17 Wymondham, pronounced “Windham”, is the largest market town in South Norfolk, with a population of over 16,000; also serving a rural hinterland of a further 15,000. It is a fast-growing community but still retains much of the character of an ancient market town.

Abbey foundation. William d’Albini, Chief Butler to Henry I, founded the abbey 1107 as a cell for his brother’s abbey in St. Albans. Dedicated at that time to the Blessed Virgin Mary, this was later changed to St. Mary and St. Thomas of Canterbury.

1174 Becket’s Chapel was built. This was the town’s library until 2008 - now the Arts Centre.

1286 First mention of a market cross in Wymondham.

Abbey Church west tower was constructed. The abbey church was intended to 1445 serve both the Benedictine monks and Wymondham’s parishioners. But there were many quarrels between the two factions, often concerning the hanging and ringing of the parish bells. These problems were eventually solved when the people erected the great west tower in 1445, and the abbey gained its independence from St. Albans in 1448.

Dissolution of the Monastries. The abbey church was granted to the people of 1538 Wymondham. The monastic buildings were demolished.

1549 Kett’s Rebellion.

The Great Fire destroyed over 300 buildings in the town centre, including the 1615 Market Cross. The Market Cross was replaced by the current building, which cost £25 to construct. It was fully restored in 1988-9 at a cost of £95,000. The Market Cross is now home to the town’s Tourist Information Centre.

The Bridewell, Wymondham’s model prison, was built. It was the first 1785 prison in the county with separate cells for inmates. The building served as a police station from 1850 – 1963, and a magistrates court from 1879 – 1992. Wymondham Bridewell Preservation Trust purchased the Bridewell in 1994, restoring and converting it for community use.

1845 The railway arrived in Wymondham via the Norwich to Ely line.

Wymondham to Dereham railway line opened, which is now operated by the 1847 Mid- Preservation Trust.

Wymondham has great appeal as a tourist destination, thanks to major attractions like the Abbey and other fine historic buildings and streetscapes, the museum, railways and green environment. Much of this appeal is fragile and might easily be overwhelmed by large numbers of visitors. Promoting sustainable tourism, fitting in with the daily life of Wymondham, is the Town Council’s key aim.

Tourist Info. The Market Cross is home to the Tourist Information Centre (TIC). It is run by the Town Council, and is a valuable resource for both local people and visitors. Greening Wymondham We are a group of volunteers who want to promote and facilitate green infrastructure improvements and appreciation of the natural environment in Wymondham.

Our volunteers regularly meet to plan and carry out environmental and sustainable projects in our town, promote re-cycling activities and raise greater awareness of environmental issues.

We have a central group who act as a committee organising our activities, managing our funds and planning future activities. Whereupon we then share this with a wider community of interested people who might then join our specific activities.

Our activities and achievements are varied and numerous, from organising Climate Change seminars, litter picks, tree, hedge and bulb planting, footpath clearance and woodland management at Kett’s Park.

Currently we are collaborating with South Norfolk Council and Wymondham Town Council with the view to implementing projects to improve and enhance local green spaces, including creating wildflower areas and tree planting.

If you are interested in volunteering, attending our activities or generally interested in what we are doing visit www.greeningwymondham.org and/ or facebook page Greening Wymondham. 41 Animated Days Out in Wymondham One app, two exciting trails.

Then, gradually, the importance of remembering those who had died for our freedom seemed to fade and people started to forget. Many still observed a two minutes silence on Remembrance Sunday, but for the majority, Remembrance appeared to be a thing of the past. In 1995, the Royal British Legion launched a campaign to reinstate the two minutes silence. The British public and people throughout the Commonwealth, and many other countries worldwide, have welcomed back this observance.

When you wear your poppy this year, you will be not only remembering but also helping improve people’s lives. In contributing to the Poppy Appeal, you are saying your own thanks to those who paid for our peace and freedom with their lives.

The money from the Poppy Appeal is used by the Legion to look after and provide help for service personnel, veterans and their families. The Legion has six care homes; provides support for carers; independent living support; support with physical and mental well- being; financial support; it gives help where help is needed and offers the support of a strong organisation to frail and vulnerable individuals. Today, the Royal British Legion produces over 40 million poppies a year.

The British Legion was granted royal status in 1971 and extended their membership to serving members of Her Majesty’s Forces, as well as ex-service personnel, in 1981. Now, membership is open to anyone who wants to make a difference.

New Big C Boutique in Wymondham

The team at local cancer charity, Big C, spent time busy behind- the-scenes during the lockdown closures creating a new concept Boutique fashion recycling shop, which is located adjacent to the charity’s Furniture and Craft Emporium in Allenbrooks Way in Wymondham.

The new boutique offers premium and popular brands of clothing, showcased in a well-presented environment offering a lovely in-store experience.

Laverne Colk, Retail Operations Manager at Big C said, “We recently needed to relocate our shop from Wymondham town centre and this presented the opportunity to create a new-style store on the site of our emporium which we think will really appeal to local shoppers.

We are lucky enough to be donated some fantastic quality clothing and accessories as well as sometimes very special designer and unique vintage one-off items. The Boutique is a new way for people to donate and buy higher-end clothing at bargain prices and support local people in our community affected by cancer. We hope it’s somewhere people will enjoy returning to often.”

Clothing labelled for the Big C Boutique can be dropped at the signposted donation point on-site at Allenbrooks Way in Wymondham.
