    For Immediate Release Contacts: Aaron Sickman (651) 602-6009 Tuesday, June 9, 2020 Megan Kogut (651) 312-3439 Emily Yang (651) 602-6034 MINNESOTA WILD GOALTENDER ALEX STALOCK NOMINATED FOR BILL MASTERTON MEMORIAL TROPHY SAINT PAUL, Minn. – The Twin Cities chapter of the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association (PHWA) today announced the nomination of Minnesota Wild goaltender Alex Stalock for the National Hockey League’s (NHL) Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy. The trophy is presented annually to the player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey. Stalock, 32 (7/28/87), posted a 20-11-4 record with a 2.67 goals-against average (GAA), a .910 save percentage (SV%) and four shutouts in 38 games played (36 starts) and became the fifth goaltender in franchise history to record 20 wins in a season. He set career highs in games played, games started, wins, shutouts (ranked T-5th in the NHL), minutes played (2,177), shots against (1,082) and saves (985). Per NHL Stats, the six-foot, 200-pound native of Saint Paul, Minn., is the seventh different Minnesota-born goalie to reach 20-plus wins in a single season. Stalock tied his career best making seven consecutive starts from Feb. 25-March 7, made a season-high 40 saves at San Jose on March 5 and recorded a career-high, four-game win streak Feb. 21-28. The left-glove netminder registered a 26-save shutout in his first start of the season on Oct. 14 at Ottawa, the second time in his career he recorded a shutout in his first start of a single season and became the fourth Minnesota-born goalie in NHL history to do so.

    72 DIVISION I Ice Hockey DIVISION I 2002 Championship Highlights Gophers Golden in Overtime: Perhaps it was a slight tweak in tradition that propelled Minnesota to the championship April 6 in St. Paul, Minnesota. Not since 1987 had a non-Minnesotan laced up the skates for the Gophers. The streak ended with Grant Potulny, a native of Grand Forks, North Dakota. Potulny scooped up a loose puck and beat Maine goaltender Matt Yeats, 16:58 into overtime, to bring the Gophers their first championship since 1979. When the puck hit the back of the net, the majority of the 19,324 on hand – a Frozen Four record – erupted. The three-session combined attendance at the Xcel Energy Center also set a Frozen Four record, totaling 57,957, to break the mark set at the 1998 championship in Boston’s Fleet Center (54,355). With both teams trading chances in the first two periods, goaltending was a key issue. Boston College’s Scott Clemmenson and North Dakota’s Karl Goehring made several key saves. The Eagles managed two goals and the North Dakota goalie Karl Goehring made 51 saves in the Frozen Four, Sioux one after two periods. earning him all-tournament team honors. North Dakota’s Lee Goren — nicknamed “Scorin’ Goren” — posted two third-period goals to help the Sioux to the title. The game-winner scored by North Dakota’s Jason Ulmer, came with 5:34 left in the game. With the championship, North Dakota trails Michigan for the overall lead. The Wolverines have claimed nine national championships. All-tournament team honors went to Sioux netminder Goehring, defense- men Mike Mottau (Boston College) and Mike Commodore (North Dakota) and forwards Bryan Lundbohm (North Dakota) and Jeff Farkas (Boston College).
