Abstract Since its introduction approximately seven years ago, selamectin (Stronghold®/Revolution®, Pfizer Inc.) has been used off-label to treat a number of ecto- and endoparasite conditions in dogs and cats. It has been used as a successful prophylactic against Dirofilaria repens and as a treatment for Aelurostrongylus abstrusus in cats. It has also been used to treat notoedric mange, infestation with the nasal mite Pneumonyssoides caninum, Cheyletiella spp. and Neotrombicula autumnalis infestations and larval Cordylobia anthropophaga infection. Smith, MD Case Report A 12-year-old boy presented to dermatology with boils that had not responded to antibiotic therapy. The boy had been vacationing in Belize with his family and upon return noted 2 boils on his back. His pediatrician prescribed a 1-week course of cephalexin 250 mg 4 times daily. One lesion resolved while the second grew larger and was associated with stinging pain. The patient then went to the emergency depart- ment and was given a 1-week course of dicloxacil- lin 250 mg 4 times daily. Nevertheless, the lesion persisted, prompting the patient to return to the Figure 1. The area was then irri- gated and bandaged without suturing and the larva was sent for histopathologic evaluation (Figure 3). -

Subsequent 28S rRNA gene sequencing showed 99.9% similarity (916/917 bp) with the partial 28S rRNA gene of C. anthropophaga. This is the first imported case of furuncular myiasis caused by C. anthropophaga in a Korean overseas traveler. This condition most often affects the skin and may also occur in certain body cavities. It is mainly seen in the tropics, though it may also be rarely encountered in non-tropical regions. Herein, we present a case of cutaneous furuncular myiasis in an Iranian male who had travelled to Africa and his condition was finally diagnosed with observation of spiracles of larvae in the lesions. The posterior end of larvae is usually visible in the punctum and the patient may notice its movement. Cordylobia anthropophaga’ usually appears on the trunk, buttocks, and thighs.5 Case Presentation A 40-year-old Iranian male, who had made a recent visit to Africa for business, developed several red pruritic papular lesions on his body especially on his thighs. Over several days, the lesions developed into larger, boil-like lesions with overlying central cracks (Fig 1). There was some tingling sensation in the lesions but no constitutional symptoms were present. Three species of Cordylobia are known: C. anthropophaga, C. rodhaini and C. ruandae. The C. rodhaini Gedoelst 1909 lives in Sub-Saharan Africa, especially in rain forest areas. Usual hosts are rodents and antelopes. Humans are accidentally infested. Myiasis caused by C. rodhaini has been very rarely reported in the literature. We present three cases of C. rodhaini myiasis acquired in Ethiopia and Uganda. Materials and Methods: A total of one hundred and thirty three (133) myiasis wound swabs and Cordylobia anthropophaga larvae were collected from infested dogs and analyzed for pathogenic bacteria using microscopic, cultural and biochemical methods. Results: The most commonly encountered bacteria were Staphylococcus aureus 75 (56.4%), Streptococcus spp. 16 (12%) and Escherichia coli 7 (5.3%). Other organisms isolated include, Staphylococcus epidermidis and Corynebacteria species, while mixed infection of S. aureus and Streptococcus spp were also observed. The rate of infection was found to be highest among the age groups 1–20 weeks and least in the 91 – 100 (week) age groups. The breed of dogs mostly infected with these bacteria was the local breed (Mongrel) while the German shepherd /Alsatian breeds were the least infected and with 58.6% (78) and 4.5% (6) percentage respectively. -

Myiasis is the infestation of live tissue of humans and other vertebrates by larvae of flies. Worldwide, myiasis of humans is seldom reported, although the trend is gradually changing in some countries. Reports of human myiasis in Africa are few. Several cases of myiasis were recently seen at the Mthatha Hospital Complex, Mthatha, Eastern Cape Province, South Africa (SA). Objective. Because of a paucity of literature on myiasis from this region, surgeons and scientists from Walter Sisulu University, Mthatha, decided to document myiasis cases presenting either at Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital or Umtata General Hospital from May 2009 to April 2013. The objective was to determine the incidence, epidemiology, patient age group and gender, and fly species involved. The effect of season on incidence was also investigated. Results. Twenty-five cases (14 men and 11 women) were recorded in the 4-year study period. The fly species involved were Lucilia sericata, L. cuprina, Chrysomya megacephala, C. chloropyga and Sarcophaga (Liosarcophaga) nodosa, the latter being confirmed as an agent for human myiasis for the first time. -

ZUMPT South African Institute for Medical Research SUMMARY The following myiasis-producing flies in man and domestic animals have wild animals as reservoirs: Cordylobia anthropophaga (Blanchard)-Calliphoridae. Cordylobia rodhaini Gedoelst-Calliphoridae. Gasterophilus spp.-Gasterophilidae. Gedoelstia haessleri Gedoelst-Oestridae. Gedoelstia cristata Rodhain and Bequaert-Oestridae. Little is known about wild reservoirs of Chrysomya bezziana Villeneuve (Calliphoridae), which nowadays infests mainly cattle, which are to be regarded as the only important reservoirs. Wild hosts, however, must have played a decisive role in the past. Wild reservoirs of the Tumbu fly Cordylobia anthropophaga are mainly rodents; those of Lund's fly Cordylobia rodhaini are small antelopes and the giant rat.
