Asheville Art Museum

GRADE LEVEL: Grades Pre-K to 12

On this virtual field trip students will be guided through an interactive art exploration by an experienced museum docent in which they will use pieces from the museum's collection to have rich dialogue around curriculum and art.

Choose a topic from four curriculum-based Virtual Visits (see below), or one of our special exhibitions; teachers will be provided with a video link for a related, grade-appropriate art making activity.

Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center

Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center will offer ACS students three virtual field trip experiences. Each 45-minute discussion and virtual tour will guide students through digital resources on the history of Black Mountain College in relation to social justice, racial equity, and world politics.

For Nex Millen, a native of Philadelphia, music is at the forefront of everything. “Music helps us to truly live in harmony with ourselves,” he explains. Nex embodies this philosophy as an accomplished music producer, visual and performing artist, DJ, student and teacher of Hip Hop culture.

As a LEAF Master Teaching Artist, Nex’s programs give youth a voice by exposing them to the latest in electronic music technology and different modes of artistic expression in the context of their cultural significance. Participants explore self expression through singing and songwriting, audio and visual media production, and even graffiti art.

Through his 20 years of experience in the music entertainment industry, not only as an artist, but also in the fields of music retail, music marketing, and artist development, Nex also emphasizes the importance of teaching and learning the ins and outs of the industry. Jump into the culture and art of Hip Hop dance through the ages, learning iconic moves and grooves from classics like King Tutt (Tuttung) and Waving, to authentic street styles like Popping and the Robot, to the popular styles of today. Influenced by the vibrant and diverse musical traditions of his home-country of Costa Rica, Agustin Frederic pursued an education in music, social behavioral sciences at UCF and jazz studies in FSU catapulting his personal and professional path into the world of musicianship. He is a performing, touring and recording drummer and percussionist as well as a live sound engine music producer and composer with esteemed credits across the . As a percussion teacher, Agustin’s mission is to awaken life, positivity and joy. Life has a beat, and for that beat to hold steady, one must nurture it. Agustin accesses his extensive repertoire of knowledge and skill in drum set, orchestral percussion, hand drums (Latin, African, Middle Eastern), marching and rudimental percussion, percussion ensemble and Brazilian percussion to custom tailor programs that cater to the needs and goals of the individual or group. No matter the aim, percussion’s global roots can offer a direction.

West African Djembe Jam

Adama Dembele is a master djembefola (djembe player) from the Ivory Coast, West Africa. Born into 33 generations of musicians where his family home was known as Djembeso, “the house of djembe,” it is Adama’s mission in life to preserve and promote authentic West African musical and cultural traditions throughout the world. He has toured several continents and collaborated with various major acts and companies such as Yelembad’abidjan, Ensemble Koteba, Congoba, Oumou Sangare, Salif Keita, Affou Keita, Sogona Djata, Toubab Krewe, his original band, Les Amis as well as many others.

In teaching, Adama seeks to share a holistic understanding of his deep cultural roots including language, the rhythms of the djembe drum and accompanying dances and customary dress, the historical context and storytelling properties of the music, a sense of place and more. While dozens of musicians flock to his home for this education, we are honored to welcome Adama to Asheville since 2005 for experiences that transport and transform us. Stop Motion Animation

Lisa Smith has been teaching Stop Motion Animation & Live Action Movie Making to students of all ages for more than a decade, and is recognized as an Innovative Teacher by PBS Learning Media and the Henry Ford Foundation for her work in this field. At the intersection of visual creativity and technical ability, Movie Making is a powerful tool for learning, engaging both creators and viewers. Using cut paper, white boards, clay, chalk & everyday objects in both 2D & 3D, students bring their imaginations to life with Stop Motion Animation. First, students take numerous photos using provided digital cameras and portable animation stands. Then they edit the photos together with basic movie editing software, adding music, sound effects, their voices, titles and credits. Lisa can provide up to 8 animation stands with cameras and up to 6 laptops for editing, which can be shared by groups of students. This collaborative process can also be adapted to your school’s technology. In Live Action Movie Making, students plan, shoot and edit a movie of their own design. This art medium adapts well to all ages and all subjects, from drawing & sculpting to history & science.

Dance - The Positivity Movement

Melvin AC Howell is an internationally cultured choreographer who has been transforming and molding lives, while evolving the art of dance since the age of nine. His approach is to “spread positivity, encouragement, and guidance through dance.” With a background in fitness, art, and many different cultural styles of dance, Melvin brings a unique vision to the art of dance. His visionary style and technique promotes growth physically, mentally, and emotionally, encouraging a strengthened body, mind, foundation, and creative capacity. As a movement expert and master instructor in Hip Hop, Street Dance, and Animation, students can expect to learn, smile, laugh and grow as they are taken on a scientific and mathematical journey of body control. Students will learn to move unrealistically, like a robot or a cartoon, and in a safe and healthy way through the understanding of their bodies, muscles, joints, and different angles. Songwriting or Positive Change

Melissa and Kayla McKinney are a mother/daughter team who have been working together to use music to make a difference since Kayla was a little girl. Now a Junior in college, Kayla has toured with her band The Change spreading a message of hope and inspiration for most of her life. As Musicians, Singers, and Songwriters, they both have a passion for inspiring young people to raise their voice.

In Leaf’s songwriting class, students will not only learn about melodies, rhythm, rhyme, song structure, and lyrical content, they will also explore the power of music to affect positive change in the world. They will learn about the genres of blues, jazz, folk, hip hop, reggae, and funk and how their traditions are rooted in change-making. They will explore the impact the music has had on social, political, and economic issues. Students will participate in guided songwriting activities and have the opportunity to hear their words and ideas in a song. Lesson plans can be suited to meet the needs of any age group.

Understanding Literature Through Monologues

Ashleigh has been teaching and performing classical theater and Shakespeare for the better part of 20 years. She is the Artistic Founding Director of the Montford Moppets Youth Shakespeare Theatre Company, where their mission is to empower youth with autonomy; through creativity and responsibility while creating community using Shakespeare and classical theater.

In a workshop with LEAF, students will learn how to better understand classical literature and/or Shakespeare by working on and performing a monologue. Students can either write an original monologue based on the classrooms current literature studies or find an existing monologue from Shakespeare's works.

Then they rehearse, by working in small groups to coach each other and with me one-on- one to hone and perfect their monologue; focusing on the language, setting and character to better understand the story, while learning how to communicate and give constructive feedback in groups, public speaking and performance, and gaining confidence as well as a better understanding of literary language, story arcs, character motivations and interactions. PRE-K CREATIVE CURRICULUM Pre-K teachers can apply to receive Roots + Wings Little Wings Creative Cultivation Curriculum for their classrooms. The hand-illustrated curriculum books (full of creative explorations) can be used as tools to broaden opportunities to weave creative explorations into the classrooms.
