Going into the year, we had recently modernized the industry measuring stick - the Billboard 200 chart - to include track downloads and streamed songs in addition to traditional album sales. The new chart reflected how fans now consume music, and in 2015 they were consuming more than ever. Total consumption, including sales, streams and track downloads, was up, fueled by the continued surge of streaming, which nearly doubled last year. And yet the biggest music consumption story of the year was not even available on streaming services. We were awed by Adele’s record-crushing 25. We monitored daily activity across sales, streaming, airplay and social, and were thrilled to report on every new milestone she achieved, incredible by any measuring stick. We also “listened” to over 500,000 music consumers in 2015. We learned about their consumption behaviors and preferences. We learned about their social activity – how they engage with their favorite artists, and how they use it to follow festivals and discover new music. And importantly, we also showed brands the power and value of music fans; how to reach them, and how to connect with them.     “The Blueprint”--Jay-Z (2001) Added to the National Registry: 2018 Essay by Zack O’Malley Greenburg (guest post)* Original CD cover A son of Brooklyn’s notorious housing projects who became hip-hop’s first billionaire in 2019, Jay-Z is as close as it gets to the modern-day embodiment of the American dream. So it’s only fitting that “The Blueprint,” one of the most noteworthy albums of the aughts, is the first 21st century recording selected for the National Recording Registry. Jay-Z’s sixth studio album arrived on September 11, 2001, and could have been lost amid the ensuing wave of national mourning. Instead, “Blueprint” ended up as a soundtrack of sorts-- mirroring the heady mix of pride and paranoia that permeated the post-September 11th United States. A classic album in any era, fate deposited it just in time to mirror an American moment when wound-licking gave way to a defiant indomitability. At the time, Jay-Z’s foes included a burgeoning roster of rival rappers, most notably Queens native Nas (a challenger for the King of New York crown) and the justice system, which had placed Jay-Z in legal limbo over the attack of a producer thought to have bootlegged his prior album (Jay-Z would eventually receive probation). He was also years into a prescient Grammy boycott—“Blueprint” would later be shut out at music’s biggest night despite vast critical acclaim. Backed by a battalion of producers including Timbaland, Just Blaze and a young Kanye West, Jay-Z caps “Blueprint’s” opening salvo by pronouncing himself “God MC, me, Jay-Hova.” Though he slings a few barbs at Mobb Deep’s Prodigy, his real target is archrival Nas, who’d questioned Jay-Z’s underworld credentials in a radio freestyle that evolved into one of hip-hop’s most legendary verbal confrontations.

Abstract We model the dynamics of musical success of albums over the last half century with a view towards constructing musically well-balanced playlists. We develop a novel nonparametric Bayesian modeling framework that combines data of different modalities (e.g. metadata, acoustic and textual data) to infer the correlates of album success. We then show how artists, music platforms, and label houses can use the model estimates to compile new albums and playlists. Our empirical investigation uses a unique dataset which we collected using different online sources. The modeling framework integrates different types of nonparametrics. One component uses a supervised hierarchical Dirichlet process to summarize the perceptual information in crowd-sourced textual tags and another time-varying component uses dynamic penalized splines to capture how different acoustical features of music have shaped album success over the years. Our results illuminate the broad patterns in the rise and decline of different musical genres, and in the emergence of new forms of music. They also characterize how various subjective and objective acoustic measures have waxed and waned in importance over the years.

Elton John was born Reginald Kenneth Dwight in Pinner, Middlesex, England on March 25, 1947. Dwight began playing piano at age four and, when he was eleven, won a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music in London. After six years at school, he left in order to break into the music business. In 1961 he joined his first band, Bluesology, but left in 1966 because of creative differences with bandleader Long John Baldry. During this time Dwight had answered a Liberty Records advertisement for songwriters; and, though he failed the vocal audition, he was given a stack of lyrics written by Bernie Taupin, a young songwriter from Lincolnshire who had also answered the ad.
