Ireland, Sneem. Sea, shore and predator

Area Sneem is the base of this fishing trip. It is located in the southwest of Ireland and can be reached from Cork airport in 2 hours or 4.5 hours from Dublin. The coast is rugged but the climate is very moderate as temperatures usually do not fall below 5º C. In the summer the average is around 20º C. These factors make that even palm trees thrive in this location. Besides the rugged coastline, the backcountry and is beautiful and offers many opportunities for fishing on the local rivers and lakes.

The village itself is picturesque and still offers the true atmosphere of yesteryear. No hurry, honest and hospitable people and beautiful surroundings ensure an unforgettable journey. If you go to a local pub in the evening you will feel right at home and will be warmly welcomed by the people. This is still the true Irish life.

You spend the night in the bed & breakfast with six double rooms which is run by a Dutchman with his Irish wife. He is also crazy about fishing and likes to help you on your way with good advise and together they provide perfect and family friendly hospitality. The rooms have their own shower, toilet, coffeemaker and TV. There is also a drying room for the fish clothes and stuff and also the possibility to freeze caught fish.

In addition, there is a general room on the ground floor where you can share your fishing stories with the other guests after a day of fishing. In addition, the local pubs of the village are a 3-minute walk away. They are highly recommended to experience Irish life.

Ann and Frans are the owners of this location. Ann makes excellent breakfasts and the duinners are organised for you at the local pub / restaurant. Frans is Dutch but has lived here for over 20 years and knows the region like the back of his hand. He will help you with advise to organize your fishing holiday as well as possible and based on your desires.

Fishing

The beauty of this location is that you have different possibilities to go fishing. Choose to do one type of fishing for several days in a row or choose all different types of fishing for each day. It does not matter, the choice is yours.

Freshwater Predator: On the local lakes Lough Allua, Curraghalicky lake, Inniscarra and Carrigadrohid lake it's good fishing for pike, perch and trout. But also eel and whitefish are among the possibilities. The lakes are an hour's drive away from Sneem, but they are certainly among the more unknown and unfished lakes and therefore offer good opportunities if you have your own rental car at your disposal. Accompanied by the local guide with boat you will be on the road and in "no time" you will be at the right spots and fishing with the right kinds of bait.

The most attractive option here is to book a guided day of fishing on Lough Allua from a traditional 5.5m long Irish fishing boat where there is plenty of room for 3 people. The boat is equipped with a 10 hp engine. Together with guide Greg you will have a great day fishing here and he will help you with all the tips for the spots and equipment. Greg is extremely helpful and has a ton of experience on his local water. Irish pike are known for their fighting spirit and inexhaustibility. As an alternative, you can of course take the boat out yourself on the lake. But the first day with Greg is an absolute must!

Freshwater Salmon: There are a number of opportunities for salmon fishing in the region. The first option lies directly in front of your accommodation and is the river Sneem. To be able to fish on the river Sneem you need a separate permit which is available per day, week and month. Good catches are reported throughout the year and this is a good option to give it a try.

The second option is Lough Currane. This lake is known for its good fishing. Here you can fish with or without a guide from the typical 5.5 metre long Irish fishing boats with practical 4 to 6 hp outboard motors. Lough Currane is large and offers many fishing opportunities. As well as salmon, there's grayling, trout and sea trout. The lake is connected to the sea by a river and salmon and sea trout migrate up here.

We advise you to go fishing the first day with the help of a guide because without a guide you will catch significantly less fish. For a second or more days you can take the boat yourself but a guide for the first day is an absolute must. The fishing is drifting along different depths with fly- or spinning rods. Also is done quite a lot as it is also very successful on this lake.

Coastal and rock fish: There are endless beaches here where you have more than enough opportunities to cast out your (beach) . In the region there are plenty of places to go. Whether it's along the rocks where you can fish for sea bass, pollack, wrasse and mackerel or from the beach for dab, plaice, turbot, sole, sea bass, doggies and more.

Or from one of the piers in the region, such as 'Blackwater Pier', if after a full day of fishing you want to go fishing in the evening.

A fun and valuable addition for the fishing holiday is to go fishing on the rock formations with the guidance of the local guide. The guide will take you to places you would never have found yourself. Since other people don't know where to find these spots either, you are almost always fishing alone and the fish will attack your spinners, woblers, shads, twisters but also with pieces of mackerel under the float. Think of sea trout, sea bass, wrasse, pollack, mackerel etc.

This is a spectacular and beautiful that will stay with you for a long time to come. Don't forget your beach rod to fish for ray, plaice and sea bass.

Sea fishing from the charter boat: Accompanied by Captain Jack O' Shea you will hunt for wrasse, coalfish, pollack, conger, ray, catfish, dogfish, sea bass, cod and you will also have a chance to catch skate and tope and blue shark.

The boat is an Interceptor 33 and is equipped with a 350 hp engine, GPS, , all safety equipment and of course all necessary permits within the framework of safety. Captain Jack was born here and will probably find his last resting place here as well. This man is part of this sea and knows how to find the fish like no other.

Fishing from the boat is practically always possible because Kenmare Bay is very sheltered. When the weather is not so good there are enough places to get the fish and when the weather is nice it is a coming and going of good cuttings through the warm Gulf Stream and the underwater structures. So there is seldom a day out and it is possible to rent the whole boat but cook to go along as a hiker.

Possible extra materials such as lead, leaders, lures etc. are available at the local host. Very handy because he knows exactly what you need! There is also an shop in the village of Sneem that can provide the necessary materials and information. It is always worthwhile to stop by and discuss local customs to get some extra information on the spot. Which fly is doing well in the last week or where is it being caught. The people here will be happy to help you. Make use of the local knowledge to further improve your fishing.

Material

For all types of fishing it is possible to rent equipment. But for every angler, it is best to fish with your own equipment. For freshwater pike and trout fishing, light spinning rods are perfect here. Reels with thin dyneema make fishing very pleasant because of the direct contact. Spinners, woblers, spoons and jerkbaits are the preferred materials. Don't forget to bring them in different sizes.

For salmon fishing on the river, it is useful to have a heavier spinning rod with the necessary lure shapes. This heavier spinning rod is also perfect for coastal and rock fishing. To be able to cast well and far it is wise to use a fishing rod of at least 2.7 but up to 3.30 is also fine. Twisters, small pilks, spoons and woblers are perfect here. For coastal fishing a beach rod is also a good idea to "pass the time".

But let's not forget the fly fishermen. For them there is also a place here to pick up their fishing heart. From the light fishing to the heavier salmon fishing but also on the coast there is enough to go for. So also here different aftmas, line types, flies and streamers are required.

Fishing from the boat at sea is best done with a 10 to 20 lbs boat rod with a (multiplier) reel because the size of the fish can vary considerably. A good sized conger can easily weigh 20 lbs. So the motto is not too light. But also a good uptide rod can provide a lot of fun.

Season

The season in Ireland runs from April to October. In general, the weather in southern Ireland is fairly stable during this period. But yes, of course it rains there as well. However, temperatures generally don't drop below 5º C, so palm trees even grow at this location.

Because of the relatively high temperatures, the water doesn't cool down very much either. Together with the warm Gulf Stream these are perfect conditions for the underwater flora and fauna. Sea bass is therefore caught practically all year round.

For pike fishing, there is no closed season and fishing with live bait is not allowed. May, June and September and October are the best times. For sea fishing, the warmer the water, the more fish come close to shore to hunt for bait. The sea trout are mainly caught at the beginning and at the end of the season.
