SAF Participates in Exercise Cobra Gold 2006

The Singapore Armed Forces (SAF), together with the , the United States Armed Forces, the Japanese Self Defence Force and the Indonesian Armed Forces are participating in Exercise Cobra Gold from 15 to 25 May 2006 in . The SAF had sent observers to this annual exercise from 1993 and became a full participant in 2000.

Exercise Cobra Gold 2006 is a series of multilateral exercises focusing on peace support and non-combatant evacuation operations. Observers for this year’s exercise came from Australia, Bangladesh, , France, , , , the United Arab Emirates and .

The 93-member SAF contingent led by Commander 6th Infantry Division, Brigadier-General Ravinder Singh, is participating in the combined command post exercise phase of Exercise Cobra Gold. The SAF delegation is undertaking the role of staff planners for the multinational Combined Joint Task Force, alongside their counterparts from the other armed

1 forces. The SAF will also conduct joint socio-civic activities with the Thai and US armed forces.

Exercise Cobra Gold enhances inter-operability among the participating armed forces in areas such as joint operational planning and execution processes, as well as logistics, and command, control and co-ordination issues related to the conduct of multinational peace support and non-combatant evacuation operations. Apart from enhancing professionalism, the exercise also promotes mutual understanding and friendship among the participating armed forces.
