2 NBN Basketball www.nbnbball.com OVERVIEW & PURPOSE

This Point Guard Play ebook is full of tips and information for the point guard to take their game to another level. It includes drills, key floor locations, two ball handling training cards, a point guard training card, a training vs workout card, skill development checklist, and a point guard checklist.

MY THOUGHTS ON THE POINT GUARD POSITION

Before I share some tips, drills, and workouts for the point guard position, I would like to share my thoughts on the position. Having played point guard at the collegiate level I understand the importance and responsibility of playing the point. As the old saying goes, “You’re an extension of the coach”. The point guard position is one of the hardest positions to play in any sport. You shoulder so much responsibility and players automatically look to you to be the leader or captain of the team.

One of the most important skills a point guard must have is not ball handling, shooting, on ball defense, or even decision making. To me one of the most important skills a point guard must have is communication. Yes, I believe communicating is a skill that a player must learn. With social media and technology today you can hold a conversation with someone without even saying a word. Then when the players get on the court we expect them to talk and give out directions. So during my sessions I try to get my point guards to talk as much as possible. You can imagine how extremely tough this is for some players.

Point guards should also watch a ton of film. They should study great point guards and compare what the greats are doing to their performance. What I mean by this the fundamental aspects of their game. How are they protecting the ball when pressured? How do they feed the post? When they start a fastbreak where do their eyes go? When do they shoot the pull up jumper? When should they make a bounce pass vs an air pass? To me those are some of the skills that make the great point guards great.

So take the information contained in this ebook and try to incorporate it. There’s nothing magical about the information here. There are no secret drills or information that the pros use. Just good useful information to help the point guard player get better. Hope you enjoy it and remember you can always reach out to me if you have any questions or just want to talk basketball.

3 NBN Basketball www.nbnbball.com SKILL DEVELOPMENT TIPS FOR POINT GUARDS

3 Skills point guards should work on consistently

1. Purposeful ball handling 2. Game relevant shooting 3. Conditioning

4 Keys to a good player development session

1. Have a plan 2. Establish a conditioning element (having a pace to the workout) 3. Game relevant drills 4. Must include footwork

Additional skill development thoughts:

1. Keep workouts short and intense a. 45-75 minutes for individual b. Groups can go as long as 90-120 minutes depending on number of players 2. Eliminate unproductive minutes a. No lag time - Set up cones, chairs or equipment while player(s) are shooting free throws or getting a drink of water.

How to include competition in skill sessions

1. Have players compete against clock, themselves, or the drill a. Clock - 10 makes in a minute b. Themselves - set a record beat your record c. Drill - Make 2 in a row from a specific spot in a certain amount of time before moving to a new spot 2. In group setting have players compete against each other. The loser can do sit-ups, push ups, run sprint, etc.

4 NBN Basketball www.nbnbball.com OFFENSIVE SKILL DEVELOPMENT FOR THE POINT GUARD

BALL HANDLING VS PRESSURE

1. Bounce back/retreat dribble - Using this dribble creates space and relieves pressure against the defense a. Get feet, hips, and shoulders parallel to the sideline b. Chin on your shoulder (eyes up, looking up floor toward basket) c. Ball by your back foot with off arm up for protection d. Push off front foot to gain separation

When to use bounce back dribble:

● To break 5 second count ● Off half court drive and help defender comes over to help ● Against full court man to man pressure ● Against full court man to man pressure when double team comes

EXECUTING A DRIBBLE MOVE Teaching Points: 1. Never change your stance 2. Eyes must be up 3. Get separation in 2 dribbles 4. Change speeds (slow to fast) or sometimes you have to go quick 5. When you go you dribble hard

3 Steps to learning new dribble moves: 1. Start in stationary position - This allows you to get the dribble move down. Start with form and then onto speed. 2. Execute the move on the run - After you the dribble move down you now perform the move on the run. Add chairs or cones to act as defenders. 3. Add defender - Final stage is to add a live defender. Have a defender guard you by going half speed. Then progress into having the defender bang, grab, or foul you at game speed to make the drill game like. This will also improve on being with the ball.

5 NBN Basketball www.nbnbball.com 3 Reasons to use a dribble move: 1. Create space from defense to improve passing angle or shot attempt 2. To attack the basket to make a play for yourself or teammate 3. To break pressure from aggressive defender

DRIBBLE PENETRATION Advantages: 1. Shifts the defense - Creates open gaps in the defense and forces defenders to help off teammates to stop penetration which allows for more open looks on kick out 2. Long closeouts - Good spacing among teammates can create longer closeouts on the defense. 3. Role players can elevate their game - Wing or post players that can’t create on their own can thrive off dribble penetration because their defender must help and they will get good open looks or duck ins. 4. Better team play - Stressing good ball movement and extra passes can become contagious and make players want to play unselfish.

4 Key point to dribble penetration: 1. Can draw more fouls 2. Creates open shots 3. More points in the paint opportunities 4. Puts defense in scramble

POINT GUARD PASSING TIPS

5 Passing Windows:

● Left/right ear ● Left/right hip ● Over the head Passing technique ● Universal stance - hips dropped, back straight with good vision ● Universal follow through - Elbow behind ball, snap wrist ● Step toward receiver ● Vision - Don’t stare at receiver. Use peripheral vision

6 NBN Basketball www.nbnbball.com Passes off the dribble 1. Push pass 2. Hook pass/over the shoulder 3. 1 & 2 handed bounce pass 4. Kick out pass 5. Lob pass

3 Knows to feeding post: 1. Know where/how post is being defended 2. Know how you are being defended 3. Know where the help side defender is

Teaching post to feeding post ● Use dribble to improve passing angle, get to level of post ● Look to make air pass to middle and bounce pass to baseline ● Fake a pass to make a pass ● Pass to post player's hand ● See post players chest or numbers

Passing tips: 1. Being ready to pass is just as important as being ready to shoot 2. Fake a pass to make a pass 3. Make high percentage play; be simple, precise, and on time; make sure passes 4. When passing off the drive get your shoulders square to the rim to set up the pass

Passing vs pressure ● Pivot first then pass ● Fake a pass to make a pass

4 Pivots for passing against pressure ● Strong side pivot ● Step through pivot ● Step through pivot with reverse pivot ● Reverse pivot

7 NBN Basketball www.nbnbball.com PICK N ROLL PLAY

5 Angles of Pick N Roll

1. Sideline - Off elbow of 3pt line with back to basket (back should be toward line of attack). 2. Step Up (baseline) - Screener sprints up in an L and sets screen in angled position. 3. Horns - Angled on ball screen with the screener located between the elbow and the three point line 4. Middle - Screener located at top of key facing the sideline. 5. High - Toes facing half court at an angle

How to attack on ball screen: 1. Ball handler must engage defender. Get defense below the level of the screen. 2. the screen by stepping toward the middle of the screener with your inside foot then step over the screen with outside foot and beat defender to the screen. Get low and tight (shoulder to hip). 3. If there is no hedge or help then you turn the corner to get to basket. Try to get in lane in no more than 2 dribbles. 4. Defensive reads 4.1. Hard hedge 4.1.1. Attack the hedger’s outside foot and look to turn the corner 4.1.2. If the hedger stays: 4.1.2.1. Look to make pass to the screener rolling/popping 4.1.2.2. String him out while keeping shoulders as square as possible to basket 4.1.2.3. Once hedger sprints off to rotate, change speeds and look to penetrate as deep as possible 4.1.2.4. Make the correct play or read - if you have the shot take it, if teammate is open pass it 4.1.2.5. NEVER give up dribble without solution 4.1.3. If you turn the corner look to get into lane to make play for yourself or teammate (corner drift or screener popping/rolling). 4.1.4. Look to split the hard hedge if the hedger is detached from screener. 4.2. Soft hedge 4.3. If on ball defender goes under then you shoot jumper behind the screen

8 NBN Basketball www.nbnbball.com 4.4. If on ball defender tries to deny you using the screen then you reject and go away from the screen. 4.5. If double team comes off pick you must dribble toward half court and look for pop man.

Scoring opportunities for the ball handler 1. On ball handler trails, look to drive and finish with 1.1. floater 1.2. step through 1.3. step away 2. On ball defender goes under the screen, look to shoot jumper 3. Soft hedge, shoot 1 dribble pull up or 2 dribble pull up at elbow or midline

Passing options off screen if there is no separation from on ball defender - for pass made to screener on pop 1. Bounce back/step back 2. Step through 3. Reverse pivot (pivot on outside foot & reverse back toward screener) 4. Over the shoulder pass 5. Behind the back bounce pass - advanced pass

Try to get to the rim if possible. If you can’t get to the rim then the next best option is the elbow. The elbow allows for good angle on pass, shot, and allows good spacing for screener to roll/pop.

9 NBN Basketball www.nbnbball.com FINISHING MOVES FOR POINT GUARDS Finishing Moves: 1. Inside hand lay up: Left hand lay up on the right side and a right hand lay up on the left side. When shooting a left hand lay up on the right side your footwork should be right, left, right. When shooting a right hand lay up on the left side your footwork should be left, right, right. Use this shot when driving past a long defender and you want to use the rim as a shield. 2. Inside Hand Reverse – When driving toward the basket and you are in front of the rim, you will reverse the basketball on the left side with the right hand. Vice versa on the right side. Use rim as shield from defender. 3. Floater – Use a quick jump stop to get your feet under you. Jump vertical and not long jump to avoid the charge. The ball should hit top of the square on the way down. 4. Runner – Quick off one foot when driving to the basket and being closed out quickly by a defender.

SHOOTING FOR POINT GUARDS 5 different shots to shoot during a skill development workout: 1. Catch and shoot 2. Shots off dribble 3. Shooting off cuts 4. Shooting on move 5. Transition Shooting

Shots every point guard should master:

1. Finishes around the rim - Want to be able to finish on both sides of the rim and the front of the rim with either hand off left/right foot or both feet. 2. Transition pull up jumper 3. 3pt shot 4. 1 and 2 dribble pull up 5. Free throws

Point Guard Key Floor Locations

Alleys Floor Spots

These are the areas the point guard must be aware of when handling the basketball versus full court pressure.

Green means go. This is Main Street. This is the safest place to be on the floor for a point guard. They can initiate the offense and make play off fastbreak. If you stay in this area, you are less likely to get double teamed.

Yellow means caution. This area can be dangerous. You must proceed with caution when dribbling the ball in this area. Whenever possible you want to get back to the green area.

Red means stop. You don't want to be in this area. You are more likely to get doubled team by the opposing team. When in the red zone you must try to get the ball back to the middle of the floor by using your dribble or pass. All Contents Proprietary PG Drill Book pg. 2

Outlet box - Area where point guard locates to receive outlet pass. Back to sideline, showing hands, and call for ball.

Passing Ahead Area (RED) - When in this area the point guard is looking to make the pass up the floor. First look is the big running the floor, next is the wing filling the lane.

Adjustment area (GREEN) - If the point guard makes it to this area he must decide on the proper adjustment needed for the break. He can decide to keep the basketball and try to attack, make a late pass to the wing or big, keep his dribble and go into the early offense area or abandon the fastbreak and get into a set play or offense.

Continuity/Early Offense Area (YELLOW) - When in this area the point guard go right into the teams early offense. To do this efficiently the point should be able to iniate the offense without having to organize the team. Everyone should know to flow right into the offense.
