HUELL HOWSER Wednesday, February 23, 2011 (Lunch Speaker) Topic: TBD
HUELL HOWSER Wednesday, February 23, 2011 (Lunch Speaker) Topic: TBD When Huell Howser moved to Los Angeles in 1981 from his home state of Tennessee to become a reporter for KCBS-TV in Los Angeles, he had no idea he’d fall in love…with California. His enthusiasm for his new home inspired the idea for the television series that started it all, California’s Gold. Huell had a simple idea: if he traveled the state with an open heart and an open mind, a microphone and a camera, he would uncover a treasure of California stories. "We operate on the premise that TV isn’t brain surgery. People’s stories are what it’s all about," says Howser. "If you have a good story, it doesn’t have to be overproduced. I want our stories to reveal the wonders of the human spirit and the richness of life in California, including its history, people, culture and natural wonders." A native of Tennessee, Huell began his television career at WSM-TV in Nashville after receiving his B.A. degree from the University of Tennessee, serving on the staff of a United States Senator and a stint in the U.S. Marine Corps. Howser later joined WCBS-TV in New York City as host of a magazine-style series. He then came to Los Angeles in 1981 to work as a reporter for KCBS-TV. Huell joined public television station KCET/Los Angeles in 1987 to produce "Videolog," a series of short programs featuring the stories of people from all walks of life. -

ONE PARTICULAR NEWSLETTER The Ophicial Publication of the Orange County Parrot Head Club Partying with a purpose for over 20 years! www.ocphc.org December 2016 Last Mango in Irvine for Jimmy Buffett & The Coral Reefer Band Jimmy Buffett and The Coral Reefer Band played for the last time at The Irvine Meadows Amphitheater in Irvine on Saturday, October 22nd. The OCPHC was the national host for The Last Mango in Irvine Party. Word of the party went out on the club Facebook page and a pre-concert tailgate was planned near the event. Several club members joined the official Club RV to help prepare for the party. Much to our surprise, more than 10 additional RVs from all across the country joined us to get ready and gear up for the concert. Our old friend Jimmy Groovy showed up in costume and added to the pre-concert fun. Once inside the parking lot, Jerry Gontang played to the huge crowd In This Issue around the OCPHC event site. A.J.’s famous Cheeseburgers in Paradise were on the grill all were partying just like Bubba does in Pg 1: Last Mango in Irvine preparation for the concert. Once inside the venue, Jimmy and the CRB did not disappoint. The 26 song set included a tribute to Jimmy’s Pg 2: Andy’s Irvine Letter friend, Glenn Frey of The Eagles, who recently passed away. The show concluded in appropriate fashion with an acoustic version Pg 3: Tilleritaville of Lovely Cruise. Several club members related to the fact that they saw the first and last Buffett shows at Irvine Pg 4-7: Tales From MOTM Meadows. -

8 Redefining Zorro: Hispanicising the Swashbuckling Hero
Redefining Zorro: Hispanicising the Swashbuckling Hero Victoria Kearley Introduction Such did the theatrical trailer for The Mask of Zorro (Campbell, 1998) proclaim of Antonio Banderas’s performance as the masked adventurer, promising the viewer a sexier and more daring vision of Zorro than they had ever seen before. This paper considers this new image of Zorro and the way in which an iconic figure of modern popular culture was redefined through the performance of Banderas, and the influence of his contemporary star persona, as he became the first Hispanic actor ever to play Zorro in a major Hollywood production. It is my argument that Banderas’s Zorro, transformed from bandit Alejandro Murrieta into the masked hero over the course of the film’s narrative, is necessarily altered from previous incarnations in line with existing Hollywood images of Hispanic masculinity when he is played by a Hispanic actor. I will begin with a short introduction to the screen history of Zorro as a character and outline the action- adventure hero archetype of which he is a prime example. The main body of my argument is organised around a discussion of the employment of three of Hollywood’s most prevalent and enduring Hispanic male types, as defined by Latino film scholar, Charles Ramirez Berg, before concluding with a consideration of how these ultimately serve to redefine the character. Who is Zorro? Zorro was originally created by pulp fiction writer, Johnston McCulley, in 1919 and first immortalised on screen by Douglas Fairbanks in The Mark of Zorro (Niblo, 1920) just a year later. -

The September 2000 issue includes a collection of observations on academic integrity and cheating, an article describing a history of opportunities for women in higher education, and editorial comments on a range of faculty issues. The December 2000 issue includes a brief history of the Faculty Association of California Community Colleges, describing the struggles of faculty in relationship to governance over the years; an article discussing issues surrounding 50 Percent Law compliance; and a commentary on failure across the state, from Chancellor's Office to local colleges, to respect participatory governance processes as mandated in AB1725. The March 2001 issue describes the heavy reliance of California Community Colleges on part-time faculty, most of whom do not get paid for meeting with students, preparing lessons, and grading papers. This issue also includes commentaries exploring the issues, rewards, and challenges associated with teaching part time.
