Q: What is Google’s Exposure Notification API and how will it help combat COVID-19?

A: Since COVID-19 can be transmitted through close proximity to infected individuals, it’s critical to quickly notify people if they may have been exposed. Exposure Notifications are alerts that people can receive on their phones to let them know they’ve been exposed to someone diagnosed with COVID-19.

The Exposure Notification API is the technical foundation built by Google and Apple for public health authorities, that allows them to build their own digital apps that make use of the exposure notifications by working reliably across Android phones and iPhones.

● Using (BLE) technology allows public health authorities to quickly and effectively alert people that they may have been exposed and transmit authoritative information about recommended steps.

● Using technology, and this API specifically, we can reduce the burden on public health staff by unlocking the ability to quickly scale their efforts.

● Through close cooperation and collaboration with developers, governments and public health providers, we hope to harness the power of technology using a privacy-protective design.

Care19 Diary Q: What is the Care19 Diary App?

A: The Care19 diary app is a highly private and user controlled location tracing application that allows you to take an active role in slowing the spread of COVID-19 and make a difference in the health of your loved ones and your community. It allows you to curate where you have been so that you can more effectively and efficiently communicate your contacts and locations to our contact tracers if you are COVID-19 positive.

Q: Why did we introduce the Care19 Diary application?

A: One of the most effective tools that we have in our battle against COVID-19 is the ability to isolate people who have contracted the disease and to identify others they came in contact with so they can isolate as well. This is effective because it reduces the spread of this very contagious virus. The more effective we are at identifying people who have had exposure to the virus the better we will be able to flatten the curve and reduce the spread in our communities. This application will help us be more effective at contact tracing. The sooner we have better data the sooner we will be better at saving lives.

Q: How do I know you won’t use the information about my location in Care19 Diary inappropriately?

A: The application does not have any information that is tied to an individual person. Only if an individual does test positive will they be asked to provide their permission to access their location history to aid the interview process.

Q: How will the information gained make a difference?

A: The information will be used by our contact tracing teams, who review all the recent contacts and locations from each person who has tested positive for COVID-19. The data will be used to help the interviewer remind the person infected with COVID-19 where they have been recently to help them identify others they may have been in contact with.

Q: Will my information in Care19 Diary be shared?

A: Your information is 100% anonymous. In the event you test positive for the virus you can consent to make your information available at your discretion to the Department of Health

Q: Why should I download Care19 Diary? A: By downloading the apps, you are taking an active role in slowing the spread of COVID-19 and making a difference in the health of your loved ones and your community.

Q: What is the difference between Care19 Diary and Care19 Alert? A: The applications are complementary.

The Care19 Diary application is helpful even if nobody around you is using the application. It helps you remember where you have been so that you can provide more accurate information to a contact tracer if you test positive for Covid-19. With the history of where you have been you are more likely to remember the people you have been close to, and the location history is important for the investigative process that contact tracers perform.

Care19 Alert is extremely private and it helps to notify those people who may not be identified during the contact tracing process that they could have been exposed. Care19 Alert requires that both people in an interaction are using the application. So even if you don’t know a person or that you were around them they can be notified if you test positive. Care19 Alert helps us get more people notified to take precautionary measures than we can capture with the current contact tracing efforts.

Q: Why should I download both Care19 Alert and Care19 Diary?

A: By installing both applications you maximize the number of people who can be notified that they have been exposed if you become positive. Early notification is very important because it helps significantly reduce the spread of the virus. We don’t want to shut down our economy, but we do want to minimize the risk to our high risk populations, and installing both of the Care19 applications will help us do that together with our contact tracing and testing efforts.

Q: Since restoring my iPhone from an iCloud backup or resetting my iPhone, Exposure Notification is not working. How can I recover the app?

A: Right now, possible recovery paths require the user to take action. There are three ways to recover: 1) Turn off Exposure Notifications (in Settings > Exposure Notifications), then open the app to go re-onboard; 2) Delete, reinstall and launch the app; 3) Set the region as active. To do this, the user should go into Settings > Exposure Notifications > No Active region > your region in the Authorized Regions section > tap “Set As Active Region”. Then launch the app.
