David Harris 12 05 1924 – 12 03 2017

Maggie, Agnès and Peter would like to thank all the kind and generous people for their unfailing support during this difficult time. We are truly grateful for the great care and thought given to make a very touching and memorable Thanksgiving Service in the Church of St. Peter, Broad Hinton. We will carry these fond and everlasting memories with us to new horizons.

Broad Hinton Church Spring Clean Up

We shall be giving the church a thorough spring clean on Saturday May 8th, starting at 9.30am. We would welcome assistance, even if only for an hour or so. We’ll provide the brushes, dusters and so on, but we could do with more hands to wield them. It’s usually all done in the morning, so isn’t that onerous. We need help to tidy up the churchyard, so gardeners would be very welcome, and also taller, stronger people (You aren’t supposed to specify men any longer!) would be particularly useful for some things that need doing up ladders,

Yours hopefully,

Sally Cartwright and Jenni Moseling, Churchwardens

The Churchyard at St Katherine and St. Peter’s Church, Winterbourne Bassett

Here in Winterbourne Bassett we are very fortunate to have a small beautiful ancient church and a fine churchyard both of which are loved and cared for by residents of the parish and much admired by visitors. Recently when there was a village “clean up” pieces of broken glass and china were discovered in the grass near memorial stones; these are remnants of vases or containers left holding flowers or just placed as mementoes. Grieving for loved ones is a difficult process and there is a need to express grief or memories in different ways. However china or glass receptacles that can be blown down by the wind or knocked over by a child or dog are dangerous to visitors; someone can fall over and be cut by a broken shard of glass or a dog accompanying its owner can be hurt; glass under strong sunlight can cause a fire.

It would be helpful if any of us attending a grave or memorial could bear these issues in mind. Keeping memorial stones and gravestones clear and simple contributes to the good maintenance of this beautiful tranquil churchyard; it is a churchyard surrounded by plants, trees and flowers, birdsong and has a wonderful view to the downs. All these wonderful natural features must in their own way create a very special place for loved ones ‘At Rest’ without the need to add anything else to the memorial stones and gravestones placed there.

Pets Need New Home

Can you help me? For many years I have cared for 3 adult male spur-thighed tortoises but I am now looking to rehome them as I no longer feel able to look after them as I would like. We have had one for nearly 50 years and the youngest is about 25 years old. They spend the summer in the garden and they hibernate in September until the spring. If you can help please call 731315.

Village Clean-up Day 25th March

Once again, thanks go to the dozens of villagers who wandered the highways and byways of Broad Hinton and Winterbourne Bassett on a sunny Saturday morning, collecting many, many, far too many bags of other people’s rubbish. A magnificent job.

Many thanks to all who helped from Jim Gunter & Adrian Smith for the Parish Council and from all your fellow residents.

The Fate of the Fête . . . . . is in your hands!

As many of you will have witnessed, the Broad Hinton and Uffcott Village Fête has been transformed in recent years and has become a major social occasion within our communities. It has become a ‘classic’ British village fête offering fun and games, food and drink, market stalls, dog shows and, occasionally, arena events such as ‘Soak The Vicar’ and Karate Demonstrations. However, the small team who organise the event and who are key to its smooth running are, shall we say, ‘of mature years’. They are now of an age when the physical demands of erecting and dismantling the marquees, gazebos and games equipment are such that they cannot face a further event . . . . unless they get support from younger and fitter volunteers from the villages. And that is the key to this appeal. We need to recruit a gang of fit and able folk who could help setting up the Fête site and, later, dismantling the same. Hitherto, the Fête site has been erected on the afternoon of the Thursday before the event, with further preparations going on throughout the Friday. Since a younger team would be at work during the daytime, we would carry out the preparatory work in one or two evenings of the week ahead of the big day. The dismantling of the site, to a large extent, is done on the day once the happy crowds have dispersed, but it could be delayed until an evening work party can be assembled. We are therefore drawing up a list of volunteers who are prepared to assist the Fête Team in running the 2017 Fête which will be held on Saturday, 9th September. We are looking for your help, not only with the erection and dismantling as discussed above, but also with running events on the day. We are enormously grateful to those good people who have helped at recent Fêtes but we would welcome new faces to either spread the load or, perhaps, allow us to add further attractions. So . . . . the fate of the Fête lies in your hands. Without your assistance with the physical side of the event, the Village Fête will die and Broad Hinton and Uffcott will lose one of their most popular community events. It would be very sad if we, as a community, could not hold an annual summer fête. Please register your preparedness to help with the 2017 Village Fête by ‘signing up’ with members of the current Fête Team, namely: Brian Poulton ([email protected]) Mark Wightman ([email protected]) or Des Clarke ([email protected])

THE RIDGEWAY LADIES

On Wednesday 5th April the Ridgeway Ladies were delighted to welcome Roger Smith to their meeting. Roger is chairman of the Town Hall Museum and, with the aid of photographs, gave a talk on the history of Bassett.

He has a vast selection of photographs and it was most interesting visually comparing the town in the 1800’s to the present day. The high street certainly seemed much wider with no cars! The Town Hall was built around 1700 but fell into disrepair until Henry Meux restored it in 1890. It was subsequently, on his death, gifted to the town and in 1955 became a Grade 2 listed building. Until the 1950’s Bassett had its own cinema – Crumps the butchers is now on the site. There was a pond in the high street where ‘duckings’ frequently took place. The last person to be ‘ducked’ was Peggy Lawrence in 1767. The ducking stool can be seen in the museum but the pond is long gone.

Roger had many little anecdotes and interesting facts about Royal Wootton Bassett making his talk amusing and informative. Once again another enjoyable evening was had by all.

The museum is open on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 10am-12 noon and is free to enter. It is certainly worth a visit. Also Roger would be interested to hear from anyone who has old photographs (which they are willing to share) of R.W.B., Broad Town or Broad Hinton. Please contact him at :- [email protected].

Our next meeting is on Wednesday May 3rd at 7.45pm when Tim Weeks from Wessex Auction Rooms will be coming to visit. He will be talking about antiques and will be giving a valuation of any items that are brought along. So, ladies, if have you got a treasure lurking in your attic bring it along and join us for the evening.

If your Village Fête is to continue we need to recruit a number of helpers – the fitter the better. The most help is needed setting up and dismantling the site before and after the event (which, this year, is scheduled for Saturday, 9th September). It would also be helpful if you are able to help with running events on the day. The fate of the Fête lies in your hands … please register your interest in helping. Contact Brian Poulton ([email protected]) Mark Wightman ([email protected]) or Des Clark ([email protected])

VILLAGE SHOP

We welcome Terri Hemmings and her team and wish them every success with the Saddlery at Broad Hinton village shop.

As a generous community spirited offer, Terri has very kindly agreed to continue to supply newspapers during her normal business opening hours. We are very grateful to Terri for providing this service which otherwise would mean having to go to Wroughton or further afield to get our daily papers.

View From the Rectory

We are well and truly into Spring and the whole of creation is bursting into life around us. Sometimes finding time to really stop and notice eludes us completely. Or perhaps you are one of those who notice bits and pieces but feel unable to stop and just stand still in the moment . The loveliness lingers only briefly – and we miss so much of the Creator’s gift in the season of new life.

For much of spring a halt has been put to your Rectors gallop. Forced to move at a snails’ pace, and cover short distances I found myself treasuring the smallest of changes in nature as the season slowly started unfurling . The fruit trees in the Churchyard in full blossom, a tiny Vole with big ears in the long grass, the bees beginning to wake and forage. Clusters of hibernating ladybirds made unexpected appearances at Celtic Communion services crawling around on the white lid of the wafer-box and on the back of my white cassock. A family attending the Good Friday Walk of Witness produced two of them towards the end of the service reminding us that in the midst of trouble and pain and sadness we can find beauty to lift our spirits and gladden our hearts. Sitting as a passenger in the car I had time to watch the Kites flying high overhead, and on one walk discovered I was being watched from a fence post by a large buzzard.

At dawn on Easter Day it felt as if the whole of Creation was singing a hymn of praise- gathered together were humans of every age , a large variety of dogs, and herd of 24 young and curious cows and high on the field beyond I spotted two hares. The birdsong resounded in the still quiet half-light as we gathered. Then as the human voices rose in song the lowing began. And the sun rose and the smell of incense and burning wood and straw mingled with cooking bacon. And there was joy and it felt like the First Day of a new creation. I wonder what others noticed that morning ?

I wonder if we are so busy being busy that we forget to just BE. I am learning something of the need we ignore so often, even those of us who think we are great outdoors folk, with great energy , to simply be in and with creation. Poet and Priest John O Donoghue once wrote

‘I would love to live like a river flows, Carried by the surprise of its own unfolding’

The flow is nothing to do with a person being perfect or right or belonging to the right set and one does not even have to understand it. All we need to do is to allow ourselves to be touched and moved by the beauty around us, to find time to appreciate the moment, and admit that sometimes it is only when we are vulnerable or weak that we find the moments of true insight into the world, into creation, into God and into ourselves.
