Westbury W I

We held our last meeting at 2.30pm on Wednesday, 19 May 2021 in Penelope’s shed where a table was set out with mugs and cakes and the chairs were set two metres apart.

The Speaker was Frances Peake who told us about starting her business as a Travel Agency thirty years ago. She showed us many photographs of places which she has visited. Frances was thanked by Beryl who said that - on her dining room table - she had booked her first holiday with Frances.

We had a lovely tea and enjoyed looking around Penelope’s plants. Cilla gave everyone a tub of sweet peas. A rose was presented to our President for all her good work during the “Lockdown”. We all signed a “Get Well” card for Christine.

Arrangements were made to visit Marche Manor at 6.30pm on Wednesday, 9 June 2021 to look around their lovely garden.

Jill and Beryl will be delivering the ‘red bags’ for Stephen Worrall to take to Rumania. Stephen is a member of Sabre, the charity which takes fire engines and other items to the people who live there.

The next meeting on Wednesday, 14 July 2021 will again be at Penelope’s house with tea at 4.00pm and a talk at 5.30pm when Speaker Clare Williams will give a talk entitled “How I made my Garden during Lockdown”. Beryl Johnson : Secretary : 01743 884950 Email: [email protected]

Page 7 Psalm 1

Happy are those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or take the path that sinners tread, or sit in the seat of scoffers; but their delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law they meditate day and night.

They are like trees planted by streams of water, which yield their fruit in its season and their leaves do not wither.

In all that they do, they prosper.

The wicked are not so, but are like chaff that the wind drives away. Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous; for the Lord watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.

The book of Psalms is a collection of 150 Hebrew poems, songs and prayers. They were written by various authors around three millennia ago. They are not written as historical notes, doctrinal nor theological assignments but more like a personal diary entry, in which we reveal our inner most secrets and thoughts.

Being, in effect, poetry in genre, they express deep feelings of hurt, anger, joy and wonder. They often present a vibrant and evocative picture, encouraging the reader to stop, take time out and to reflect, maybe on the wonder and beauty of creation or God’s steadfastness.

In Psalm 1, the author compares the wicked of this world to chaff, lacking in substance and blown around by the breeze. Whereas he sees the righteous as like powerful trees - able to withstand any bad weather that is thrown against them - this may not be your experience, maybe you see the wicked prospering ?

But the author of the Psalm encourages us to rise above our difficulties, to find depth and refreshment in the knowledge that we are walking in the light of God, bearing fruits of love and peace, against which no wickedness can prevail.

I can commend the book of Psalms to you as a source of wisdom, inspiration and comfort; why not take up the challenge, to read one Psalm each day – for 150 days ? Christ our wisdom, give us delight in your law, and may we bear much fruit to share with those around us; the fruit of love, joy and peace. For your name’s sake. Amen. Revd. Page 8 SHROPSHIRE MOBILE LIBRARY SERVICE - UPDATE

Further to the May 2021 Newsletter, I have since been advised by Ellen Powell, Team Librarian at the Library Headquarters, that it has been decided that the Mobile Libraries will continue with the Ready Reads (Click and Collect) Service until the end of June 2021. Borrowers can pick up a bag of staff-selected books at their normal stop. They will be doing two weeks on the road, two weeks off. They will make a decision in June as to what will happen after that, but they are hoping to be back to a more normal service. On the road dates are as follows : Route Days Dates 2 Tuesdays 15 June 2021 4 Thursdays 17 June 2021 8 Mondays 7 June 2021

Please note that these dates may change if Government guidance changes. No stops have changed the Route Number or Day over the last year, so any information sent in the past will be correct. Some stops have changed their timings slightly (to extend or reduce the Stop Time depending upon how busy it is), so it has been advised that you check the timings on the Mobile Library Stops Map on the mobile library website : http://www.shropshire.gov.uk/libraries/mobile-libraries/ : Ellen Powell has advised me that once the changes have been decided later in June, she will be sending me an email with a list of the new Dates and Times for me to insert in the July Newsletter, and onwards. Page 9 Westbury School

Many of you will be wondering what has happened to the former St Mary’s School ……….

We are delighted to announce the opening of Westbury School. The school is owned by Unique Care Group, a residential, educational child care company specialising in providing placements for young people with learning difficulties, including autistic spectrum condi- tions and co-occurring needs such as ADHD, dyslexia, anxiety disorder, emotional challenges and attachment conditions. Given the challenges we have all faced this year, it has been a very long journey for the school. From the renovation work to curriculum development and staff recruitment, little has been straightforward for us ! However, we have recently undergone a successful Ofsted inspection and the school is now officially registered. Of course, it is now when the real work starts ….. we are a safe, happy, nurturing and positive learning environment where pupil voice is central in everything we do. The staff have high aspirations for our learners. We aim to provide a high quality, relevant and balanced education for all our pupils that focuses on individual, personal, social, vocation- al and academic achievement. For our learners, the curriculum must be highly personal- ised for each learner and - to this end - we have been overwhelmed by the support and generosity of the local community. We value collaborative partnerships with parents, carers and with a range of other agencies and it is this joined-up working which ensures learners are best placed and are supported to make outstanding progress. Moving forward, there are many ideas of how we would like to develop employability skills for our learners, while positively contributing to our local community. Whilst nothing is firmed up as yet, we are interested in running a Community Café once a half term, looking after an area of the grounds in the Church, co-ordinating a “Westbury in Bloom” competition and - as a horticulture project - planting wild flowers under the Westbury road sign on the Shrewsbury Road. A huge thank you to everyone who has helped us and for all of the kind messages of support. With best wishes, Farah Quinn Head Teacher Westbury School, School Lane, Westbury. Shrewsbury, Shropshire. Page 10 JUNE 2021 : UPDATE FROM ED POTTER YOUR SHROPSHIRE COUNCIL UNITARY COUNCILLOR The Shirehall, Abbey Foregate, Shrewsbury, Shropshire. SY2 6ND

Dear All

They say a week is a long time in politics, yet the few weeks which have passed - since the local elections - seem to have flown by. A new administration is in place and hopefully some of the key priorities for our area will be addressed over the next four years. I have made it clear there needs to be a vast improvement to the roads, addressing the potholes and drainage issues. Likewise it has become apparent that there is a need to improve the efficiency of Planning and in particular the communication with communities. The new leader of the Council Lezley Picton is aware that these need to be top priorities. Following the Election pledge for a new bin for recycling, we expect the roll-out to begin this summer. It is likely to start in the area and then work its way around the county. I will keep you informed as and when our areas are able to apply.

Locally there continue to be issues around surface water flooding and flooding from the brook in Westbury. Residents have been campaigning to see some work done to the brook to prevent the flooding of their properties and also the roads, particularly Station Road. Now the restrictions are easing, I will try and pull together the riparian owners to see if - as a community - we can improve the situation.

Finally on a personal note, on 6 May I was very pleased to be re-elected as your local Councillor and I am very grateful for all the support which residents have shown me and for putting their faith in me once again. This time it was good to see an active opposition out canvassing and we even met once when we were “pounding the streets” in Halfway House. I would just like to thank Mr Davies for the pleasant and friendly campaign; too often in politics there is unpleasantness, but I am pleased to say that on this occasion things were quite the opposite. Ed Potter Shropshire Councillor for the Loton Division (Including the Parishes of Alberbury with , Montford, Great and Little Ness and Westbury) Cabinet Member for Children’s Services and Education 07779117802 / 01694731305

The Vron Gate Committee remains confident that the Show will go ahead this year and - like everyone else - we are watching the News and hoping that 21 June will see the final and complete unlock of events. We are confident that we have the room to allow people to enjoy the Show with as much “social distancing” as they feel comfortable and obviously for this event we are in the open air for most of what we do - with the option to remove the sides of our Tea and Beer Tent if the weather is kind.

We are hoping for a good turn-out of Vintage Vehicles and have had a lot of enquiries about Side Stands. Our ever popular Dog Show is taking place, as will be our kids races. We have Simon Airey bringing his Exotic Animals and we have other attractions for kids of all ages.

We will be having a Live Band playing directly after the Main Show and Prize Giving, which will run through until early evening. This is something we were hoping to have last year and we’re keen to try this year, because everyone has missed the opportunity to get out and meet friends. The “After Show” event will also be free and we will be extending the BBQ and Beer Tent into the evening to keep everyone “Fed and Watered”. So please consider stopping for a while after the main Show or plan to come later in the day and enjoy the early Evening Entertainment. The Vron Gate Show Committee

BRITISH RED CROSS - SHROPSHIRE Appeal for Help Hi there

I'm Donna Smith and I am newly in post as the First Call Service Co-ordinator for the British Red Cross, Home from Hospital Service in Shropshire. Were you aware that the Red Cross has a Home from Hospital Service ? Since the pandemic, we've found that our referrals have been low, and we also have low volunteer numbers.

The main focus of my role is on Volunteer Recruitment and Service Development and I would hope to improve the take up of the service. It is for this reason that I have asked if we could put an advert in the Westbury and Yockleton Newsletter to advertise the service and recruit new volunteers ? This would hopefully benefit the local community.

We offer short term (up to six weeks) support for people who have recently been discharged from hospital. The support provided could include the following :

• Keeping someone company or providing befriending support over the telephone or at a home visit.

• Helping the person to regain independence by supporting them with practical tasks such as shopping and collecting prescriptions.

We can also offer free installation and a trial with a Pendant Alarm if the service user is at risk of falling.

We would normally also offer transport support but - due to the pandemic - this service is on hold for the time being.

Please let me know if you are able to help ? I hope to hear from you soon. Kind regards Donna Smith
