2014 Event Overview

On November 7 and 8, 2014, the first-ever Made In Maui County Festival (MIMCF) was held at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center in Kahului. Presented by the Mayor’s Office of Economic Development (OED) and the Maui Chamber of Commerce, this two-day event:

- Showcased locally made products that have a 51% value added in Maui County to both visitors and residents. These products included foods, produce, art, crafts, jewelry, fashion, gifts, collectibles and any other products that met the criteria for vendor participation.

- Helped to grow our islands’ businesses by providing opportunities for participating vendors to meet with prospective retailers and wholesalers and connect with new customers.

A total of 130 vendors qualified to participate in the 2014 event, and a waiting list comprised of nearly 40 businesses was established for additional local companies hoping to participate.

The MIMCF took place over two days with Friday, November 7th set-up as an invitation-only for wholesale buyers, retailers and distributors. Held from 2 pm to 4 pm, this Buyers Preview attracted nearly 300 people comprised of wholesale buyers, retailers, VIPs and sponsors.

On Saturday, November 8th the event was opened to the public from 8 am to 4:30 pm with vendor sales, demonstrations, a fashion show, food trucks and prize drawings taking place. Despite a steady downpour, the MIMCF still managed to attract thousands of residents and visitors. Within the first 90 minutes of the daylong event, more than 2,000 people walked through the gates of the Maui Arts & Cultural Center, snatching up orange logo festival bags and buying a variety of items at what was being dubbed the largest product vendor show in the county. By the end of the day, approximately 9,109 attendees were recorded.

In total, over 9,400 visitors and residents attended the two-day event of which approximately 35 percent were visitors.

The MIMCF was made possible through funding from the Maui County Council and sponsorship support from the following community-minded businesses:

Innovate Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Company Hawaii Magazine Maui No Ka Oi Magazine The Maui News Pacific Media Group Paradise Television Network State of Hawaii Department of Transportation - Kahului Airport Courtyard Marriott Maui Kahului Airport KAOI Radio Group HHawaii Media Bank of Hawaii DR Horton - Schuler Division Goodfellow Bros., Inc. Hawaii Gas Maui Electric Company Matson

The event was run by working committees established by OED and the Maui Chamber of Commerce and involved the participation of hundreds of community stakeholders and volunteers. A list of sponsors and supporters are listed in the 2014 MIMCF program booklet.

The marketing firm of Linn Nishikawa & Associates was hired to provide all marketing, advertising, graphic design, and promotional support for the 2014 MIMCF. A sampling of the coverage received is summarized in the Marketing section of this report.

In evaluating the impact of the 2014 MIMCF, post-event evaluation forms were submitted by participating product vendors who reported:

- Over $300,000 in total product sales - Over 180 total new wholesale accounts/orders were closed - Over 1,070 leads for future sales/wholesale accounts

Also refer to the Testimonials for vendor comments about the event.

In summary, the inaugural MIMCF benefitted our local economy in many ways. Besides giving local merchants the chance to showcase and sell their locally produced items, it also stimulated our economy as a whole by bringing interested shoppers to our island. In summary, everyone benefited both directly and indirectly from the festival.

Participating Vendors

Originally limited to 102 vendors, the MIMCF event committee increased the total amount of booth spaces to over 130 in an effort to accommodate the high demand. Vendor space was completely sold out and a waiting list was established for nearly 40 businesses hoping to participate.

This year’s vendors had to meet certain criteria in order to participate, including having their business based in Maui County, products being offered for sale also had to meet a minimum 51% Hawaii value- added valuation. The event’s product mix, quality and creativity value of products were also considered during the selection process by this year’s event committee.

First-Ever “Made In Maui County” Festival Accepting Vendor Applications, Sponsors

WAILUKU, Maui, Hawai‘i – The Mayor’s Office of Economic Development today announced that the inaugural “Made in Maui County” Festival will be held November 7 and 8, 2014 at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center in Kahului. Approximately 6,000 to 8,000 residents and visitors are anticipated to attend the event, which will showcase a wide variety of made-in-Maui County products, including foods, produce, art, crafts, jewelry, fashion, gifts, collectibles and more in one location.

Planning for the first-ever festival is in full swing with vendor applications and sponsorship forms now being accepted on the event’s official website: www.MadeInMauiCountyFestival.com. The event is being presented by the Mayor’s Office of Economic Development in partnership with the Maui Chamber of Commerce.

“This new festival will benefit our local economy in many ways,” said Mayor Alan Arakawa. “Besides giving local merchants the chance to showcase and sell their locally produced items, it stimulates our economy as a whole by bringing in interested shoppers to our island. In other words, everyone benefits both directly and indirectly from the festival.”

Vendors must be based in Maui County and feature a minimum of 51 percent, value-added in Hawaii. Booth space will be assigned based on type of product and on a first-come, first-served basis. Vendor applications can be downloaded from www.MadeInMauiCountyFestival.com; click on “Vendors” button.

Sponsorship opportunities are another way for companies to show their support of Maui County’s entrepreneurs and their products while increasing visibility for their own business. To receive a Sponsor Packet, click on the “Sponsors” button on the festival website.

The event will kick-off with a Wholesale Buyers and Distributors Event/Reception (by invitation-only) on Friday, November 7th from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. On Saturday, November 8 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., the Festival will be open to the public with approximately 100 vendors offering a myriad of made in Maui 22

County products, plus food, demonstrations, restaurant vendors, food trucks and more! Admission is $3; children 12 and under are free.

Patterned after the successful “Made In Hawaii” Festival, this new Maui County event offers greater opportunities for local businesses to participate.

“Not all businesses can afford to go to Oahu for the ‘Made In Hawaii’ festival,” said Teena Rasmussen, Director of the Mayor’s Office of Economic Development. “Costs for transportation, accommodations and staffing can quickly add up. That’s why this new event was created to make it more affordable and convenient for our local businesses to showcase their products right here at home.”

For many years, the Maui Chamber of Commerce has boosted awareness of the County’s locally made products through their “Made in Maui” brand and their Made in Maui Trade Council.

“Both residents and visitors are always looking for things made by local people, local hands, local hearts, to keep dollars in our community and to grow these outstanding businesses,” said Maui Chamber of Commerce President Pamela Tumpap. “This Made In Maui County Festival will be a celebration of the many wonderful products created here on Maui, Molokai and Lanai.”

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

First-ever Made In Maui County Festival will focus on growing islands’ local businesses

WAILKU, Maui, HI – This week, the Mayor’s Office of Economic Development and the Maui Chamber of Commerce announced the 130 vendors who will be participating in the 2014 Made in Maui County Festival. Considered the largest product vendor show in Maui County, this inaugural event will offer a wide variety of made in Maui County products – including foods, produce, art, crafts, jewelry, fashion, gifts, collectibles and more – plus demonstrations and food trucks ALL in one location!

Held at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center in Kahului, the event will kick-off on Friday, November 7, with an invitation-only event for retailers and wholesalers. On Saturday, November 8, the event will be open to the public from 8 am to 4:30 pm. Public admission is $3, children 12 and under are free.

“This Festival was created to help grow our islands’ businesses,” said County of Maui Mayor Alan Arakawa. “There’s such incredible talent here at home and we’re hoping to open doors for these hard- working entrepreneurs by providing opportunities for them to meet with prospective retailers and wholesalers and connect with new customers. Our small businesses are the backbone of our islands’ economy and their success will ultimately benefit our community at-large.”

For a complete listing of the vendors along with a list of the products offered, visit www.MadeInMauiCountyFestival.com/vendors-list.

Originally limited to 102 vendors, the Festival increased the total amount of booth spaces to over 130 in an effort to accommodate the high demand. Vendor space is now completely sold out and there is a waiting list.

Over 150 businesses met the event’s application requirements to be considered.

“We held four informational meetings earlier this year to answer questions from business owners about the event,” said Teena Rasmussen, Director of the Mayor’s Office of Economic Development. “We also continue to receive hundreds of emails and calls from businesses, residents and visitors looking to attend 27 this year’s event. It’s been extremely gratifying to see the overwhelming response from our community ranging from event sponsors who make the event financially possible to local businesses and individuals wanting to encourage entrepreneurship in the islands.”

Patterned after the successful Made in Hawaii Festival on Oahu, which annually attracts more than 35,000 attendees, Maui County’s own version hopes to capitalize on the successful formula used by their Oahu counterpart. Maui County’s event organizers are conservatively estimating approximately 8,000 visitors and residents attending their Festival in November.

For artist Kenneth Hiraoka of Hawaiian Carvings, whose hand-carved fish hooks, poi pounders and other collectibles can be seen at local galleries, the Festival offers an opportunity to showcase his Hawaiian heirlooms to a broader audience of residents and visitors.

“I believe that many of the people attending this product show will be looking for something different – something that represents our islands,” said Hiraoka. “This venue offers an excellent opportunity to share my artwork and our island’s host culture.”

Then, there are those like Made in Hawaii Festival veteran Michael Kilinski of Maui Jelly Factory, who is looking to expand the market share for his company’s jams, jellies, mustard, sauces, syrups, salad dressings and candy products.

“It doesn’t matter whether you started your business one year ago or decades ago – entrepreneurs who want to succeed long-term must get out there and connect with their customers,’ said Kalinski. “That’s one of the reasons why events like this Festival are so important. They help create opportunities and offer a vehicle for local businesses to get the word out about our products. I hope this Festival will become an annual tradition in Maui County.”

The Festival is presented by the County of Maui, Mayor’s Office of Economic Development and the Maui Chamber of Commerce. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Local businesses thrive at Made In Maui County Festival Inaugural event draws thousands despite steady rainfall at Maui Arts & Cultural Center

WAILKU, Maui, HI – A steady downpour only seemed to whet the appetite of thousands of residents and visitors who turned out Saturday for businesses showcasing their locally made products at the first- ever Made in Maui County Festival.

Within the first 90 minutes of the daylong event, more than 2,000 people walked through the gates of the Maui Arts & Cultural Center, snatching up orange logo festival bags and buying a variety of items at what was being dubbed the largest product vendor show in the county. By day’s end, event organizers counted more than 9,000 in attendance. “I’m absolutely thrilled,” said Teena Rasmussen, Director of the Mayor’s Office of Economic Development. “We’re so grateful for support of the community, our sponsors, our vendors, volunteers and the general public.”

“I’m absolutely thrilled,” said Teena Rasmussen, Director of the Mayor’s Office of Economic Development. “We’re so grateful for support of the community, our sponsors, our vendors, volunteers and the general public.”

Prior to the event opening at 8 a.m., festival attendees formed a line that stretched from the MACC’s entrance to the street. “This is good for Maui,” said Kerwin Iwahori, a self-employed Wailuku resident. “It’s great for both businesses and our people. Overall there were no surprises, but I really didn’t know there were these many local products out there.”

More than 130 vendors showcased locally made products from hot dogs to handmade Christmas cards. The vendors at this sold-out inaugural event had to have their businesses based in Maui County and offer products that met a minimum 51 percent Hawaii value-added valuation. The event’s product mix, quality and creativity also were considered during a selection process that attracted more than 150 applications.

On Friday, before the festival opened to the public, an invitation-only event was held for specially invited retailers and wholesalers. Steve and Vicki Pillar of Moku Pua, which produces natural body care and fragrance items at the Maui Tropical Plantation, negotiated five new wholesale accounts in one day. Vicki Pillar said she’s also excited about the potential of offering her line at a new venue that sees 500 people on a daily basis. “This is huge for us,” Pillar said as she drafted sales and met hundreds of new customers on Saturday. “We’re exploding. We’re getting a lot of exposure and this can only mean better business.”

30

Jennifer Lawrence, an artist and owner of Jennifer’s Gourds, has been in business for some 15 years, now offering whimsical animal sculptures, ornaments and decorative pieces at a Wailea hotel and an art gallery. “This is gives me an opportunity to meet the public,” she said as she greeted customers Andy and Sherry Wright of Mechanicsville, Va. “I would like to reach more, and at an event like this one, you just never know.”

The Wrights’ first-time visit to Maui was supposed to wrap up Saturday with a helicopter ride, but the inclement weather foiled their plans. They had heard about the festival at a gallery and then saw signs on the road that led them to the Maui Arts & Cultural Center. “I love this kind of thing,” Sherry Wright said. “Now we can pick up last-minute gifts for our family and friends,” she said. Andy Wright added: “It’s great to find something that’s locally made. It’s special, really nice.”

About dozen Molokai vendors traveled to Maui to show their wares at the Made in Maui County Festival, including tattoo artist Lyndon Dela Cruz, the owner and operator of Lanakila Designs. With his siblings’ help, Dela Cruz set up a tent to show off customized graphic designs that can be placed on cars, coolers, cups, school folders, glasses and even boats. “Coming from Molokai, to see people come out in the rain, it’s terrific. I like talking to people,” he said. Dela Cruz, who has had other businesses, including a pet shop and a moving and storage service, said the festival boosted his confidence in himself and in Lanakila Design, a fledgling venture just two years old. He said he’s connected with a bunch of Maui customers that he wouldn’t have had without the festival exposure. “This is his passion. He’s been an artist since he was little,” said Sweet McKee, Dela Cruz’s sister who helped field customers on Saturday. “It’s awesome to see him go like this.”

Twenty-six-year-old Leila Comeaux teamed up with her mother, Eileen, to showcase the family business, Hana Herb & Flowers. Leila Comeaux said mom runs the farming side of the company while she produces products including coconut oil, lip balms and a variety of wood work made from koa, pine and monkeypod.

Leila’s products, made in her home in Hana, are sold at a variety of locales around the island. She said she would like to return to college to study business and learn more about making her small venture grow. “I’m really about sustainability at the end of the day,” she said. Leila Comeaux said she was surprised at the number of retailers who were interested not only in carrying her products, but in taking orders for her wood work to use to display items in a storefront or a business. “I’m excited about it because I love to build too. I’m building my own home and people are interested in wood and handmade items.”

Patterned after the successful Made in Hawaii Festival on Oahu, which annually attracts more than 35,000 attendees, Maui County’s own version hopes to capitalize on the successful formula used by their Oahu counterpart. Rasmussen said a post-event survey will be taken and a decision on how to move forward will follow. However, based on the resounding success of this year’s event, a festival for 2015 is almost a sure bet.

The festival was presented by the County of Maui, the Mayor’s Office of Economic Development and the Maui Chamber of Commerce.

35

“The impact was even greater than the enthusiastic individuals who visited our booth. Another incremental breakthrough in becoming known on Maui.” Arnie Kotler, Koa Books

I was also really inspired to pinpoint my branding which was a wonderful opportunity to take my business to the next level.” Robin Newton, Liquid Sunshine Jewelry

“All the positive feedback I received about my products gave me confidence to move ahead in my new venture.” Andrea Schmitt, Lustrous Maui

“We are a very small business and right now we do not have a storefront. Most of our sales are generated though our online store and communication is done through social media – blog, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram. The MIMCF allowed us to showcase our products and reconnect to the community we grew up in. After attending college on the mainland, it was great to be able to share our products and designs with the community we love so much. Communicating face-to-face, talking about our designs, and sharing what we do with the rest of Maui was a huge benefit to us. We were able to reach out to the people who are not online and we made promising business contacts. The MIMCF was a great opportunity to share our work and make new friends.” Jessica Matsumoto, Matsumoto Studio

“This was a great event that showcased many of the creative, diverse and wonderful products our Maui County artists, entrepreneurs and farmers have available. We at the Maui Coffee Association look forward to the second annual Made In Maui County event!” Sydney Smith, Maui Coffee Association

“Very good exposure. I made some awesome contacts with potential galleries and gave away over 200 business cards to customers. This event also showed me some of the things I can improve on. Mostly, the MIMCF served as a launching pad for my business. It allowed me to reach the local market in a wonderful venue.” Therese Tice, Maui Dirty Girl Art

“The biggest benefit was establishing new wholesale accounts. The retail visibility was also great, not only for sales, but for pr and marketability.” Heidi Cramer, Maui Dog Treats

“EXPOSURE!” Guy Gaumont, Maui Film Works

“This event was a great opportunity for us to get in front of our existing customer base, provide information, strengthen existing and create many new relationships. The timing was perfect just before the holiday season!” Darren Strand, Maui Gold Pineapple Co.

“The exposure to wholesale buyers and small business owners was invaluable! We were very appreciative of the comments we received about our booth, product label, and taste of our Gourmet Popcorn.” Joel Liu , Maui Gourmet Popcorn

“Wow, what a great event! It allowed our company to be seen by many and bring our products to the people who really need them here in Hawaii.” Shone Edel, Maui Homeopathy, LLC

“Exposure! We had wonderful feedback and our products were well received. We sold out of a number of items!” Libby Behn, Maui Island Love

“We made numerous contacts with buyers and store owners. This could not have been accomplished on our own without the generous help of the MIMCF. The staff for this event was absolutely phenomenal and that is what makes Maui no ka oi. We can't wait for next year's event!” Jae Springer, Maui J & M Photography

“The MIMCF is the perfect proactive, grassroots initiative supporting, growing and elevating Maui small business while perpetuating the spirit of aloha. As a vendor, we had the opportunity to gain exposure that would have been hard to achieve individually – we more than doubled our wholesale orders.” Kauionalani Waller, Maui Nui Wear

“Loved the opportunity to meet and greet customers. Great job with exposure.” Anthony La Bua-Keiser, Maui Preserved

“Incredible event, high turnout, valuable contacts and great organization! Thank you, thank you, thank you! Please have it every year!” Alena Danskikh , Maui Rainbow Tea

“It was great to sell products on Maui. Most of our art sells off-island. Thanks to MIMCF we were able to make connections within the Maui community with new customers and vendors alike. I think people will begin to look for us each year.” Rob Hawes, Maui Tiki Mugs

37

“The biggest benefit was the one-time exposure to the amount of wholesalers and customers in such a small time period.” Wailani Tanaka, Mea Moloka`i

“Great to have access to so many buyers.” Rob De Camp, Nohea Island Images, Inc.

“I believe that the combination of wholesale buyers and retail buyers was the best benefit to our small business. Your advertising and PR was outstanding and we had the opportunity to make the newspapers (twice) which really helped put our small business on the map of Maui businesses. The team that put the event on could not have been better. You crossed your t's and dotted your i's and thought of just about everything that vendors could need or want, right down to the Boy Scouts helping us get our items to our vehicles, which helped move us out quickly. Big mahalos to everyone!” Caroline Arena, Ono Nuts

“Exposure. Many of our existing accounts got to see all our products and meet a representative of our company in person.” Nancy Gove, Pacifica Hawaii Salt

“Congratulations to the Mayor's Office of Economic Development and the Maui Chamber of Commerce for putting on one of the most successful and organized shows I as a small business owner have ever participated in. Mahalo for your support of small businesses with products made in Maui.” Barbara Chung, Palapala Designs

“This event brought together the best of both worlds. Our awesome support from locals and the generosity from tourists visiting our talented island. It was a great way to communicate and share my Maui Made art to many awesome people from all over.” Jaclynn Sabado, Paradise Now

“Our business is so new and so small. The MIMCF gave us a platform to get our name out in our own community.” Joshua Arquero, Pilialoha Keiki

“This event provided my company with access to buyers that I got to meet and was not able to do so before. Thank you so much. The advertising opened up clientele and our exposure by at least 50%.” Clarence Hookano, Poi by the Pound

“The event provided great exposure to people who have not seen my product yet.” John Cadman, Pono Pies/Maui Breadfruit Co.

“I am just so pleased to have been able to participate in this county-wide event. The venue was fabulous, the hardworking event coordinators did a brilliant job and I want to just say MAHALO Y'ALL to all the folks who had a hand in making it a tremendous first-ever fabulous success. The biggest benefit for my business was exposure to such a wide and diverse audience, wholesale and retail, I just am so thrilled at the feedback on my products.” Patty McCartney, Pualani O Moloka`i Mana`e Grown Farm

“Setting aside a day specifically for buyers, and only buyers, was a nice benefit. We had time to talk with business owners and possible buyers to see if our product would be a good fit without interruption. The marketing team was amazing in getting the word out!” Kether Quinlan, Queen Bee Productions

38

“The event gave excellent exposure for my retail store which should promote future sales of my jewelry and generate more sales tax to the county of Maui. So this is truly a benefit to everyone including the customers who can shop for everything at one location. People loved it!!” Ron Lenius, Ron L. Designs

“The biggest benefit were the sales and marketing. Really enjoyed the event – my busiest event yet. I loved the turnout especially in the rain. Can’t wait till next year.” Fina Kaauwai, Rosebuds

“There is no doubt, the amount of exposure to the public was the biggest benefit. To be able to put your product into the hands of so many people, and then to talk about it and give its history is not possible in any other retail experience on Maui...until now. And what a beautiful venue....that was special to me.” Kathleen O'Bryan, Saints of Hawaii

“The MIMCF was a dream come true.” Sarai Stricklin, Sarai Stricklin

“A great opportunity to get our name and our product out to everyone on Maui!” Debi Mead, Scott Mead Photography, Inc.

“The flagship MIMCF was a great benefit to my business. It gave me the opportunity to connect with buyers from stores and a very large non-stop retail day with consumers on Saturday – many who did not see my work before.” Anna Hadley, Seyana Jewelry

“It was a wonderful way to kick off the holiday season! Our biggest benefit came in the form of mass exposure to locals and visitors alike. No where else could one find a concentration of buyers and sellers on the island all at the same place. The sheer number of attendees was staggering for a first-time event.” Christine Vestfals, Shaka Pops

“This event provided a wide range of exposure from wholesale to retail. It gave people a chance to know my product so when they see it in the stores they will be more willing to purchase.” Andrea Palmer, Snoops K9 Gourmet

“Maui people are supportive of local business, and at an event like MIMCF, with a turn-out of thousands, it shows!” Jessie Ford, Teas & Coffee of Hawaii

“The inaugural MIMCF was the most amazing event for our business because it put us in contact with numerous buyers and distributors that will help spread ‘Backyard Juice’ across the state and beyond!” Michelle Jones, Two Chicks In A Hammock, LLC

“Exposure to the Maui Market was great! Having the event at the MACC and it being central was a plus! I am looking forward to next year's event.” Ku`ulei Mashino, Upcountry Maui Favorites

It’s been extremely gratifying to see the overwhelming response from our

community ranging from event sponsors who make Poweredthe event by adiply financially possible to local businesses and Powered by adiply individuals wanting to encourage entrepreneurship in the islands.” Patterned after the successful Made in Hawaii Festival on Oahu, which annually attracts more than 35,000 attendees, Maui County’s own version hopes to capitalize on the successful formula used by their Oahu counterpart. “This venue offers an excellent opportunity to share my artwork and our island’s host culture.” Then, there are those like Made in Hawaii Festival veteran Michael Kilinski of Maui Jelly Factory, who is looking to expand the market share for his company’s jams, jellies, mustard, sauces, syrups, salad dressings and candy products. I hope this Festival will become an annual tradition in Maui County.” The Festival is presented by the County of Maui, Mayor’s Office of Economic Development and the Maui Chamber of Commerce. Maui has outstanding community events throughout the year – from golf tournaments that are fun to watch or fundraisers that are fun to eat (at). If you are thinking of traveling to Maui in 2014, here are some events that you might want to consider planning a trip around. (ok, it might be too late to make it here for the golf tournament, but I bet it will happen around the same time in 2015 as well…) And if you live here, some of these events are the ones you’ll want to start saving your pennies for…

Kawamoto, who owns and operates Maui's Dee-Lites in Happy Valley, said other than the oil for the taro chips and its packaging, the product originates from the Valley Isle. The taro is grown on Maui.

"We try to help the local farmers. That's what we are doing," she said.

In addition to the chips, which are sold as Maui Specialty Chips, she has a new line of coffee cookies that use Maui coffee beans. These

cookies and others are sold under the Maui's Dee-Lites name.

Kawamoto and other vendors who make Maui County their home will have their products showcased Saturday at the first Made In Maui County Festival, which will be open to the public from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center. Admission is $3; children 12 and under are free. There will be more than 130 vendors, including some from Molokai, offering made in Maui County products, such as food, jewelry, clothing, gifts and collectibles. There also will be demonstrations and local food trucks serving up doughnuts, ribs, plate lunches, poke, Maui produce and Maui Cattle Co. beef.

"This is an ideal event for residents and visitors seeking Hawaii value-added products made by local businesses," said Mayor Alan Arakawa. "Not only will the public discover the wide variety of products created and produced by Maui County's entrepreneurs, but attendees will be helping to keep dollars in our community by helping to grow these amazing businesses."

The festival is co-presented by the Mayor's Office of Economic Development and the Maui Chamber of Commerce.

A private preview event will be held Friday for wholesale/retail buyers to visit with vendors to establish contacts. Organizers expect about 200 people to attend the event.

The festival will feature seasoned businesses as well as new ones such as PILIALOHAkeiki, a baby and toddler clothing company that just started this year. Owner Rondy Arquero, a graphic arts teacher at Maui High, said that after teaching for 11 years, she wanted a creative outlet while still keeping her day job.

"Teaching over and over kind of gets repetitive. I wanted something new and something challenging," she said.

So she and husband, Josh, a registered nurse at Hui No Ke Ola Pono, launched their business that features the Hawaiian words for local values decorated on children's shirts, hats and onesies. There also are greeting cards. Pilialoha is Josh's Hawaiian name, and it means beloved.

Mrs. Arquero drew inspiration from her children, 5-year-old Nanea and especially 2-year-old Ho'omalu.

"The girls, I think, there is a lot of cute stuff out there. (But) when we were trying to look for clothes for my son, there wasn't too much that was meaningful and cute for the boys."

She noted that for girls, there were a lot of clothes that said "little princess" or "I'm so cute"; for the boys, often the shirts said "little monster." She wanted to get away from that.

Her line features messages such as "lealea," or joy and fun; "malama," which means to care for; and "lokahi," or unity. The couple comes up with the ideas behind the designs, and Mrs. Arquero turns them into reality with her graphics skills.

The Arqueros made their launch at the Merrie Monarch Festival in Hilo in the spring and sold out of their "little opihi" logo clothing. They also went to the Made in Hawaii Festival in August on Oahu.

"It's been more challenging than we thought," she said of the business.

The Arqueros, who are normally shy, had to venture out into social media. Prior to the business, they did not have a Facebook account and were against having one for privacy reasons. Now, they have one for the business.

"All of a sudden we have to be out there. That was a challenge getting out there," Mrs. Arquero said. "It's been good for me and Josh; it made us more outgoing, I guess."

While still nurturing a young company, the Arqueros have a seasonal kiosk at the Queen Ka'ahumanu Center. They also have done local events, such as the First Friday parties and craft fairs.

"It's just kind of exciting," she said. "Josh and I have been in the same jobs forever. It's just something new."

She said she wanted to be part of the Made in Maui County Festival

2 of 4 11/6/14, 9:43 PM MAUI MADE - Mauinews.com | News, Sports, Jobs, Visitor's Infor... http://www.mauinews.com/page/content.detail/id/591763/MAUI-...

to gain exposure on her home island.

"Plenty of people don't know us," she said.

Kawamoto already knows how valuable these types of festivals are, having twice attended the Made in Hawaii Festival, where Hawaii-made products are featured. She garnered a lot of interest for her taro chips at the festival, which is the bulk of her business.

Oahu supermarkets and other vendors were interested in buying the chips, but without a large distributor, it has been challenging. Keeping the products Maui-based also was an issue.

"The demand is there, but we had to work with the farmers," Kawamoto said. "We wanted to keep it Maui."

Currently, Kawamoto's taro chips only are sold at the Safeway in Hawaii Kai. They also used to be sold in Maui's Times Supermarkets, Safeway and the Duty Free shops at the airport, but the taro demand was too high to meet the sales demand, she said. Kawamoto said the company does manufacture the chips for the restaurants Leoda's Kitchen and Pie Shop, Aloha Mixed Plate and Old Lahaina Luau.

The chips also are served at Mala Ocean Tavern.

When there is little taro available, Kawamoto said she makes sweet potato, banana and potato chips.

She also bakes cheesecakes and other desserts for special orders. Her cookies also are made seasonally for the holidays and are sold in her shop in Happy Valley. Some products may be found across the street at Takamiya Market.

Her two daughters, Melissa Hasegawa and Yma Hasegawa, also help out in the business; so do other relatives when they have time.

"It's just a passion that I had," Kawamoto said about Maui's Dee-Lites. "The family came in, and they enjoyed it."

Handcrafters of all sorts on Maui, Molokai and Lanai have their own version of the Made in Hawaii Festival to eagerly anticipate this year.

The inaugural Made in Maui County Festival will be Nov. 7 and 8 at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center and is being staged by the Mayor's Office of Economic Development in partnership with the Maui Chamber of Commerce. Organizers plan to make the festival an annual event.

The festival will not be reinventing the wheel; rather, it will take many tips from the successful annual Made in Hawaii Festival on Oahu each August, said Office of Economic Development Director Teena Rasmussen.

The event will be "open to all companies that meet the same criteria as the Made in Hawaii Festival, that is, 51 percent value-added in Hawaii, but their headquarters has to be in Maui County," she said.

The county has "taken 18 of our companies to the Made in Hawaii Festival, and based on their experience — and we're still encouraging our companies to go to that show — the issue is the cost for our people to go," Rasmussen said.

Neighbor island vendors have to ship merchandise to Oahu and rent a hotel and car for three or four nights, which becomes quite expensive, "so by the time they add all that to the trade show cost," they have a high base line before any profit can be achieved, she said. Such costs can be prohibitive for many would-be vendors.

To make the Maui event "affordable, we are going to give our companies on Molokai and Lanai some assistance to come here," said Rasmussen.

Some pieces of the festival still have to be finalized, such as the cost for a booth and the exact number of booths that will be available, "but we are expecting over 100," Rasmussen said. At the MACC a meeting room may be used for some vendors with high-value items, such as jewelry.

Prices for vendors and admission prices for the public and other details will be finalized this month.

The first day of the festival, a Friday, will be for buyers on an invitation-only basis, but the next day the festival will be open to the public at "nominal cost," Rasmussen said. There also will be onstage product demonstrations all day by vendors who sign up for the opportunity.

"In addition, we're going to invite food trucks … to serve people" on the back lawn of the MACC.

"It's the first one. We are really excited about it," Rasmussen said, as is the Maui County Council.

Not surprisingly, Maui Mayor Alan Ara-kawa also supports the event.

"We have a wide variety of products that are made right here on Maui, Molokai and Lanai and this is a great idea, to gather them all in one place," Arakawa said in an emailed statement. "We have some outstanding artists, crafters, wood-workers and of course locally prepared food that we plan to showcase to the world at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center."

The Maui Chamber of Commerce has long been involved in promoting products that are locally made, said Chamber

Page 1 of 2 Mar 19, 2014 10:19:53AM MDT http://www.staradvertiser.com/businesspremium/20140319_Fall_festival_will_highlight_products_from_Maui_County.html?id=250923191 President Pamela Tumpap.

The chamber officially branded the "Made in Maui" mark "long ago" and created the Made in Maui Trade Council, a chamber committee with more than 70 members whose main purpose is to create awareness of the county's locally made products, Tumpap said.

Both residents and visitors "are always looking for things made by local people, local hands, local hearts, to keep dollars in our community and grow these outstanding businesses."

The festival gives the Office of Economic Development and the Chamber an opportunity for "reaching out to our sister islands … and including them and their great and unique products, and we're going to connect them with corporate buyers, wholesalers and distributors to help expand the reach of these products into other markets."

"Buy Maui First" is a popular slogan, and since the festival is "right before the holiday season … we will really have a chance to showcase" the Maui County-made products that are available, said Tumpap.

Professional buyers interested in trying to get on the invitation list can contact the chamber at 244-0081, Tumpap said. There will be a screening process.

Wailuku-based Linn Nishi-kawa & Associates Inc. has been awarded the marketing contract, and mostly "behind-the-scenes" work is underway right now, Nishi-kawa said, such as preparing a festival website and other resources for vendors, and publicity materials.
