Boys for School High Jeppe NEWSLETTER 02/2019

Speaking of serving on committees, our Representative Council of Learners (RCL) elections were held recently and I would like to congratulate Tameez Jhetam on being nominated as Chairman of the RCL. I’m sure he will do a wonderful job in leading the school and working alongside our prefect body.

In closing, I would like to offer my congratulations to our 2nd XI cricket team who this week won their Jonny Waite competition as well as my best wishes to the 1st XI who are in the semi final and play next week. It is also the 60th Anniversary regatta of our rowing club this weekend and we wish them a wonderful day of rowing on Saturday.

Dale Jackson HEADMASTER

NEW STAFF

We are delighted to welcome new staff to the Jeppe. These gents have already made a big impact at the school and we would like to officially welcome them to Jeppe.

Joshua Allan

Joshua Allan joined the permanent staff this year after being on Jeppe’s teacher intern programme for two years.

His has a Batchelor of Education degree, specialising in the intermediate and senior phase.

As an old boy and someone who has worked here for two years, Josh is very familiar with the Jeppe campus, but he says he is still blown away by the school. “The school, the boys and the staff are amazing,” he said. “It's a great privilege to start my teaching career in such an incredible place as this. Every day is exciting.”

Looking forward, he feels that he can leave a lasting, positive impression on the learners he comes into contact with, he will have done his job.

“My ambition is to leave the learners I interact with better prepared and equipped for their lives ahead,” he said.

Vincent Jordaan

Vincent Jordaan is a housemaster at Droste and is teaching English and Geography to grades 8 and 9. He is fully committed to the school’s extra-mural programme. He is coaching cricket at the moment and is looking forward to the winter sports season.

He has a BA degree in Sports Psychology and Post Graduate Certificate in Education, specialising in English. He previously taught at St David’s Marist Inanda.

He said he found the staff at Jeppe most welcoming. “The staff is mostly young, dynamic and filled with energy,” he said.

“I have really enjoyed the drive of each staff member to become the best in their own spaces. That will take Jeppe to new heights in the near future.

His aim for the year is to help everyone at the school reach their particular goals. To do that will take hard work in every space that am involved in,” he said.

EDUCATOR ACHIEVEMENTS

Ms. Stephanie Craig was named the top IT Educator in Mr Gilbert De Villiers has been selected as the Gauteng’s District D9 for the third year in a row U21 Southern Gauteng Hockey Assistant Coach

NEW ITC LESSON

Jeppe’s declared intention to teach our boys 21st Century skills and prepare them for the world they are going into has taken a big step forward this year with the introduction of a weekly lesson for the grade 9’s entitled RBS IT Skills.

“It’s basically a 21st Century Skills preparation programme,” said Mr Rob Faltermeier, the school’s ITC and Innovation Director. “We aren’t teaching computer literacy or device competency, the boys can generally operate the machinery. Instead, it’s about how to behave in the online space. It’s about how to use the cloud to best benefit, about digital literacy and “netiquette”, and how to use social media responsibly.”

MIDMAR MILE

The weekend of February 9th and 10th saw a break from sport at Jeppe, with two exceptions – the rowers went to Roodeplaat because it was the 60th anniversary celebration of our friends, Parktown Boys’ High; and a group of swimmers went to swim the Midmar Mile. They had been training for it, and that’s a date that can’t be changed.

So, a group of 17 boys and three teachers made the trip to Howick last Friday, spent two nights down there and swam the mile twice. Except for Branden Willows, who crossed the dam eight times to collect funds for the Choc Foundation for the second year in a row.

“It was a great experience,” said Matt du Preez, our deputy head boy who went along and swam his first Midmar Mile. “I’m sure everyone who was there would agree that we had a lot of fun, and that it was way better than having the weekend off.”

They travelled down by bus, stayed in chalets, braaied their meals, swam the race as a team on Saturday and as individuals on Sunday and even managed to take a look at the famous Howick Falls before making the trip back on Sunday.

“My time was 28 minutes, which was pretty good I thought,” Matthew said. “Our coach, Mr Edwards did it in 20, though, which was excellent. NEWSLETTER 02/2019

BRANDEN SWIMS 8 MILES

Branden Willows spends a fair amount of time in training. Three hours a day, all year round, and when the heaters at Ellis Park don’t work, they keep going, in the cold.

All that hard work has paid off for him. He made the Central Gauteng team as an open water swimmer and last year he earned South African junior colours for lifesaving.

In open water swimming he has a different goal. “I use it to make my contribution to those in need, so I swam the eight mile challenge at Midmar for the second time this year and next year I am going to do the 16 miles.” What that means is that he swam Midmar four times last Saturday, and four on Sunday, with people sponsoring him, and that money went to his chosen charity, the Childhood Cancer Foundation (Choc). Next year, he’ll do it four times on each day.

DAVID BLOCK

During a recent assembly, the boys were treated to a talk by well known astronomer, Professor David Block, who came to share some of his wisdom and experiences. Professor Block spoke about the importance of connections and encouraged the boys to spend more time with their thoughts and not always defaulting to electronic devices. It was wonderful to hear of his many travel ex- periences and adventures.

CHESS BOARD

Varsity College kindly donated R10 000 to our school to put to use where needed. An outdoor chess board was built outside Sable Prep where teams of boys can be seen enjoying a game. A massive Thank You to Varsity College for your kind donation!

WESTVILLE EXCHANGE This year we continue our annual fixture against Westville Boys’ High School in . This is a wonderful opportunity for all of our winter sporting teams to travel as a school, be hosted by Westville, and play against them in a range of sporting fixtures. Although teams have not been selected - we would like to see as many of our boys have the opportunity to join in on this special fixture. This is in line with our wish to give all of our boys an opportunity to tour.

If you have not submitted payment or an indemnity form for your son/ward, please contact [email protected] for more in- formation as well as an indemnity form.
