Editor’s Comments: Well the comprehensive spending review thankfully left the major rail projects untouched, albeit some will be delayed, but unfortunately fares will rise yet again. What was that policy about switching from car to rail ! Still it continues to be interesting times on the national network. In my latest trip down south I took advantage of the ScotRail Club55 (I’m old enough now) coupled with the overnight sleeper for the first time, which was interesting for various reasons (article to appear later). As you will see elsewhere I managed to witness one of the Cl.380 test runs, which initially ran into trouble and were temporarily suspended, happily now resumed with entry into service imminent. More re-liveries have appeared with one-offs on a Pendolino and a Voyager together with further silver liveried East Coast stock and the umpteenth South Eastern Trains combination of white, lilac and dark blue. The Cl.172s on the Gospel Oak – Barking are now in regular service displacing the 150/1 which have moved to the west country, The Cl.313/2s are also now in regular use in East Sussex, with new Coastway picture vinyls being applied. Plus the first Cl.379 has appeared and will go for testing in the Czech Republic before UK testing in January 2011. There is so much happening, I have had trouble fitting it all in whilst maintaining a balance of articles, some of the new liveries will be held over until next month.

Two more preserved lines are close to being reconnected to the national network, both in the south east. The northern extension of the Bluebell Railway now boasts a platform south of the network rail station at East Grinstead (the opening was mentioned in Traffic & Traction News last month) and agreements are now in place to bring the Spa Valley Railway into the network rail station at Eridge. (see Preservation News – Building Projects 1 & 2).

To cap off a brilliant first year publishing our own books, we can announce that the first 2011 books will be out imminently, the second edition of Wagon Book and a third edition of the Combine. Both have been brought up to date, so get your orders in now, see page 6 for details and a look at the covers. The 2011 series of books will produced with blue covers to aid differentiation from 2010.

With my membership hat on can I please make the following pleas:

• can all members to read the various notes below on membership, particularly with regard to renewal payments. I regularly amend these notes so please do not take them for granted each month. The only way credit card payments can be taken is via the website NOT by telephone, whatever you previously did as this was only provided via HB publications and was stopped a year ago. For those who can only contact me by telephone and wish a quick response, please ring my mobile rather than leave a message, the latter being fine for non urgent matters. PLEASE remember we are all volunteers running ICRS and it is rather galling to be ‘accused’ of not being immediately responsive to some members. The very nature of providing interesting articles and news, I hope, requires a lot of travel around the UK...therefore I am not always going to be available at the end of a telephone or at a keyboard. However when travelling I am always contactable via my mobile given out when ringing my landline.

• please continue to provide a home landline contact telephone number, if possible, as many are now only listing a mobile on renewal forms. Clearly if I need to contact you then mobile rates cost the society more, especially if it is during the day. On the same vein, email addresses often change when changing service providers. So for those in that position, please remember to let me know. Both the above points also apply if changing address, though I appreciate one or other may not be known until after moving.

• please be careful when renewing by PayPal as several members are accidentally choosing the NEW member option, which is often confusing me. It will be obvious you have the wrong option as there will no box to add membership number. Also to reiterate last month’s plea, please make sure you provide your home address and email in the notes box, but ONLY if different from the PayPal account.

• one minor point but one which allows me to be less formal when contacting you is to remember to provide your first name on your renewal form or PayPal renewal. It also helps if you indicate if you use another name to your first, for use on your membership card etc. 3 One membership landmark was recently reached with all joint members of whom there are now 138, being put onto the same renewal date with GBBG. This has been an extra task I set myself this last year but as those affected will know it was often to your benefit.

Warley National Model Railway Exhibition, NEC Birmingham: Please note, though not a ‘real’ railway event we are going to have a stand at this 2 day show on the 20th – 21st November, to promote membership and sell our books including our two new 2011 editions. Carl and myself should be there all weekend, with Mark at some point so if any members are going please visit us, we may even rope you in so we can go to the loo !!

UK Pocket Book 2011 (UKRS01) Cover Competition: For the ICRS UK Pocket Book 2010 we asked Members if they had photos of the new Class 70 locomotives that we could use on the front cover. Member Brian Derricote submitted the successful photo. This year we would like to offer all Members the opportunity to submit photos that they think would be appropriate for the front cover of UKRS01. The lucky winner will receive a free copy of the UKRS01 when it is released in February/March 2011.

Requirements: Clear sharp images only please. • Ideally photo must be provided as a high resolution (4 Megapixel or greater) digital image. Or it can be a scanned image of a photo or slide. Slightly wonky or dark images can be improved as can poles spouting from engine roofs, so don’t worry if you think a good shot is so ‘ruined’. • Subject must be a loco or feature a loco very prominently. • Subject must be topical or newsworthy and have been taken in 2010. • Subject must be listed within the book. Rules: • Only ICRS Members may enter this competition and you must own the copyright of any photos you submit. • All entries must be submitted either via email to [email protected] or on a CD by post to ICRS, 14 Partridge Gardens, Waterlooville, PO8 9XG. • ICRS Officials will be the judges whose decision is final. • Closing date for entries is 30th November 2010.

When submitting photos please ensure you provide your name, address and membership number as well as full details of the subject, date, working as appropriate and a reason why you feel it to be topical or newsworthy. All submissions must comply with the requirements listed above.

The winning entry will be announced in the January 2011 edition of Tracks.

Our updated UK Combine Summer Edition 2010 has virtually sold out, as has the 2010 Wagon Book. Consequently new 2011 editions are being printed and will be available imminently (covers shown on page 7). Please note the individual books that make up the Combine ie. Locomotives, Diesel Units and Electric Units and the UK Name Directory and Irish Railways are small print runs, so if you don’t want to miss out, order yours now. The individual books have not been produced recently and the latter Unit books have additional carriage number to unit number cross ref tables, not found in the Combine and are very useful.

The success of the book sales has benefited the club directly, increasing the size of Tracks and is allowing us to contemplate further improvements and other books. Additionally an eagerly awaited updated Ultimate Sighting File is also in preparation and will combine all locos into one book rather than the 3 previously published. So please keep supporting your society with your purchases or encouraging friends to do so or better still join.

Copies of all books can be ordered via the website or direct from Carl Watson, prices below. See rear cover to see pictures of book covers.

In preparation to connect the Spa Valley Railway network rail at Eridge, signalling work is being finalised at Groombridge. The signal box is nearly complete and a two arm bracket signal has been installed opposite. Further signals (awaiting arms), the Down Advanced Starting Signal and the Up Starting Signal have been erected in the loop south of the station. A further Up Home Signal is in place on Birchden bank, the current limit of operation. The photos below, taken at Groombridge at the Diesel Event on 16th October, show the progress made since the last report in Feb 2009, page 22.

7 Ramblings of a Rail Enthusiast by David Spencer - 1963 Part 6

Someone said that in the spring a young man’s fancy turned out to be a golf ball, but in my case it was the summer. I had always played a lot of pitch and putt and ventured onto the local Municipal golf course. We used to take it in turns to cycle the four miles to the golf course at 06.00 to book a tee time for around 10.00 then cycle back to tell the others (no telephones in those dates let alone mobiles!) On the 11th August I spent time with the young lady who was to become my wife, although at that time she was the sister of an old school mate. My next and only railway trip in September was also my first adventure overseas and one of the perks of railway employment was the free passes.

So on the 27th September I travelled down to London behind D1013 then behind D6718 on the Harwich Boat train from Liverpool Street. This was just a weekend toe in the water trip and on arrival at Hook of Holland the harbour station was, unlike today, very much alive and international trains ran daily following the arrival of the ferry, like the Rheingold Express, The Scandinavia Express, loco 1216 and The Loreley Express, loco 1110.

1110 1216 + 1213 Hook of Holland, 28 September 1963 Hook of Holland, 28 September 1963

I also noted two diesels in the 22XX range on pw trains and I then travelled into Rotterdam on a dog head EMU 728. At Rotterdam Central it was busy, with trams outside and dog head EMUs inside before I caught an Amsterdam to Paris train. Haulage was 1308 as far as Roosendaal and class 22 122 206 (see photo opp) on the Antwerp Ost (no DVTs and reversals in Antwerp Central in those days) and a walk across town photographing trams on the way and my first sight of the magnificent palace that is Antwerp Central.

All Belgian stock was in the old numbering system (not that I knew any better… it was all new to me) and I took a few photos before another EMU took me on to Brussels and passing Scharbeek shed where I saw lots of steam. I went straight back out and got permission to enter.

Four classes were represented, 2-8-0s in the 29XXX and 381xx series and 0-6-0Ts in 580XX series and an 0-8-0T 53089 together with several of what was to become class 8000 diesels plus a few others.

58023 Scharbeek depot, 28 September 1963

Back to Brussels Midi and an EMU to Luxembourg, managing to photo the odd steam on the way at Namur and Jemelle. On arrival I took just one photo of a TEE unit on the Edeleweiss Express when my camera jammed and the rest is just a memory. I had diesel hauled trips to and from Kautenbach with a steam return trip on the Wiltz branch it was a 2-10-0 Kreislog. According to my note I went round Luxembourg shed as well but have no recollection and of course no photos. I spent the night on the steps of Radio Luxembourg and mused on the fact that I got better reception at home than I did outside their studios….like many of that generation I spent hours with a tranny glued to my ear on 208, ed. My return to Brussels was behind an electric loco and being perverse I went back via Lille and on to Calais on slow trains rather than a fast electric to Ostend. I had a diesel loco to Tournai an EMU to Lille and steam to Calais. Sadly to my regret I had no interest in foreign stock then, so haven't a clue what sort. all photos by Dave Spencer (to be cont)

9 Location ‘Spot’light Update by Trevor Roots

GLASGOW CENTRAL STATION

Following on from the update in February 2010 (pages11-12) platforms 12 & 13 have been completed and are in use. They are not as long as the platforms either side so providing a wide open area between the bufferstops and the main concourse / access to low level lines. This was put to good use on the evening on 12th October when Scotland hosted Spain for a world cup qualifier. Barriers were used to provide a continuous queuing system for fans to join the constant shuttles around the Cathcart circle (for Hampden Park).

156512 in platform 13, 12 October 2010 12 October 2010

There is one unfortunate problem, which I’m unsure if or how it will be resolved, in that there is about a 50mm height difference between the track in platform 14 and the new platform 13. A temporary wooden platform surface has been laid to the southern half of platform 14 (the length of a 3 car unit from the bufferstop), which creates a ramped step. The back edge is protected by temporary barriers as can be seen in the photos overleaf. Notwithstanding that issue, the overall appearance of the new platforms and their approach through the south arch is very smart. Platform 11a has gone, as have the cabins surrounding the bases of the arch (see photo on page 22, Mar 2008).

However the narrowing of the original platform 11 beyond the arch towards the River Clyde has meant this is no longer used, with passengers barred. This applies equally to enthusiasts and what was a good spotting / photography position is no longer available. (I did sneak out to take the view opposite). Not being able to go beyond the arch restricts visibility to the south.

This does mean that the end of platforms 9 & 10 is now the only central platform that extends out south of the trainshed and is now the best spot. However the unobstructed view across the new platforms to platforms 14 & 15 does allow new photographic opportunities (see overleaf).

10

The temporary barriers protecting the raised platform 14 can be seen in the photo above alongside 334024 and in the left hand photo, with 334015 in new platform 13. Both taken on 27 October 2010

Willesden Junction: Further to the last update, June 2010 page 9, platforms 4 & 5 have been extended across the low level lines and the connecting walkway is in use. At the time of my visit, work was still underway to finish off the connecting stairs and subway, which leads off this walkway to the low level lines.

11 As mentioned in the last update the extended platforms do now offer new photographic opportunities as well as better views of the North London line and the rear of Willesden depot and the adjacent low level lines (see photos below). This is because they now extend out beyond the low level lines.

Outside the new entrance is taking shape and I for one look forward to the new area that will be created between King’s Cross and St Pancras Int.

Bluebell Railway: As mentioned last month the Bluebell Railway opened its new platform at East Grinstead on 4th September. It is not connected to East Grinstead station, so passengers will have to walk along the access road to Sainsbury store. However access may alter before the northern extension becomes fully operational. (all photos below taken on 22nd October 2010)

Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary – Part 2:

Magyar Államvasutak (Hungarian State Railways) MÁV: Hungary is a landlocked country on the major transport link between West and East Europe. The capital Budapest is roughly in the centre with the 4 main routes leading off in a rough X shape. The company MAV was established in 1868 and still uses the same name today. Today MÁV has 7,875km of track.

On alternative summer Saturdays a steam excursion leaves Budapest Nyugati for Estergom, which is the old capital and on the other Saturday it goes to Visegrad where there is a medieval castle. (see photos below)

24 The numbering system is quite straightforward. Diesels begin with ‘M’ and electrics with ‘V’. The first number refers to driving axles and the second number refers to the class. Then in the case of diesel- mechanical there are 3 serial digits and for diesel-hydraulic there are 4 digits. Electrics have 3 or 4 digit serial numbers. eg. M62 301 is a Diesel-mechanic Co-Co and V43 1234 is a Bo-Bo electric. For shunters, M2x is a B (0-4-0) and M3x is a C (0-6-0). Hungary is in the process of re-numbering their locomotives, using the full UIC numbering system with 4 digit class numbers similar to Austria. eg. class V43 will become 1143 and M44 will become 2444, the last 2 digits remaining the same. As the locomotives are re-numbered they now carry both old and new numbers. (see photos opp and below right)

Budapest-Hüvösvölgy System: This MÁV controlled system also known as the Children’s Railway, is a 760mm gauge line that runs from Széchenyi-hegy around the outskirts of the city to Hüvösvölgy. The 11.5km journey is normally hauled by B-B class Mk45s and occasionally in the summer a steam service runs using 0-8-0T 490 056 (see photo on opp page of classmate 490 053).

The depot is at Hüvösvölgy and dumped at the back is B class C50 No. GV3788, 3 July 2004

WAGON NEWS: Because the Great Central Railway (GCR) can allow double-track working, more wagons and railway equipment are being tested here, like the new DBS HLA’s 82.70.6956.000 & 001 (Fabfnps) part of the order of 12 new wagons being built by WH Davis which are a replacement for MAR17701-17712. Also at the GCR were two interesting 45ft platform IDA twin container flats 32.70.4501.000 & 001 on test for WH Davis.

28 WAGON REVIEW by Martin Hall:

A more unusual subject is covered this month.

Redundant Steam Locomotive Tenders: In some areas of the country the water is harder than in others, so the water supplied for use by steam locomotives was treated to remove impurities so that the boilers did not need such frequent wash- outs. The sediments and sludge collected had to be disposed of and a number of tenders from withdrawn steam locomotives were used as sludge carries. In depots these tenders were often used as water carriers or later in the sixties, as oil containers.

Now although they were locomotive tenders they could travel in an ordinary freight train marshalled between conventional wagons. Others were re-built with a plough at one end, given extra ballast and used as snowploughs and so many tenders lasted long after the locomotive it belonged to and some even entered preservation as spares or replacements.
