An Introduction to Topology An Introduction to Topology The Classification theorem for Surfaces By E. C. Zeeman Introduction. The classification theorem is a beautiful example of geometric topology. Although it was discovered in the last century*, yet it manages to convey the spirit of present day research. The proof that we give here is elementary, and its is hoped more intuitive than that found in most textbooks, but in none the less rigorous. It is designed for readers who have never done any topology before. It is the sort of mathematics that could be taught in schools both to foster geometric intuition, and to counteract the present day alarming tendency to drop geometry. It is profound, and yet preserves a sense of fun. In Appendix 1 we explain how a deeper result can be proved if one has available the more sophisticated tools of analytic topology and algebraic topology. Examples. Before starting the theorem let us look at a few examples of surfaces. In any branch of mathematics it is always a good thing to start with examples, because they are the source of our intuition. All the following pictures are of surfaces in 3-dimensions. In example 1 by the word “sphere” we mean just the surface of the sphere, and not the inside. The notion of generalized 1-type is a natural generalization of 1-type in the usual sense and pointwise 1-type. We classify ruled surfaces with a generalized 1-type Gauss map as part of a plane, a circular cylinder, a cylinder over a base curve of an infinite type, a helicoid, a right cone and a conical surface of G-type. Keywords: ruled surface; pointwise 1-type Gauss map; generalized 1-type Gauss map; conical surface of G-type 1. Introduction Nash’s embedding theorem enables us to study Riemannian manifolds extensively by regarding a Riemannian manifold as a submanifold of Euclidean space with sufficiently high codimension. By means of such a setting, we can have rich geometric information from the intrinsic and extrinsic properties of submanifolds of Euclidean space. Inspired by the degree of algebraic varieties, B.-Y. Chen introduced the notion of order and type of submanifolds of Euclidean space. Furthermore, he developed the theory of finite-type submanifolds and estimated the total mean curvature of compact submanifolds of Euclidean space in the late 1970s ([1]). -

The paper treated a cone with a cylindrical helix as a directrix and the vertex on it. Characteristic elements of a surface formed in such way and the basis are identified, and characteristic flat intersections of planes are classified. Also considered is the potential of practical application of such cone in architecture and design. Key words: cocleoid cones, vertex on directrix, cylindrical helix directrix. 1. INTRODUCTION Cone is a deriving singly curved rectilinear surface. A randomly chosen point A on the directrix d1 will, along with the directirx d2 determine totally defined conical surface k, figure 1. If directirx d3 penetrates through this conical surface in the point P, then the connection line AP, regarding that it intersects all three directrices (d1, d2 and d3), will be the generatrix of rectilinear surface. This is known as the Steiner deltoid or Steiner's hypocycloid after Jakob Steiner who described the shape and symmetry of the curve in 1856. Symmetry of Molecules 1.1 Symmetry Elements · Symmetry operation: Operation that transforms a molecule to an equivalent position and orientation, i.e. after the operation every point of the molecule is coincident with an equivalent point. · Symmetry element: Geometrical entity (line, plane or point) which respect to which one or more symmetry operations can be carried out. In molecules there are only four types of symmetry elements or operations: · Mirror planes: reflection with respect to plane; notation: s · Center of inversion: inversion of all atom positions with respect to inversion center, notation i · Proper axis: Rotation by 2p/n with respect to the axis, notation Cn · Improper axis: Rotation by 2p/n with respect to the axis, followed by reflection with respect to plane, perpendicular to axis, notation Sn Formally, this classification can be further simplified by expressing the inversion i as an improper rotation S2 and the reflection s as an improper rotation S1. Thus, the only symmetry elements in molecules are Cn and Sn. Important: Successive execution of two symmetry operation corresponds to another symmetry operation of the molecule. Villarceau Circles
Villarceau Circles by Marcel Berger, Mathematician & former director of IHÉS (Institut des Hautes Études scientifiques) Figure 1: Villarceau Circles on a torus. For me, it is a great pleasure to write a text about Villarceau Circles1, because they are doubly and strongly linked to my personal life. Here is why. My first encounter with these exotic circles came about like this. In my final year of high school in 1943-1944, in addition to the typically recommended maths books, I had at hand the work that my father had had in the very same class, the exact title of these two great volumes being Traité de Géométrie by authors Rouché and de Comberousse. Certainly, they fully treated the geometry programme of final year science, but they were also filled with out of programme appendices (at that time important because they were linked to posterior geometry). Slightly obsessed with geometry, leafing through the second volume, I discovered in an appendix this surprising fact (an understatement), at least for me but probably for you too, dear reader, that a torus (always understood at the time as a torus of revolution), contained many other circles than meridian and parallel circles. I was so surprised that, instead of watching the demonstration, and in great laziness, my first reaction was to try a physical demonstration, namely to saw a ring from a wooden curtain rod. With primitive handsaws, and mainly with a ring that was ultimately too thin, the operation proved inconclusive. Regarding an elementary demonstration, and others at all levels, whose data of this result in preparatory class still remains spectacular, see 1. -

THE HOPF FIBRATION The Hopf fibration is an important object in fields of mathematics such as topology and Lie groups and has many physical applications such as rigid body mechanics and magnetic monopoles.
