19TH ANNUAL ANDROSCOGGIN RIVER SOURCE TO THE SEA

19TH ANNUAL ANDROSCOGGIN RIVER SOURCE TO THE SEA Paddle the Androscoggin River Trail WHEN: July 11-August 10, 2014 WHO: Anyone who wants to go paddling, learn about the river and have fun. WHERE: All along the 170 mile Androscoggin River FAMILY DAYS: Easy paddling and a limited number of kayaks will be provided at no cost for first time paddlers. Reservations required by calling 207-754-8158 after June 15th. FMI: www.androscogginwatershed.org or search ARWC Maine.

The Nineteenth Annual Androscoggin River Source to the Sea “Healthy Environment—Healthy Lifestyle” begins in the Umbagog National Wildlife Refuge north of Errol, and ends in Merrymeeting Bay in Brunswick, ME where the Androscoggin meets the Kennebec River and empties into the Atlantic Ocean. The event is organized as a series of day trips along the river. Highlights include evening paddles, healthy foods, family days, music, hiking, standup paddle-board, as well as educational sessions on native plant species, fish habitat, ornithology, weather, aquatic insects, healthy nutrition and river ecology.

PADDLE one day, multiple days or all twenty days. Leaders are provided. LEARN about the river, its history, area geology, river wildlife, birds and fishing. CELEBRATE this natural resource and its contribution to the watershed’s economy.

For logistical and safety reasons PRE-REGISTRATION IS STRONGLY ENCOURAGED . Sign up by registering on the website, androscogginwatershed.org. Although there is no fee to participate, a $10.00 donation is suggested at the time of registering. Donations will also be accepted at the put in site on each event day.

Is the river difficult? Most sections of the river are flat water with a gentle current to move us along. Some sections have rapids and require more experience. Check the website for more detail on each day’s paddling conditions.

What do I need to bring? Participants must bring their own canoe, kayak, paddle-board, lifejackets for every person on the water and paddles. Lunch, and extra clothing for cold or wet weather are recommended. Lunches will be offered on a few days.

Check out www.androscogginwatershed.org for updates and additional information. Also look for a few exciting off-river activities.

Overnight accommodations: Campgrounds are available over much of the river. There are also B&B’s, hotels and motels available in most communities. Check out local chamber of commerce web sites. Sponsors offering accommodations include the Mahoosuc Inn, Bethel Outdoor Adverture (campground) and Sunday River Resort.
