The Lycée Français de New York is a dynamic N-12 independent school situated on a beautiful, purpose- built campus on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. The Lycée is committed to bilingual education of the highest standard and this year celebrated its 85th anniversary year. The school seeks an experienced admissions and enrollment professional to become Director of Enrollment, assuming the role at some point after 1 January 2021 and by July 2021. This is an exciting opportunity for a professional with significant cross-cultural experience to help redefine and steer enrollment management at the Lycée.

With 1,265 students and almost 300 faculty and staff representing over 50 nationalities, the Lycée is one of the few independent schools in New York City that is truly international, with an educational mission unique among New York City schools. Its 2015-2020 Strategic Plan “Our Vision: Aujourd’hui et Demain” constitutes the school’s current road map, and further deepened efforts in bilingual teaching and learning. The French Baccalaureate is the backbone of the school’s secondary programming, with a traditional French Bac, international French Bac, and a French-American Bac offered as choices to students in reinvented versions introduced in 2019. Student well-being and strong student-teacher relationships are at the center of the educational experience across all grade levels. In addition, the leadership of the school has engaged the entire community on the critical issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion.

The Director of Enrollment will play a vital role in the Lycée community, serving as a model of the Lycée’s culture and values to prospective and current families. HISTORY

Founded in 1935 at the initiative of the French Consul General and subsequently chartered by the New York Board of Regents as an independent not-for-profit school, the Lycée Français de New York originally offered only high school education primarily to children of French expatriates on the model of French secondary schools (ergo, the designation as a “lycée”). After WWII and through the 1960’s and 1970’s, the school expanded to include a middle school and a primary school located with the original campus, comprised of six townhouses spread across more than 20 blocks on Manhattan’s Upper East Side (traditional homes to many of the city’s French-speaking families). During this period, the school’s enrollment increased to over 900, representing over 40 nationalities.

In the late 1990’s, a dynamic and forward-thinking group of parents led an initiative to reposition the school and reform the governance and leadership that had been in effect for over 30 years. This

CARNEYSANDOE.COM 3 effort led to the hiring of a new Head of School, the design of a new school, the divestment of the six townhouses, the raising of $100 million of bank debt, and a revamping of governance. In September 2003, the Lycée moved to its current campus, a modern, spacious, light-filled facility on East 75th Street.

From 2003 through 2013, facing increased demand and in spite of having discontinued its Pre-Nursery program in 2009, the school’s enrollment grew to reach more than 1,300 students. With its campus at capacity and the will to adapt teaching and learning to fulfill its mission and educational goals, the Lycée opened its contiguous York Wing addition in September 2016, adding another 19,000 square feet of learning space.

Since its founding, the Lycée has enrolled more than 35,000 students. Today, it has many students of alumni parents and grandparents. A significant proportion of each graduating class are “lifers,” who have been at the school since early Nursery and Maternelle.

THE SCHOOL

The Lycée Français de New York offers students and their families an academically demanding, pluricultural program unique in New York City. Over its history, the Lycée has established itself as a leader in French and American bilingual education, recognized throughout French and American educational communities worldwide as a forward looking and innovative school with a vibrant community of high achieving, socio-economically diverse students, excellent teachers and staff, and deeply committed parents. The Lycée is the only school in New York City to prepare students for both the French Baccalauréat exam and the New York State high school diploma. Graduates of the Lycée choose to attend a wide range of leading colleges and universities, enrolling in schools across the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, the European Union, and Asia. The Lycée offers features not shared by other independent schools in New York City.

CARNEYSANDOE.COM 4 Students arrive at the Lycée from a wide variety of backgrounds: 25% are French ex-pats, 25% are American and about 30% are French-American with the other 20% of families hailing from some 50 countries around the world. The result is a diverse international community with a genuine spirit of inclusiveness and enthusiasm. Parents, students and faculty alike report a sense of belonging and pride in being part of the Lycée. Through a growing commitment to increasing financial aid, which has increased tenfold in the past decade, the Lycée works actively to maintain broad representation of backgrounds and experiences across the student body. Tuition is among the lowest in Manhattan, supporting that initiative.

Students develop fine motor skills while learning the basics of individual and team play.

CARNEYSANDOE.COM 7 In Secondary, a full two-thirds of students participate in over 43 competitive athletic teams, which continue to bring home championships and integrate the Lycée and its students into the independent school community across New York City. Students can choose to play soccer, rugby, volleyball, cross country, basketball, swimming, gymnastics, indoor track, squash, tennis, track and field, or baseball. Many coaches are former professional athletes and come to the school from the top of their fields. The school is a member of the Athletic Conference of Independent Schools, Independent School Athletic League, and New York City Athletic League. Students also have the option of participating in extracurricular sports and activities.

SCHOOL LIFE

Realizing that learning and growth take place well beyond the classroom, the school provides a broad selection of after-school clubs and activities. Even beyond the areas of academics, arts, and athletics, students at the Lycée may deepen their personal interests and skills, and they are encouraged to grow and thrive as individuals through any of the 150 after-school clubs and programs offered. For students who wish to pursue their creative talents, a wide variety of clubs in music, dance, theater, visual arts, and culinary arts are offered. Additionally, a variety of science, art, and other special interest clubs are available to students at the Secondary level. Selections include 3D printing clubs in the Makerspace, award-winning middle- and high-school Robotics Clubs, and classes in digital art, coding, virtual-reality creation, Le Lynx (student online and print newspaper), The Fridge (student literary magazine), Harvard Model Congress, and more.

An extension of community service and project-based learning initiatives, service learning at the Lycée invites students through their coursework and special projects to understand and seek solutions to societal challenges. Service learning takes on added dimensions in the school’s bilingual and

CARNEYSANDOE.COM 8 pluricultural environment, as students have a deeper understanding of differences and an adaptability and sensitivity that opens up their opportunities to give and also to learn from others. Two dedicated service-learning integrators work closely with teachers and the program’s director across the school to develop projects at the classroom, school, local, national, and international level. At the intersection of project-based learning and service learning, a semester-long course in social entrepreneurship is required of all ninth-grade students.

CAMPUS

The school facilities, which occupy a single campus, were completed in 2003 with two connected five-story structures housing classrooms and labs, libraries, gymnasiums, offices, a cafeteria, and an auditorium. At the entry level, a commons opposite the central lobby area serves a variety of functions, from cafeteria to group meeting space. The 354-seat state-of-the-art auditorium offers a unique and inviting venue that hosts student performing arts events, as well as outside presentations and performances by the Cultural Center. The Lycée’s emphasis on digital learning and literacy at all grade levels is reinforced with significant investments in technology infrastructure across the school, including high-speed Internet and Smartboards in all classrooms, as well as one-to-one iPad program for students beginning in elementary school. Committed to remaining at the leading edge of technology, the Lycée is also certified for LEED- EBOM to maximize efficiency and minimize environmental impact.
