ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Expertise Although formally I am an Professor at the University of Malta, over the last few years, I have gained a great deal of academic, research and managerial experience and competencies, both on a national as well as a European and international level in various spheres. Several of these have included key decision making positions of very important societal relevance, requiring the management of large budgets and leadership skills. My commitments have been wide reaching and extremely varied, cutting across a range of scientific, research, academic and administrative disciplines, allowing me to develop a unique assortment of skills and experiences. Some of these include: -Former Clinical Pharmacist at the major teaching hospital in Malta, omember of the Drugs and Therapeutics Committee and Medicinal Devices Committee of the Government Pharmaceutical Service, which provides pharmaceutical provisions to all the state health service in Malta. oInteractions with several other health care professionals, consultants, nursing staff etc. and hospital administrators -Obtained several scholarships and awards which led to research experience with top international research communities in Ireland, UK, Italy, Germany and US (Fulbright scholar)

22/12/2020 European Medicine Agency Page 3/20 -Undertaken and supervised key interdisciplinary research on various aspects of the incidence, pharmacokinetics and and treatment of epilepsy in specific populations and the newer antiepileptic drugs, especially within a small population setting such as Malta, in conjunction with the Department of Paediatrics and Department of Medicine at Mater Dei Hospital and the University of Malta, the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) and International Bureau of Epilepsy (IBE). -Outreach and advocacy work especially in the epilepsy sphere, since I have always believed that research should not remain blue sky research. oIn 1996, I founded the Caritas Malta Epilepsy Association. oIn 2007, I set up the Pharmacology Society of Malta. -My international status is now well acknowledged and I have been invited to sit on several International Committees such as: oScientific Committee of the Mediterranean Epilepsy Society, oInternational League against Epilepsy, oEuropean Federation of Pharmaceutical Sciences oUNESCO Forum of Women of the Mediterranean. oEUCARE EU concerted Action in Epilepsy oSecretary General, European Epilepsy Academy oVice-President (Europe) International Bureau for Epilepsy oMember, IBE/ILAE Joint Task Force, Epilepsy Research and Advocacy. oFormer expert of the EU European Medicines Agency on the Pharmacogenetics group in European Medicines Agency in London oInvited expert evaluator for EU Framework Research programmes.

-During my term as member of the Drugs and Therapeutics Committee and Medicinal Devices Committee of the Government Pharmaceutical Service, which provides pharmaceutical provisions to all the state health service in Malta, I obtained technical skills and knowledge about the quality, safety and of pharmaceutical products and devices. -Through my doctoral research, I obtained skills in chromatographic analysis (HPLC; GC/MS) specifically of drugs in biological fluids, in vivo animal epilepsy models and pharmacokinetic analysis using sparse data analysis software. -I also have obtained competencies with respect to EU regulatory requirements for quality control criteria for medicines and the importance of the predicative value of pharmacokinetic especially with respect to stereoisomeric pharmacovigilance and pharmacotoxicology in hospital formularies and the regulatory implications in national health services. -I have also acted as external adviser for the development of pharmacology computer learning packages developed by the UK PharmaCalogy network and contributed to the content of the Cal packages developed by the European Pharmacology Network Epharnet, co-ordinated by Dr Ian Hughes from University of Leeds. -I introduced post graduate taught degrees in pharmacology at the University of Malta . I wasalso a member of the GALENOS network, coordinated by the University of Saarbrucken Germany, which promotes a postgraduate degree in pharmaceutical sciences across 34 universities. -I have acted as a consultant on EU affairs to several key institutions in Malta, including local pharmaceutical manufacturing industry on the registration procedures for their medicinal products for animal and human use in line with EU regulatory bodies. -Participation in European Medicines Agency, Pharmacogenetics Working Party (PGWP) has led to increased relations and collaborations with colleagues in other national and international drug regulatory agencies such as ICH, FDA. -I have also been appointed over 60 times expert evaluator as well as expert reviewer for proposals submitted under various EU funding schemes: FP5, FP6 and FP7. These evaluations included the actions: Marie Curie Excellence Grants and Chairs, Life Sciences Genomics for Health, INCO Specific Support Actions, Ethics Review, Leonardo Projects, Erasmus Mundus, Quality of Life Measures, DG Transport and the Science and Society Young Scientists Contest and as Ethics

22/12/2020 European Medicine Agency Page 4/20 reviewer. oIn 2009 I was also selected as evaluator for proposals submitted under the prestigious IMI Innovative Medicines Initiative. oIn 2010 I was also appointed the first Maltese evaluator for the European Science Foundation (ESF) under the EUROCORES call.
