DAK Lights Show founder, David Kinder, has plans to expand and relocate his award-winning Christmas light show in Pulaski County. A Kickstarter account has been established to help him reach his anticipated funding of $14,000.00 by July 25. To enable the relocation to happen before Thanksgiving this year, Kinder has launched a Kickstarter Crowd Funder effort to help cover the anticipated costs of electrical upgrades at the new location. The light show requires about 100 amps at 120 volts maximum capacity. For those unfamiliar with crowd funders, the recipi- ent (DAK Lights Show for example), sets a targeted amount of funds they need for a project; and individuals or corporations can contribute funds toward that project. If the targeted amount 808-3949 of funds is not reached within 30-days, then the recipient does not receive any funds; and the contributed funds return to the donors. DAK Lights Show is hoping to receive $14,000 in funds by Wednesday, July 25th. Kickstarter contributions can be made at: https://www.kick- starter.com/projects/daklights/d ak-lights-2018 "Although there are other hol- iday light shows in the New River Valley area, people have to travel outside the county to see them. Before the tongue-wagging from Internet trolls gets going, it should be noted that I do not now nor have I had any desire to be a Supreme Court justice. My call- ing is to be a lawyer/legislator. But having practiced law before juries, judges, and other tribunals, I recog- nize what the country misses when its highest court excludes such experiences. The Court could encompass broader experiences beyond jury trial, too. Of course, the early Republic did not have a farm team of appellate court judges ready to go for the Supreme Court. John Jay was a politician and diplomat before George Washington appointed him as the first Chief Justice, and he returned to diplomacy and politics after he left the bench. Before Virginia's John Marshall became Chief Justice in 1801, he served in numerous political offices, including the House of Delegates. He was Secretary of State when President John Adams named him to the bench. Marshall drew on his practical expe- riences in addition to the legal education he received at the hands of George Wythe to become one of the most influential justices of all time. OPEN FORUM No reason to call police To the editor,

Hi. My name is Wes. I'm a vendor at the Tuesday farmer's mar- ket. This week, I witnessed the civilian use of police to harass peo- ple just because they looked shady to someone. The event in question was the Open Mic Night market on July 17th, right here in Pulaski. At about 5 o'clock, after an hour with nobody onstage, a brave soul with nothing but his wit and guitar came to play for us, and took his place in front of a pair of micro- phones, with an open invitation for anyone to join him to sing. Shortly after he began, a couple of gentlemen made their way over and stood just off the edge of the patio, keen on watching his per- formance. If you can judge a person by their looks, life hasn't been kind to them, but then, such is Appalachia. Life has been hard for most of us for the better part of 400 years. It's a historically poor and oppressed region. Within minutes, two police officers strolled past the vendors, and within a minute, came back the other way. It was clear they were looking for someone, and this thought is further reinforced by the fact that after they had effectively harassed these gentlemen, the officers walked off, not to be seen again that evening. Generally, I tend to see a bicycled officer or two riding around, chatting up the locals, and occasionally grabbing some groceries or a bite to eat. They were the only police presence at the market that day, and only there to talk to those two men. Why do we tolerate this behavior in our society? Just because these gentlemen look different from you does not mean they warrant police harassment. Nothing about them seemed even remotely threatening. Everyone I talked to about the incident was downright outraged that someone had the nerve to call the cops on a pair of community members while they were watching a live performance. What is this, the town of Elmore City, Oklahoma? They weren't even dancing, and you called the authorities? How dare you insult our community like this? Shame on you, caller. You are the real stain on our society, not them. D. Sometimes other people - especially those who might be someone's co- worker - will pick up on things you missed during a formal interview. You might also think about scheduling a meeting with each of the candidates off- site. People tend to be more at ease in an informal setting, like a restaurant or coffee shop, and this could lead you to discover new things. Sometimes, a more relaxed setting allows you to see the whole person, and decide if you like who they really are. It can also lead someone to say things that might cause you to hire them - or not hire them. Something we always do at my company is a final inter- view over dinner. Spouses are invited to this meeting, and we encourage them to speak into the situation. I'm not talking about a big test, just conversa- tion and a friendly, family atmosphere. You can tell a lot about a person by how they talk to, and interact with, their spouse. And sometimes a spouse, if there is one, will catch things you missed during other interviews. I'm impressed that you're tak- ing this seriously, and devoting some real time and energy to hiring. Your thoughtfulness leads me to think you'll make the right decision! -Dave
