Highfields Dairy was illustrated and described in The Building News for 7th February 1879. The house has subsequently been described and illustrated in Barrie Trinder's Beyond the Bridges: The Suburbs of Shrewsbury 1760-1960 (Phillimore, 2001). At the time of building, the house was described as: This dairy cottage is now being built for Thomas Middleton Howells, Esq., from the design of Messrs. Treasure and Son, of Shrewsbury. It is of brick walling generally, with oak framing externally, except chimney bases and lower portion of porch and bay window, which are of rubble random stone ; panels between framing are cemented, and chimney stacks are of brown bricks, the roof being covered with brown or dark strawberry-coloured Broseley tiles, with red ridge cresting. All wood framing painted black, and panels white. All of this remains and, internally, the house retains its Maw encaustic tiled hall floor, original joinery and chimney pieces. It was commissioned as both an eye-catcher and as a functional dairy by Thomas Middleton Howell, who owned Highfields House and its estate. Highfields House still stands and is the Headmaster's house for Prestfelde. The house was built on the site of an earlier structure, possibly a windmill, which is shown on early maps of the area. The old field name of an adjoining filed as Windmill Field and the former name of Preston Street as Windmill Lane give credence to this, as does the house's high site, enjoying views of the spires of Shrewsbury, the distant Breidden Hill and also Haughmond Hill. The adjacent dairy building and parts of what is now the garage were added in 1890 and were built by Edward George of Abbey Foregate. The plan and elevation for this structure is in Shropshire Archives (ref. DA5/710/14). The gardens include a number of interesting trees and shrubs including the contemporary Wellingtonia tree and also a particularly fine birch (both protected by TPOs but the only trees on the property to have this protection).
