Driving Tours  After Breakfast Meeting Tour to Mt. Baldy (15 April 2017)  Mulholland (Mullin Museum?)  San Diego  San Juan Capistrano via Ortega Highway  Reagan Library  Santa Paula Airport  Santa Ynez Winery  Taco Truck Tour—probably late Spring of 2017.  A breakfast trip up Angeles Crest Highway to Newcomb’s Ranch instead of Mimi’s (Saturday, 15 July 2017)  Big Bear-Oak Glen, probably Sunday, 17 September 2017  Overnight Tour to Monterey, possibly 30 September-1 October 2017 to go through Cholame on the anniversary of James Dean’s 1955 crash.  Tour of Angeles Crest Highway to Wrightwood—Grizzly Café (date and details TBD—could be after breakfast).

2 This is not just wishful thinking—Rod Emory has offered to host us. We just need to work out the logistics.

1997 Porsche 993 Turbo S at Auto Kennel

The Auto Kennel in Costa Mesa is trying to “unload” a 1997 Porsche 911 [993] Twin Turbo S Coupe. It has only 9,659 miles and comes with its original seats as well as the factory sports seats in it now. The Auto Kennel says Porsche built 181 of these—Wikipedia puts the number at 183 (and an ad for a yellow one at the du Pont Registry says there were 182).

Sunday, 17 September 2017, 6th International So-Cal Vintage VW Treffen

It’s at the Phoenix Club in Anaheim. It’s a classic VW event, but only old classic VWs, generally 1961 and earlier. It also includes Military and Coachbuilts (custom bodies on VW chassis—sort of like the Gmünd Porsche 356 & 356/2) and Porsche 356s (pre-As) and 356As.

All-in-all, So-Cal Vintage VW Treffen has a feel a lot like the 356 Club’s So Cal All-Porsche Swap and Car Display at the Phoenix Club.

See exactly what’s eligible and register online at www.bugin.com/treffen.htm

Saturday, 16 September 2017, Speedwell Rallye Leaving from Wolfsburg West at 8:00 AM, with an undetermined finish. It may be open to more modern cars than So-Cal Vintage VW Treffen.

20-24 September 2017, Treffen Asheville

The Appalachian Region will lead drives through the spectacular and challenging roads of the Blue Ridge Mountains on Thursday and Saturday. As always, members are free to explore these roads on their own and Porsche of Asheville has procured maps that show all the famous — and infamous — winding roads of Western Carolina. Also, scheduled for Friday is a pilgrimage to the renowned “Tail of the Dragon” — a very limited number of slots are available for this daylong drive.

For more information, go to treffen.pca.org and check the full page flyer on page 61. Registration opened 24 May 2017 at treffen.pca.org

After “trial call” on Friday, 17 February 2017, and “further proceedings” on Thursday, 23 March 2017, and more “Further Proceedings” on 22 May 2017 a Felony Jury Trial is scheduled at 9:00 AM on 22 September 2017 for Hyun Jeong Choi, 34. Lawsuit against San Diego From The San Diego Reader, by Dorian Hargrove, June 7, 2017

In March of 2017, Jon Warshawsky sued the City of San Diego for improper design of the center median and failure to maintain it.

According to public documents obtained by the Reader, the median was the cause of at least one other accident prior to the collision and the subject of numerous complaints — one of which came from the San Diego Police Department — for poor visibility in months preceding the death of Walzer.

PCA Zone 8 Concours d’Élégance

Saturday, 16 September 2017, San Diego Region Concours d’Élégance

The 60th Anniversary party continues at this year’s region Concours on September 16th! As part of our 60th Anniversary celebration for the San Diego Region, we will feature a timeline of Porsches covering each of the years of the region's history: 1957-2017, in a special display at our Concours. All models of Porsches are welcome. If you would like your Porsche to be in this display, now is the time to register at pcasdr.motorsportreg.com. No entry fee to display.

In that case that we have multiple cars to choose between for a particular year, cars will be selected based upon their uniqueness, collectability, rarity or other interesting characteristics. Be sure and tell us why we should select your car. We will notify you if your car is selected to appear in this prestigious display. If your car is not selected, you are still encouraged to come display it in the Porsche Corral at the event. All cars are also encouraged to enter the Concours, of course! See pcasdr.motorsportreg.com and pages 63 & 64 for more information.

Porsche Timeline San Diego Region is still looking for the following models: 924, 928, 944, 964, 968, Boxster, Cayman, Macan, Cayenne and Panamera.

And we need more cars from all decades, 1957-2017!

If you have one of these, please volunteer to shine it up and bring it out for display.

The annual Concours is one of San Diego Region's premier events and this year's historic timeline makes it more special than ever.

Let's work together to get all 60 vintages on display! Have an earlier vintage or 2018? We can display that too! All vintages welcome.

Please join this celebration of the region's 60th anniversary by registering at http://pcasdr.motorsportreg.com No entry fee to display.

11-21 August 2017, Monterey Classic Car Week

The usual last events to confirm have confirmed: Canepa’s Open House (page 34) and the Blackhawk Museum’s Open House (page 36).

Hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of classic cars will come to Monterey California in the hope that you’ll stop by to admire them. The hotel rates will be astronomical (especially the last weekend—so going for the week isn’t too much more) but you’d spend more on a cruise. Resort 2 Me and the usual travel websites can help you find a hotel.

Most car week events are inexpensive or free (notably PCA’s Werks Reunion) and they’re all listed in San Gabriel Valley Region’s Calendar. It’s wise to join the Porsche Corral at Laguna Seca.

Hotels

As of Monday, 7 August 2017, Kayak still showed some hotel rooms. A few are under $ 300/day if you stay the whole week.

Monterey Events

The events at classic car week are listed on the San Gabriel Valley Region Calendar. There are 92 entries starting at page 14 of the calendar.

Coast Highway Closed

According to quickmap.dot.ca.gov Rt. 1 will be closed from Big Sur Station (Post Mile 46.4) to Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge (Post Mile 45.5) due to Bridge Replacement until 6:01 PM 30 September 2017.

1961 Porsche Junior L108 Tractor, 15 hp at 2,250 rpm, 6-Speed Transmission

The Porsche 108 was the smallest and most attractive of four tractors produced by Porsche from 1956 to 1963. The tractors were produced at the old Zeppelin factory in Friedrichs-hafen-Manzell, . The appeal of the Porsche-built tractors can be attributed to much more than just their stunning looks. Porsche tractors were designed with a fluid coupling to connect the engine to a six-speed transmission – a distinctive feature of Porsche's tractors which offered the driver smooth shifting.

18-19 August 2017, Split Windshield 356 at RM Sothebys Auction

1951 Porsche 356 1500 Coupe by Reutter, Chassis no. 11111, Engine no. 30069, completed 20 December 1951. RM Sotheby’s says this car has its original 1500 cc engine and is in its original colors (black was very rare). They don’t say if it still has its original crashbox transmission. It’s estimated to sell between $600,000 and $700,000.

These early “body bumper” coupés had incredible aerodynamics—it’s only recently that many cars have matched its .29 Cd.

SGVR Member Gregg Vane’s Accident

One of our members, Gregg Vane had an accident, but he’s recovering. This is from an e-mail which we just got permission to publish.

Subject: Gregg's status in his own words, Saturday, July 22 Dear Family and Friends,

My truly wonderful life partner and best friend Deb has been keeping most of you in the loop these past few days regarding the events surround my slight detour to So Cal from Mammoth Lakes on Sunday afternoon. I decided it was high time that I give her a break and summarize the whole adventure from my perspective.

I cannot tell you how much your messages have meant to me these past few days. Really, I had no idea that they could have such a wonderful impact. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Very few of you on this long email chain know that while my little drama was unfolding and Deb was trying to keep up with email updates, her Cloudsat spacecraft went into safe mode7 because of an operator error at the Air Forces ops center in Albuquerque. Living up to her long-standing reputation as The Wonder Woman of LA (or the Earth???) she has been juggling endless telecons with her team, the myriad of details related to my care, and oh yes, the purchase of a condo with Katie back up in Mammoth Lakes. No language that I have ever learned comes close to having the words to express my feelings.

Anyway, here’s the story. Gregg’s detour from an otherwise lovely drive through the desert from Mammoth Lakes back to Altadena

Sunday afternoon I was cruising down Highway 395 in my Porsche from Mammoth to Altadena through the beautiful Mojave Desert. The summer Monsoon had arrived and pockets of rain were falling along the highway. Overhead the sky was grey, sort of bruised in appearance with lowering clouds hugging the ridge line of the Sierra Nevada to my right. The air was sweet with the pungent smell of wet sage brush. Magical. I was smiling and listening to some tunes on my iPhone. But then a really big rain cell developed over the highway. I cancelled cruise control and slowed down. Before I knew it the Porsche was hydroplaning. For those who have not been in such a situation it is akin to driving into an area of

7 For those of you who don’t deal with spacecraft, safe mode is very, very bad. It means that the spacecraft had a severe failure and its automated systems shut down as much as they could and placed the bird in a state where it might survive until ground controllers solve all the problems.

sgvr.pca.org 47 of 69 facebook.com/PCA-SGVR San Gabriel Valley Region PCA Zone 8 2014 Region of the Year Weekly Update 8 August 2017

road that is covered with black ice – a thin layer, super slick, nearly invisible, that extends for 100s of feet in all directions along the highway.

The rear end broke free of the pavement almost immediately and eased the car into a slow spin. Attempts to bring the car under control using all the skills of a lifetime of driving on snow and ice were insufficient and the car headed off into the median strip at 60 mph or so, into a sage-brush covered field of lava boulders. The car slammed into a large clump of sage that was hiding a big lava boulder on the passenger’s side, flew upside-down into the air, landed and may have rolled another time or two according to eye witnesses. I kinda lost count though never lost consciousness.

When my friend Bill McKinnon at Wash U St Louis heard the details it reminded him of this classic tune. Give it a listen.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S1Cuekbklkg

Anyway, the lovely Porsche landed on the wheels, doors closed, side airbags but not the front ones deployed. Music was still streaming from my iphone via Bluetooth. I tried the door handle. It worked normally so I decided to get out of the car just in case it was going to blow up. I felt like I’d been hit on the top of the head with a sledge hammer. My neck hurt a lot but I could move it from left to right a little, which I did just once as a test.

I walked (well, staggered might be more accurate) toward the highway to flag down some help. It was still raining. Several cars drove by. Then I heard a guy on the other side of the wide sage brush and lava boulder filled median strip talking on his cell phone. He was calling 911 but didn’t know where we were. I explained our location to him and went back to lean against the car while he set out a yellow warning triangle. Then he came over, looked at me, looked at the car, and freaked out a little. After he calmed down I asked him to find my iPhone in the car and take some pictures. By that time the sky had cleared and the sun was out, and it was a postcard day in the late afternoon in the high desert. See attached. You might want to be sitting down when you look at the first few photos.

I called Deb who was on a plane about to depart from DEN to LAX. She was/is remarkable, stunned but still calm and collected when I explained what happened. I called my son West who was at home in Mammoth. We had just had lunch together a few hours earlier. He has dealt with many serious injuries during his years on both the ski and mountain bike patrols at Mammoth Resort. He too was remarkable. Clearly gravely worried (he anticipated the diagnosis described below and knew the implications) but he was calm and offered to drive down right away. I suggested he wait until I knew where the paramedics would take me.

The paramedics arrived 15 minutes later and back-boarded me into the ambulance for the 30-minute ride back up the road to Lone Pine through which I had driven just an hour earlier. Amazingly they have a CT scanner there. The doc looked at the images and sort of gasped. “This is bad, this is really bad!” he said. Direct quote. Nice bedside manners, I thought! But he was a nice guy and after explaining that the C2, C4/5 and a couple of L-vertebrae has been fractured, we talked about the search for life in the solar system, black holes, quantum chromodynamics (yes, he asked me to explain it to him), the wacko

sgvr.pca.org 48 of 69 facebook.com/PCA-SGVR San Gabriel Valley Region PCA Zone 8 2014 Region of the Year Weekly Update 8 August 2017

Star Wars program that Reagan pushed for back in the 80s and that many of us pushed back against, and probably a few other such topics. Just your normal conversation under the circumstances. But no question, he and his team were astonished that I could move at all, let alone every single finger, toe, and all four limbs, and so am I, now that I know the extent of the damage to my neck and spine. Some of you may not know that the C2 vertebra is essentially where the brain stem and most of the nerves of the body come together.

Soon I was in the medivac plane that had flown down from Bishop to take me to So Cal. I asked the Lone Pine folks to try to get me into Pasadena’s renowned Huntington Memorial Hospital and they did. Deb was waiting at the ER entrance. An awesome team led by neurosurgeon Dr. Ian Ross took over. After considering the options for recovery, the famous “halo” was the hands-down first choice. It was installed on Monday afternoon. It fits well. See photo attached. On Tuesday I managed a short walk around the ICU, Wednesday was moved to the “regular” section of the hospital for those with serious neuro-skeletal issues, and yesterday Deb brought me our place in Altadena. Man, is it good to be home again, just like Pink Floyd famously said in a great tune a few years ago! I’m one lucky hombre for sure.

As for what’s next, it will be three months in the halo (see pictures attached) here in Altadena and also in Mammoth where summer is too precious to miss. Then a period of intense physical therapy will follow. The neurosurgeon says that it is not unreasonable to expect full or close to full recovery. I think that’s a darn good goal.

Here’s a nice tune that sums up my view – Long May You Run by Neil Diamond. My little Porsche’s running days are over – but not mine! Thanks to Tony Ryan for teaching me to play it a little bit like Neil:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S1Cuekbklkg

That’s about it. Quite a week!

Love to you all. Gregg

2017 356 Club Concours

From Stoddard, 27 July 2017:

The 356 Club of Southern California moved their annual "World's largest 356-only fully-judged concours" to Huntington Beach's Central Park on July 22nd, 2017. The new Central Park venue is over 350 acres with plenty of open spaces to park Porsches and gave a more open feel than the almost-cramped Dana Point location.

Champagne Carbon is the New Official Formula 1 Champagne

Photo from www.carscoops.com

sgvr.pca.org 51 of 69 facebook.com/PCA-SGVR San Gabriel Valley Region PCA Zone 8 2014 Region of the Year Weekly Update 8 August 2017

From CarScoops, 1 August 2017:

The series has signed a new deal with Champagne Carbon, a French vintner which has been supplying the sparkling wine for the podiums at the past few grands prix, and which has now made the relationship official.

Though it's a relatively new label, Carbon has roots in the production of champagne stretching back hundreds of years. The bubbly it's supplying is Vintage 2009 Blanc de Blanc Grand Cru Millesime, made from 100% chardonnay grapes. But the novelty here is not what's in the bottles, but the bottles themselves.

While French law prohibits changing the shape of champagne bottles, Carbon coats theirs in a layer of real carbon fiber that's said to take the craftsmen a full week to produce in a 21-step process. The result looks fitting for F1, and each bottle on the podium has its own unique label: gold for the winner, silver for the runner-up, and bronze for third place. And as you'd expect, they're suitably expensive: a standard-size 750ml bottle of Carbon champagne goes for about $500, but a 1.5-liter magnum like the ones they're using on the podium cost nearly $3,000. Go even bigger with a 6-liter Methuselah and you'll be looking at over $8k, with a 15-liter Nebuchadnezzar nearing $50k.

Prior to Carbon's arrival on the podium, the bubbly was provided by Chandon, which also sponsors the McLaren team, but is considered to produce “sparkling wine,” not actual champagne since the winery is located in California, not France. They'll probably continue using sparkling non-alcoholic rosewater in stricter Muslim countries. But with Bahrain and Istanbul long since dropped from the calendar, and Malaysia and Azerbaijan decidedly more liberal on the subject, that comes down only to Abu Dhabi.

Phil Hill’s Book ‘Inside Track’ Printing

‘Inside Track’ is Phil Hill’s first-person autobiography featuring his own extraordinary photography (mostly Kodachrome shot with a Leica).

The two volumes which form the Collector’s Edition started printing on schedule, on Monday 10 July and was successfully completed some 10 days later.

And the results are glorious. Every 12-page sheet was carefully matched to the original proofs to produce radiant images full of detail. The luxurious Italian paper has also played its part, helping to create completed volumes matching – possibly exceeding – the very highest standards we were aiming for. Be warned, though, these are substantial books – with a trimmed page size of some 13 inches and a spine width of over 2 inches, each volume has ended up weighing close to 5 kilos (11 pounds).

Advance copies are being rushed to the UK and the USA, in good time to go on display at the Monterey Historics meeting in mid-August and at the Goodwood Revival in early September. If all goes well the main shipment, meanwhile, will be arriving in the UK and the US during the third week of September and will start going out within days to all those who have pre-ordered copies.

I Finally Got To Drive a Real Porsche

From Jalopnik, by David Tracy, 2 August 2017 at 9:40 AM:

“Porsches are fast,” they say. “Porsches are refined,” they claim. “Porsches have great handling,” they allege. Well, I just drove a Porsche for the first time, and I can say unequivocally: Porsches are none of those things. I’ve been living a lie.

Josi’s tractor has been in her family for close to 50 years. She plans to leave the tractor largely as-is. To her, each dent, each scratch, and each blotch of paint tells a story of her family’s history. A fully-restored 108 Junior, to her, just wouldn’t be the same machine.

A few weeks ago, I finally drove a Porsche for the first time. And it was a proper one too: air cooled, rear-wheel drive and of course, manual-shift. It was a blast, though it left me wondering why people keep telling me Porsches are fast. The 1960 Porsche 108 Junior I drove could barely jaunt itself down a driveway in the time it took you to read this.

Yellow Bird, Alois Ruf, & History

From Road & Track, by Sam Smith, Aug 3, 2017

IN 1987, ON A 15.5-MILE TEST OVAL in Ehra-Lessien, Germany, a 469-hp twin-turbo Porsche 911 went 211 mph. Only it wasn’t technically a Porsche—it did not wear a Stuttgart VIN and was known legally as a Ruf CTR. The car had been completed just one week before, in a small garage in the village of Pfaffenhausen, by a 37-year-old man born in the house next door. And for a brief, shining moment, it was the most potent production device this magazine had ever seen.

A moment we made happen. The July 1987 issue of R&T holds a test called “The World’s Fastest Cars.” It was the second running of an experiment we first tried in 1984. The ’87 version includes nine exotics, from an Isdera Imperator 108i to a Lamborghini Countach 5000S Quattrovalvole. Porsche sent no less than two examples of its range-topping 959, and a Ferrari Testarossa was clocked at 185 mph. The slowest machine went 176, in an era before computers were used to keep supercars aerodynamically stable. Before the invention of electronic stability control, when an industry discovered how to claim a slide using silicon and wheel-speed sensors. Before the 253-mph Bugatti Veyron made the top-speed question almost irrelevant. When most new sport sedans would only crack 150 mph if you dropped them from space.

The author talks with Alois Ruf and covers the history of his company and dealing with Porsche back when… It’s well worth reading at www.roadandtrack.com/car-culture/a10379996/the-genius-who- beat-ferrari-and-porsche-to-the-worlds-fastest-car

Speaking at Tech Tactics about fifteen years ago Herr Ruf gave a lot of credit for his success to the fact that it was wet weather and all the other cars were red or silver: the photographer always wanted the yellow car in front. It probably didn’t hurt that Ruf’s car was also the fastest car in the world.

How Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca Helped Redefine U.S. Sports Car Racing

From Road and Track, by Blake Z. Rong, Jul 31, 2017:

From the top of the Corkscrew at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, you can see the ocean. At the pinnacle of the most famous corner in American motorsport, 900 feet above sea level, lies the waters of Monterey Bay, and just before you reach the top of Turn 8, you catch a glimpse of the water. It's a brief reminder of where you are.

Off in the distance, past the Lone Cypress, past a billion simultaneous rounds of golf, past Steinbeck’s laudation of his Cannery Row scamps and the teeming concentrations of money that now make up this place, you turn in blind into the steep left-hander, drop five and a half stories, and roll down screaming into a long sweeping right that pulls you in every different direction. Down the roller coaster you go. It’s 70 degrees, with a cool Pacific breeze, and it's lovely day. In Monterey, it’s always a lovely day.

This year, Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca celebrates its 60th anniversary. To understand the impact that the track has had on American sports car racing, you have to understand where it came from: After World War II, young Americans went mad for the sport. The contest at Laguna Seca spawned other legendary road races: at Torrey Pines, San Diego; Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin; Watkins Glen, New York; Pebble Beach, two hours south of San Francisco. Here's a look back at the key events in its history.
