career record, the most wins in tournament history. He is 18-2 since 2013. He has reached the final the past five years, winning in 2013 and 2015-16 and finishing runner-up in 2014 and last year.

7) Simon Off to Fast Start: Gilles Simon is off to a 6-2 start after winning his 13th career ATP World Tour title in Pune in the opening week of the season. It was Simon’s first title since 2015 Marseille. He is 6-6 in Montpellier with a SF in 2012 and three QF finishes.
